Is Lots of Processes "Sleeping" Bad?

I poked around the documentation for mySql and around here and I can't find  the answer to my question....

When I check on the processes of mySql on my server, I see *lots* of processes that are  marked as "Sleep." Is this a bad thing? Or is this totally benign? What is it doing and why do those processes hang around for so long?

Inquiring minds want to know! Thanks!

Hi Leah,

Assume you have persistant connections on, sleeping processes are just processes that are sitting waiting for something to do, they aren't really bad, although you can change their timeout if required, I think by default it's something stupidly long but in all honesty, they don't take much resources and are sat there ready to be used.
