Oldiesmann

Sorry for all the delays in this. I've been really busy lately and kept forgetting about it :)

Name: Michael "Oldiesmann" Eshom
Age: 23
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio, USA
Favorite Quote: "The internet is something that connects you with everyone in the world who wants to sell you something" - Red Green
Position: Lead Support Specialist

A little about me: I've been posting on various messageboards for nearly 4 years now, and really got interested in development after joining a board that was powered by YaBB SE. It was the first time I'd ever seen that system, and it seemed a lot cooler than anything else I'd seen. I got a board at Boardnation (after trying several other systems) and had a lot of fun with it, actively following YaBB SE development. After deciding that I wanted to have the thrill of modding my board, I left Boardnation, purchased oldiesmann.us and signed up for webhosting. At the time I had a fan site for my favorite band on Tripod.com, and it was gaining in popularity. My board was the only thing on the domain for months, but I modded it out. Of course, with each mod, it got harder to use Boardmod because the code that it was looking for kept changing. I eventually started manually installing mods, and at one point I think I had close to 20 mods installed...

I finally got around to putting up a website (PHP-based of course), and left it up for about three months. Then I found LSP Enigma and put that up instead. I modified it a bit, and really enjoyed the system. I continued following development of YaBB SE, and even updated a couple of older mods. I also got involved with another project called Supermod, which was originally just that - a mod that combined 20 or 30 other mods into one. This eventually developed into its own system, and I went to help out with them for a while, while still following YaBB SE development, looking forward to the future plans of this system. As the plans got more elaborate, I drooled over features that were planned for YaBB SE 1.6 and then the YaBB SE 2.0 which would come after it, and also wondered what [Unknown] was up to with his "secret project". Shortly thereafter, it was decided to start a new project instead of focusing on fixing up YaBB SE, and [Unknown]'s "secret project" eventually developed into SMF. I followed everyone over here from YaBB SE and started thinking of ways I could get involved. Initially I was going to work on starting an integration team that would focus on getting SMF integrated with various portals and CMS's. In April 2003 though, an open call went out for people interested in being on the support team, so I decided to do that instead. I loved helping people, and Joseph thought I'd be perfect for the role since I had been all over the place helping with other projects and knew a lot about YaBB SE. That eventually lead to me becoming a Lead Support Specialist several months ago.

1. Do you have pets?
Yes. 1 cat and 1 dog.

Lots of stuff - Christian rock/metal/alternative, some Christian hip hop, classic rock, oldies, classic country...

Working on my websites, learning more about PHP, listening to music, learning new technology (currently Ruby on Rails), lots of other things
5. What are your goals/dreams in life?
To eventually get out of college and get a job developing websites, possibly doing something in the Christian music industry. I also have a personal goal to get the Christian music industry to stop being so relient on phpBB...
6. What got you involved in SMF?
      See above story...
7. Who do you admire? Why?
[Unknown]. The fact that I'm 5 years older than him and don't even know half of what he does is pretty amazing. I've never seen anyone with as much knowledge about the internet and computers in general as him.
8. Are you into sports?  If so which ones?
I watch a lot of sports. My favorites are baseball, football (both pro and college) and college basketball, although I also like hockey and enjoy watching NASCAR.
9. What is your dream job?
Developing websites and getting paid to run messageboards for people.
10. What was your first screenname?
My first AIM screen name (believe it or not) was actually Oldiesmann, but I didn't actually have AIM at the time and never have been able to figure out the password or email address I used when I created that account... CincyOldiesFan stems from my first email address ([email protected]).

15. What is your favorite website?
      Google.com, wikipedia.org and howstuffworks.com

Nope, at least nothing that would be considered a real "game". I have played Pandora's Box though (an old puzzle game from Microsoft).
17. Do you play video game consoles?  Which ones?
No. I do have a Game Boy Color though and play my sister's Game Boy Advanced sometimes. Sadly though, one local marketing research firm keeps calling me every now and then to see if I'll qualify for a study on video games (and I never do)

22. Did you play hookey from class?
I didn't in high school (wouldn't have gotten away with it if I had wanted to), although I have skipped classes in college for various reasons...
22. Do you have a license?
      Yep.
  a. Do you own a car? No, but I wish I did

      Yes, a few times
26. have you ever broken a bone?
Yes. I broke my right arm once.
27. Do you wear jewelry?  If so what jewelry do you wear?
My high school class ring (if you can call that jewelry).
28. How do you dress?
Just like any other normal person - shorts, sandals and t-shirts in the summer, blue jeans and sneakers in the winter with various long-sleeved shirts depending on the weather. I do like to wear flannel shirts in the fall though :)
29. How many keys are on your keyring?
      5
30. What time do you go to bed?  What time do you wake up?

Still stuck at home for the time being...
33. How many hours a day do you spend in the computer?

      Soda - especially Vanilla Coke.

  a. As an administrator?
     Hmmm... That's a good question...
  b. As an end user?
Quick reply, inline editing, news feeds and wireless modes...

Can't say I'm closer to any one team member than any other, although akabugeyes and I talk quite a bit...
