I said I'd hope it was out for Christmas. I however count the Christmas period as Christmas, as oppossed to Christmas day itself - so there is still lots of time. :)

Besides, I didn't say normal people - I might have meant only special people :D

:o Am I not special?  :P

I thought RC2 was meant to be out for normal people :P by Christmas? Meaning it should be out tomorrow?

What's the rush?

The rush is that it makes no sense to spend several hours customizing RC1 to have to do it all over again a few weeks later when RC2 is released to the public.  I did nothing with SMF for the past two weeks waiting for RC2 because I thought it'd be out by Christmas.  This was after I spent many hours customizing 1.0.5 before deciding to upgrade to an RC due to the lack of post counting in child forums with 1.0.5.

Now, do I continue to wait for an indefinite period of time (which could be days or months), or do I say f*&^ it and take my chances on RC1, bugs and all?  I want to get it customized to my liking and leave it as is for at least 6 months.  It's do or die.  Either I'm going to put this forum up or I'm not.  Real life has a nasty habit of taking precedence over hobbies such as this.  Starting in January I'm going to be working 60-70 hours a week for a few months.  I won't have time for anything else.

Make no mistake, if you don't have intimate knowledge of SMF (which probably only developers do) it is a time consuming process to customize it to your liking.  Fix it once and forget it is my preference.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays, folks.

I'm sorry, but RC2 had some major changes which extended the development time on it longer than I would have liked. Before we can make RC2 public we need to fix some MySQL 5.1 incompatibility problems, which at a guess will take around a week seeing as it's Christmas. This is why I don't like giving date indications - as life gets in the way :/

The longer we wait, the better they are making it. I would be happy to wait a month if it means the forum becomes much better. I dont mind the wait because i have a functional forum now and know that the RC2 will be that more awesome because of the wait. Grudge says there were some major changes, and that hopefully means SMF kicks way more ass then it did in RC1

Gargoyle

The only thing I can say is that RC2 is very cool...

It will be well worth the wait..

Certainly, that's understandable.  I don't know how anyone can get too upset considering SMF is free.  Still, I think it is better to have an estimated timeframe than no timeframe at all.  It looks like before you folks release an RC that you make as certain as possible that it is as perfect as you can make it.  You folks don't do RC2, RC2.0.1, RC2.1, etc.  My host uses MySQL 4.0.X, so MySQL 5.1 compatibility is the furthest thing from my mind.  I'd have to imagine that the "upgrade" process to make RC2 compatible with MySQL 5.1 would just be swapping a Sources file or two.  Not a big deal, I imagine, since SMF does a pretty good job of keeping the mechanics separate from the presentation.

I haven't seen any "changelogs" or anything else around here, either.  See, the thing is that if I tweak RC1 to my liking, then RC2 comes out, I don't know what the changes between the two are.  It looks like index.template.php did not change at all between 1.0.5 and RC1.  Maybe my changes to RC1 can just be "dropped in" to RC2 since most of my changes (but not all) are in the template files?  I don't know.  That's what makes it so hard.  Too much mystery.

I, for one, would love to get my hands on RC2 even without MySQL 5.1 compatibility.

A changelog is released with every release. Also there have been discussions about we not having certain release dates or timeframes. And If I recall correctly the reasons were clearly stated.

For RC2 there is a new theme its not the same as RC1.  If it's default theme changes just make a copy of it and edit the theme to your liking.  Even better become a charter member ;)

As it's an RC we've tried not to break anything (Even with the NDT) - so changes you make shouldn't really need updating for RC2 unless they are to the sources file. That said you may prefer the new default theme and want to use that as your base instead - in which case you would need to wait.

I totally understand that any public release undergoes heavy internal testing as this helps to elminate (or at least to reduce) problems that might occur to those using it.

Talking 'bout myself, I'm in the process of adding a forum to my website that is running under Joomla! and therefore I'd like to run tests on my development systems with the latest version RC2 and not RC1 because - as stated on various places on this forum - there are some important changes on RC2 - including a new Joomla-Bridge by Orstio that looks to make integration of Joomla! and SMF much easier.

As I've got some spare time over the next few days, I keep on hoping that the public release is just around the corner  :)

Happy holidays !!
Mike

I have to ask:
Will all the RC1 themes be compatible with RC2 :-X >:(

I most likely will get a Charter Memership once I decide to use SMF on my website, but not at the moment as I want to compare it to other solutions for my website.
