Show all online user's avatars in main page

I would like to know if it's possible to show small thumbnails (maybe 20x20) of all online user's avatars on the main page of my site (not in the forums). I know that I can invoke the current user's avatar using SSI, but I think it would be cool to have all the avatars of the online users in a module, linked to their profile. Possible?
