I'm an experienced myBB user for many years and am thinking of changing to SMF.  The conversion tool is awesome and I have to thank those at SMF who created it.  Well done!  If I had any issues it had to do with the fact that I'm very unfamiliar with the workings of forum conversion, so had to go through two major learning curves first, that I thought could be of value to others in a similar situation.

The first major stumbling block was to understand that both databases of myBB and SMF have to be on the same server and in the same root folder for the conversion tool to recognize them.  What I then did was to make a thorough backup of my myBB Forum and Database first.  Then installed the SMF Forum to the same root folder as my myBB installation.  Once SMF was installed it was the primary installation.

I then uploaded the conversion tool - smf_2-0-mybb18x_converter.zip (https://download.simplemachines.org/index.php?converters;id=70) to the root folder and extracted the contents.  Then navigated to the URL  hxxp:mydomain.com/convert.php [nonactive]

The second stumbling block was when the converter page came up, the conversion tool was unable to access the myBB database to do the conversion.  So I had to learn the hard way that the  key to the conversion is that the database user of the myBB database should be given permission with ALL Privileges to access the SMF database and the other way round.  I was lucky, as I did it with cPanel.  I gave ALL privileges to the myBB database user for the SMF database and all privileges to the SMF database user for the myBB database.

Then a miracle occurred with the speed with which the conversion happened.  It was almost instantaneous.

I've now got a bit of a messy situation as my myBB and SMF installations are all in root, so I probably may think of deleting both the installations and start fresh with SMF only.

Again, many thanks to the authors of this conversion tool.  At least they can know that the smf_2-0-mybb18x_converter.zip is completely up to date for the most recent versions of both myBB and SMF.

Glad that conversion tool worked well! Yes the database user from SMF must have access to both databases.

Thank you.  In the end the files were not as messy as i thought it would be and it was very easy to identify the myBB files and folders.  What threw me was how much bulkier myBB is.  myBB database is 3MB plus and SMF only 276 kb.

Any way, now the big learning starts.   :D

With MyBB they put all the templates in the database which makes it bulky.

Hi, after the conversation, can all the original mybb database entries and root files be deleted?
Or is there a dependency?
Thanks.

Back again..
How is it possible to install smf into my root, that already has the index.php for mybb?

goldcoastcb.club [nofollow] (mybb)
goldcoastcb.club/smf [nofollow]

But then the install of smf creates it's own database.
I've tried both database passwords.
Attached screen grab is where I'm stuck.
thanks

update: I can't find anywhere on my host's (x10hosting.com) DirectAdmin Web Control Panel, to give both user databases full permission.

I have access to myphp with both databases listed, but as far as I know I can't set permissions from there. :-[

You can install smf to your mybb database and give that a try.

mybb site files >> goldcoastcb.club/ [nofollow]
smf site files >> goldcoastcb.club/smf [nofollow]

BUT...the new SMF database DB install goes into the preexisting mybb DB, with same DB user and password details.

LOL, I've got a headache. I'll give that a go after work.

thanks.

SMF uses different prefix for tables by default, or you can set your own during the installation. That way you can have two different softwares running in the same database, with different table prefixes ;)
The same is written in Installing SMF docs.
