Hello,

I have been with SMF since 2009 and have been using . . .
Admin >> Maintenance >> Forum Maintenance >> (click on) "Database" (at the top) >> "Backup Database" (make sure all 3 boxes are checked) >> click on "Download"
. . . believing that I was backing up my database and that I could use that "Download" to Restore my forum in the event of a crash.

I recommended this to a new user and was corrected with the following:

"NO, NO, NO!!!!  The admin backup feature is unreliable and should not be used.  Database backups should be done using cpanel backup (if available), phpmyadmin, or third party backup software, such as MySQLDumper."

Does this mean that my method of "back-up" is useless?
If this is true, then what is this option / function used for?

Thank you in advance,
Siirist
Needed information:
- What's your SMF version?, What MODs are installed? What Theme(s) are you using? Have you backed up your database?

--> At least 50% of the questions asked are answered in the Online Manual <--
Mods for ver 1.x will NOT run on ver 2.x

I think you posted your query in the wrong section.

I know, right?

I didn't consider it a "Support" question, which is why I put it where I did.

I wouldn't say the option to backup the database in your admin panel is useless, but it is definitely unreliable and may not actually back up everything. That is why it is recommended to back up the way you posted above (cpanel backup, plesk,  phpmyadmin, etc...)

The option to backup the db from your admin panel has been removed in 2.1 though. ;)
