Hi all,

We run a small ( 100k posts, 9k topics, 2k members ) members-only forum ( 2.0.13 ) for owners of TREK motorhomes and recently ( about two months ago ) upgraded from Snitz to SMF. There have been a few small issues, but mostly they're users that are confused by change.

However, I've got one puzzling item. We've got a one topic ( that I know of ) that's giving us an issue. The topic was converted from Snitz and has a few posts since then, but AFAIK had been working fine up until now, when apparently a user tried to add another post with some attachments.

The Topic has 58 posts, according to the topic info in the list on the board. The first three pages of the topic work fine, but the fourth gives us a 500 error. We're unable to view any posts past #44.

So this URL works: http://www.trektraxs.com/index.php?topic=10910.30 [nofollow]

and this URL works ( though it wouldn't ever be created by SMF, since AFAIK they only happen in groups of 15 ) http://www.trektraxs.com/index.php?topic=10910.44 [nofollow]

But this link, which should go to the fourth page, starting on post #45 ( there are supposedly 58 of them...) does not work. http://www.trektraxs.com/index.php?topic=10910.45 [nofollow]

I changed my view on the forum to display 50 topics and this topic changed to displaying only page 1, with posts numbered to #49, but clicking on the link to page two ( http://www.trektraxs.com/index.php?topic=10910.50 [nofollow] ) gives me the 500 error again.

I've run all the maintenance tasks to fix any errors. it found some things not in the cache, but mostly nothing. I've also looked in the error logs in SMF and there are no entries at all. The error.log file in the root folder of the site also had no entries from today.

Any suggestions how to fix this?

So it's a post late in that topic. I wonder if it has a link to a really huge image, or a really huge attachment and SMF is trying to go grab the huge image or attachment to try to check its size and see if it needs to resize or not.

The user did mention that they had issues posting an attachment, but we've got our limits at:

500kb/attachment. 2.5MB total, 10 attachments allowed per post.

I found and deleted the post, that was what was breaking the page. I copied the content for the user, we'll see if he can put it back and it's something in the code. It had no attachments.

Arantor

That's actually enough to overload certain server configurations.

But if it's not an attachment, that would imply something weird in the code itself - do you have many bbcode or similar mods installed, and lots of things in that post that would trigger them?

Arantor, you were right. It was a really huge image, it just wasn't showing up when I looked at the post so I mistakenly thought there was nothing there . I deleted the post ( after copying the text ) and everything is working fine again.

The user sent me the images he wanted there and sure enough, one of them was like 4900x3900 pixels, despite only being 385kb. He must have compresed the heck out of it. When I tried to re-post that, it broke my test topic.

I'll add that plugin, thanks.

Thanks to both Arantor for the suggestion and Illori for the plugin link. You folks rock!

This issue is resolved.
