SMF install help? - "reference" and "undefined index" errors

I installed SMF using Fantastico (I have no access to installing stuff myself on my hosting server). I first installed it into a directory while I was working on a test site. It worked just fine.
But now the site is going live, so I moved all the site files into the root of my public html directory. Everything went fine, except I couldn't connect to my SMF. I used Fantastico to remove SMF and try a fresh installation. No good. I tried a few more times, removing and reinstalling. Still no good.
