what is SM's "Profile > Account Settings > SSH Public Key" option for ?

my profile here has something that my forum's profile doesn't have and it caught my attention.

Profile > Account Settings > SSH Public Key: "Please enter here your SSH public key. For help generating a key, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ssh-keygen"

should I be using this and what does it offer me, please ? I took the link but it only explained SSH keys to me and I already use them when logging in to my various systems.
The configuration of my Linux VPS (SMF 2.0 with 160+ mods & some assorted manual tweaks) can be found here and notes on my mods can be found here (warning: those links will take you to a drug related forum). My (House) music DJ dedication page is here

No, you shouldn't be using it. It's primarily for the developers to sign their commits.

no it is not, it is for access to the SM hosted git repo. only team members have such access.

Uh, how else would it work without signing? That's the entire point here...

you cant check out the repo without using the key last I recall.
