Button swap issues

I recently updated to SMF 1.0.7 from 1.0.0 (I started the board from GoDaddy).  I had tried the 1.1 but do not feel comfortable with something that is tried and tested; I have less than minimal knowledge about program language.  I recently noticed some issues with the upgrade.  My "New Poll" button and "New Message" button function backwards along with I have no longer getting my "New Message" icons to light as they once did.  It has become very frustrating for some of my board members and I would like to repair the damage but I do not have any idea how.  Also, my board runs very slow now.  I would chance the upgrade to 1.1 if that would solve my probelms but I don't want to lose any of my posts or calendar events.  Please help.
