Notify Me Feature is Not Working

SMF 2.0.13

When I select the "Notify Me" option for a board or a topic, I am never notified by forum message or email. Email works fine for Report to Moderator and when I click on the email icon for a forum member.

In Maintenance > Mail > Settings I have the SMTP mail type selected with appropriate values.

In my profile:

-- the "When sending notification of a reply to a topic, send the post in the email" is selected.
-- For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me: Instantly.

In the dropdown for the line just below that (For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of:), what do you have selected? And I can assume you clicked 'Save Settings'?

I've selected and saved "Replies and moderation"  in the "For topics and boards I've requested notification on, notify me of:" field.

Additional information.

The log shows this error: "Couldn't get mail server response codes"

I searched for that string in the community and found these posts, which suggest an update to an SMF PHP file:

I am not using Gmail as my mail server in this context. I'm using a domain email from my web host, but perhaps it has the same issue as gmail.

I might try the suggested PHP update as there seems to be no other solution.
