PHP default mail ???

Hi,

I am a bigginer in php and also in forum publishing. my free hosting service do not support smtp support and not also ssl support. so i can't send mail from my forum. can i still use my gmail's smtp server but it needs ssl support and i dont have 1 both in my hosting and in my forum ? so if i have to use php default mail, I do not know what it is and how do i configure it?  can any body help me with this matter ??
