help with package installion

when i try to install any package it gives me this message

"You cannot download or install new packages because the Packages directory is not writable!"

now can u please tell me why it tells me this

and what is the  process to install a new package

In this case, the error message seems very obvious.  You simply need to change the permission of the Package/ directory.  The instructions indicate you will need to set the permission to 777 or a+rwx.  The way you do this is very client dependent.  My hosting service provides a file manager that lets you set permission in the web interfaces.  However any FTP client should be able to this.  If you post your FTP client, I may be able to help.  If you don't have FTP access and are just a admin through SMF, you will need the site admin to fix this for you.

I believe once you get through the file permission issue, the package installation will be obvious.  SMF really shines with feature.

Yes it is true and no you dont need to set your permissions to 777, you only need to set them to 774, which is rwxrwxrw-

SMF 1.1rc also provides a feature to change these permission settings for you.

Packages>Options>Clean Up Permissions
