News Management Customization

I've been looking at some news management customization scripts and it seems I can accomplish the same thing using SMF's SSI.php. However, one major thing lacking for me is being able to upload a news avatar that accompanies the story.

How would I go about entering a new field in the post topic form to upload a picutre and have it stored in the attachments folder.

Or should I just rearrange the file attachment form in the news management categories to say 'news avatar...'.

Blah.

Any suggestions?
