Allow membergroup to hide from member list?

I posted this on a different board, and they suggested I might find help here, instead. Sorry for the double-post, if that's a problem.

I'm looking for help coding a way for a Membergroup to be 'invisible', i.e., not show up in the member list, not appear in the 'users online' stats listing, etc.?

I imagine it could be hard-coded with some sort of php-switch at the places where the information is displayed, but my php skills are still a little shaky. If there's nothing available, could somebody show me the syntax for a switch I could try? I can find the spots I want, and modify the code to fit.

Maybe an example for memberlist.template.php for starters?

Are you aware of that any user can hide himself from being online, using his profile?

Yeah, but that doesn't take their name off the memberlist, etc., right? It just doesn't flag them as being online...
