What file format are attachments stored in?

I am having a problem seeing pictures that users have uploaded as attachments. They are broken links. I am trying to figure out if the pages no longer have a correct link or the images themselves have been damaged in the file transfer to this server by the hosting company (don't know if they used Filezilla).

If I look in the avatar directory there are actors/celebrity files in JPG format. Can someone tell me where user uploaded avatars are stored? Are they in a JPG or image format?

In my FTP program the attachment directory has a lot of files that are named with long strings of numbers. I don't know what type usually are so I don't know if they should be image files or these non-viewable numbered files are normal.

In the Admin>Forum>Browse Files section all of the file names and info are there, just broken links.
