Quotewhat is mambo and joomla?

CMS -> Content management system , contains modules, witch you enable to add functions like
guestbooks, image galleries, news system , and more.

Quoteare they the same/different ??

They are different, but Joomla was actually created from mambo...

Quotecan they be integrated into smf
Usually you integrate a forum into a cms , not a cms into a forum  :P

Don't know manny about mkportal , but I think you will have to work a little bit to get this done.
And , probably a little new start :)

You should be able to uninstall MKPortal with out any problems, the last time I used it you only had to modify one file and that was for a wrapped forum. So you can save your forum data but the stuff you have in MKPortal probably will be lost.

At the moment they are close to being the same, Joomla code was made off of Mambo 4.5.x.

In short Mambo Foundation sold out  - most of the dev team resigned and stated Joomla.
So Joomla is now being developed by the original Mambo developers.
Joomla is a good way to go.

Quoteis joomla 1.1 in beta?
No - its still alpha.

Quoteis 1.0.5 the latest stable release ?
Yes

Once you learn Joomla/Mambo you'll love the stuff you can do with it, they can be intimidating at first but it gets easier and there is a ton of help out there.
