Is it the Same?

I'm trying to upgrade from a prior version to the newest one and I obviously need some help doing it.
My problem resides in that my board has stopped making backups from the administration area and I'm afraid to just run any upgrade other than from a new installation. My Forum version: SMF 2.0.8

Is it the same to......?

1. install the new package on the server and use the old SQL database from the old installation. You know, by assigning that old database to he new installation or

2. directly downloading the old database using the export function of the server SQL administration and then importing this into a new SQL database created for the new installation.

Thank you for your help.

we dont recommend using the backup from the admin panel, it is known to do partial backups that are useless.

Tanks a lot for your response
The backup option is not an option for me, since my board stop making backups. It does make them but they are so small that I do not think they are any good.

The other option......  How_to_upload_a_fresh_set_of_files
May be just too complicated for me. "Man got to know his limitations"

Will it be possible to just install the new version and assign the database use by the old forum during the setup. Or that will never work.?  If this those not work. Is there a place in the board where you can hire someone with experience to do it. I work on this private agriculture board for 3 years and I do not want to loose it before it opens.

Thanks again.

you are better off uploading the fresh files. this makes sure that you dont loose your database or other related issues.

otherwise there is http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=50.0
