Would never need ads for a long long time. No need for it.
so this means you have paid membership?

We don't need that either.

notable revenue would be greater than $600/mo. then i would try to dupe this effort with another forum. i know i could build a brand and sell accessories, but I'd rather count on non-intrusive text ads for majority of the income.

Getting closer :)

Just started a second site (see sig line) to help us get there, lol..

Our online revenue is starting to become a greater percent of our monthly income, but I like to look at it like this.

Making money online for us at this point is kind of like finding money just sitting there on the side walk on our way to work.
Sometimes it's only 25 cents we find, but then other day's it maybe $40.00 or $50!

It's not everyday we find money on our way to work, but as time goes on it starts to be everyday that you find a little extra something.

If I ever do start making more money online day after day, week after week then I do at my day job I'm going to still keep my day job, because just just never know. :)

luvit,

How's it going? Have you started a site yet?

luvit

hard to believe i posted this back in february.  :D

i did not start my own forum. i finally got a call about a startup company looking for my expertise.
i finally have some balance between getting paid better and traveling less.

i may be considering doing my forum idea this winter  ;)

I think it would be cheeky for me to make money from the forum I help with, because it's not actually my forum. I just help look after it.

Well I will just be happy if I can cover my cost from donation from my forum. So far so good but we are now only in our first couple of month running on our own hosting package and with SMF. So I have managed to pay my first years hosting with a bit of cash over for development when needed  :D

Donations are just the tip of the iceburg.
Most donations come from members, not guest.

Members are just the tip of the iceburg too.
Most page views will come from guest visiting your site.

Guest and members will see ads.

Ads can do more then just pay the bill for the servers. :)

Paying for me xD. Forums have horrible CPM though unless it is very large and targeted.

Oh, I understand now, lol..

What type (static page, blog, wiki, etc..) of site do you find gets the best CPM?

vbgamer45

The best would be a site with great content. Content that is updated every day.
Just work on a topic that you know a lot about and build up a base.

I am starting a content site that integrates a forum.  The forum is restricted to paying members (once it gets going).  Members will get additional services that is specific to the target audience.  We'll have content that we generate as well as content that the forum generates.   In a sense, it's a blog/static content/forum hybrid.  Will post URL once it's up and running.

I hope to make some money from it.  Will report back on my experience...

black hat seo forums make loads.
£100 membership for a month to get BlackHat tips.

I find it funny as by signing up you're just going to get a message saying "make a forum and charge £100 for membership"...

If you are looking for a way to make any profit from a forum here is what to do.
Put on column of Google ADs on the left or right side of your forum. Then do like Simple Machines does and sell impressions of your ads because Adsense only pays you when people CLICK on the ad and only if the person hasn't clicked on a ad at your site before, so selling impressions gives you a much higher profit margin than adsense.

When we (5 people) started our forum it was with the intent of making it 100% free for all members. We also wanted to keep it clear of advertising.

Which means we all lose money on it, but as the forum is something we all enjoy running it doesn't matter. When spread over a year the cost to each of us is pretty small, even though 5 are now 3.

It's our intention to never ask members for payment or to have two tier membership levels where paying members get extra benefits.

We've seen recently more and more of our competitors starting to charge, they seem to think it's a great way to make money. We don't, it never has been something to make money from. Some of the excuses you see for charging are truely pathetic. Especially on forums that you know are on shared hosting.

In the future we may have to think about raising funds, it wont be from our members.

All the best - Duncan
