Converting themes from 1.0.5 to 1.1RC1

Even if the theme is based on the SMF Default?

Well, there are really a lot of changes done in all of the default templates (e.g. a lot of session validation). I would suggest copying your current style.css and image directory to a new RC1 default template, and then modify the things you want again.
