Mod to "Group" Sub-Forums Into a Single Display

One of the boards I frequent (NFL-related) has their forums split by topic, much like this one.  This was originaly done to get political discussions out of the main forum.  It has since fragmented to a tech forum, a music forum, etc. etc.  Several people are complaining that they would like this forum merged back, others want different ones merged back, some want none, etc.

So my idea is for a "My Forum" feature that isn't really a forum.  The user would go to their control panel and select the forums that they want to view, then when they went to "My Forum" they would see the threads from all selected forums, sorted in whatever order they wanted.  They could respond to threads or create new ones from right there.  New threads would need to be created with an indication of which real forum they belong in.

My questions are:

1. Does something like this already exist for SMF?

2. If not, are there any current mods I can leverage?
