Simple Machines Forum has a massive problem with sending mail.

I have tried
comcast.net
gmail.com
godaddy relay server
sparkpost server and nothing works

What the hell does one have to do to make this work

I have tried the tls:// ssl://
all different ports

talked hours on end with godaddy and nothing

on occasion I have gotten Comcast server to work, but that is only 10% of the time

how do we handle the
Authentication:AUTH LOGIN
Encryption:STARTTLS

functions...

I am so frustrated with this and there seems to be no answers any where
can anyone point me in the right direction

appreciate it

Kindred

why don't you just use the internal phpmail system?

I have that won't function either
plus... where are any tutorials on exactly how to set this up

I have used SMF in the past, but that was in a time when they didn't have all this new crap
i have tried ssl:// , tls:// settings none, ports 25, 3535, 587,465

you used just
name the smtp server
set the port
user name
password
and you were off and running...

perhaps SMF is just to antiquated to handle modern browsers and mail servers.

how exactly do I configure my php.ini
I believe it is set properly?

Kindred

seems to work properly for hundreds of people, including this site...

However, I am unsure of the exact settings for smtp, since all of my sites use phpmail correctly...

Run attached phpinfo.php in forum root.  Look for disable_functions.  Does it include 'mail'?

already had the phpinfo.php but thanks...

my disable_functions displays   no values   for either  local or Master setting

and yes, I am aware that it works.  I have used SMF over 15 years now (with the mail settings)
but with all the changes to internet and protocols, they just don't function the same

It occasionally worked SMTP.comcast.net (25% of the time)

Same here, No value on either side.

I finally got mine functioning.. Works great now...
I ended up reinstalling SMF at Godaddy (where my host is)
but then
I went to Sparkpost and set up and account there (free lets you send up to 100,000 emails a month WOW)
they had step-by-step instruction (written and video)
lucky for me they even showed exactly how to set up my emails in godaddy
it isn't simple, but it isn't hard either if you do what they say

after all was said and done... it works perfect

luck to you.   :o

@Kindred & Sir Osis of Liver - thank you for your thoughts also

I got it working as well. Used SMTP server IP instead of name, and the queue got sent.

Further Question on the same subject. Is there a log of the mails sent somewhere ? Couldn't find it in the Maintenance logs.

SMF does not keep such logs. it is possible your host may have some of those logs.

KarterJK, can you confirm that you got Sparkpost working on GoDaddy?  I am not having any luck sending with Sparkpost, Mailgun, etc. from my GoDaddy hosted SMF installation (or from GoDaddy-hosted WordPress, for that matter).

This post regarding a WP SMTP mailer plugin [nofollow] (as well as numerous other pages I've found) says that GoDaddy flat-out blocks external SMTP and requires that you use their own SMTP relay server.

GoDaddy

Popular US hosting provider GoDaddy imposes very strict (to the point of becoming almost useless) constraints on sending email. They block outbound SMTP to ports 25, 465 and 587 to all servers except their own. This problem is the subject of many frustrating questions on Stack Overflow. If you find your script works on your local machine, but not when you upload it to GoDaddy, this will be what's happening to you. The solution is extremely poorly documented by GoDaddy: you must send through their servers, and also disable all security features, username and password (great, huh?!), giving you this config for PHPMailer:...

I had the same problem. Probably it's a server problem. ;)

Please start a new topic instead of replying to an older one, especially if it's been marked solved. Thanks.
