Mainpage modifications

This is the version of SMF I'm using.

Version Information:
Forum version: SMF 1.0 Beta 5 Public (more detailed)
Current SMF version: SMF 1.0.5
PHP version: 4.3.11
MySQL version: 4.0.24-max-log
Server version: Apache
GD version: bundled (2.0.28 compatible)

And I'm using default theme.

Got two questions:

1. How do I change "Simple machines" that is displayed at top left to something else?

2. How do I change the mainpage background color?

I understand that these questions have been asked many a times before on this forum but nothing seems to be working for me. Probably version is making the difference. Honestly speaking, I have no idea. Can someone help?
