Using SMF uploading

Hey, I want to use SMFs attachment things for a modification i'm making. So i was wondering how does SMF do the uploading? I don't need the bit that deals with the posting, just like the encryption etc.
I take it that SMF uses just simple input files .

Could be a quite big question.
