Issues With HUGE File Attachments

Hi.

I know I haven't been here for a few years, but that is because smf forums are so well done that I rarely need support!   8)

So I got a commission to make a website for a guy so web un-savvy he can't figure out dropbox or other file hosts.  His site does not need a forum, but I installed smf as a quick and easy way to exchange files via attachments.  He has long lectures on mp3 format and a few videos in varying formats, many of which are around 700 MB.  I need to get them to convert, compress, and post on the site.

I upped the allowed file attachment limit, but the site constantly times out with a "connection reset" error when huge files are tested by either of us.

Unfortunately, the site is hosted by GoDaddy.  Is this more of their quirks, or something inherent in smf, or possibly something else all together?

Any tips would help as we need to exchange huge files while the site is being readied and he is not even able to figure out how to make a multi-part archive or anything   :o

I'm looking for other ways to make this happen, but I am fond of smf forums and thought if we exchanged files this way while the site is being made, I may convince him to have a discussion forum on the finished site.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.  I suspect this is a GoDaddy thing, as most of the time I see questions about server related issues on a site hosted by them, it is

However; it never hurts to ask!

Thanks for any ideas anyone may have.

EDIT - We are using SMF 2.0.10 if that helps.

You have to raise your php limits not sure if godaddy allows you to change this
But here is a link on how to do so

Thanks so much for the quick reply!

This site has amazing support.

I think godaddy allows increasing RAM - but they charge for it.  The same may apply to php limits.

For a temporary thing, that seems a bit over the top.  I'll ask him what he wants to do - learn something new, or pay to do it another way...

Thanks again for the quick answer.

Peace

Consider having him store the lectures on a site like SoundCloud or Dropbox. Those files, especially in those sizes, can add up very quickly especially when people start downloading them and the server bandwidth goes through the roof.

Especially being hosted on GoDaddy...

Thanks - I forgot about soundcloud!

But sadly, he was unable to figure out dropbox.

No worries about the file size once uploaded as the site is not live yet, and I'll be doing a single download of whatever he uploads then deleting it from the server.  I'll then convert, compress, and post a more reasonable file.

It's just the getting the files over a great distance causing issues and thought even a temp install of smf would simplify it enough for a web newbie who has very poor logic skills but is a paying client and therefore has to be hand-held and some way found to do this.

I am on the verge of telling him to buy a 16 or 32 GB usb drive, fill it, and mail it to me!

Why are all web clients like this?  I guess if they knew the web, they would not need to pay somebody to get their stuff posted

If you want simplistic, there's always https://www.wetransfer.com/

I didn't realize you were just transferring files, not setting up a forum for discussion of these lectures and for download by users. xD

I was trying to talk him into a forum and this was a way to introduce him to them.

But this is a religious website and I think he may be afraid of allowing  ...  heathens (?) to speak their mind.  I think he wants to talk at people more than he wants to talk to them  (based on our conversations).

It's up to him.  The forum is there, and I made categories to show him how I envisioned it's layout, but he's on the wall.

If wetransfer is easier for him than dropbox, then that may be the best answer!  I never saw that site when looking for free file hosts so will go have a peek now.

Thanks for the lead!

@Sockratease, can we mark this topic as solved? Does the solution zilladotexe provided you works?

Just on a side note, it is *extremely* unlikely that you will ever be able to load such big files over PHP. It was just not designed to do so and you will hit several timeouts/limits besides the ones imposed by SMF.

You can. It just requires a script that uploads the file in steps. In other words, it would need to cut the file into chunks, and upload each chunk separately, then put the file back together. If I'm not mistaken, Arantor's gallery mod does something like that.

Yes, it's true. But it's not common to find that as it requires both client and server side split/merge ;)

Absolutely yes!  Please mark this as solved.

And thanks again for all the help and further thoughts.

We are just going to use a 16 GB Thumb drive and the mail.

It's tough when you have a client with very little idea how to use the internet for anything beyond looking at websites.  I knew I was in for trouble when he couldn't figure out dropbox.  I did install "ProjectSend" which is a php file uploader and could handle the large files, but it turns out he only has just over 500 MB of RAM and that means a 700 MB file is out of the question.  GoDaddy said that the time outs were from the site's RAM being less than the file size in question.  But we all know what to think of their support...

So this project which was supposed to be a simple website just keeps getting more complicated.

But a job is a job and I have no problems with complicated so long as compensation is there - which it is, so we'll get by.

He is warming up to having a discussion forum on the site, so hopefully the install can stay and he'll find a decent staff to help him run it  (he wanted me to run it, but I told him that as a Born Again Pagan, such work runs counter to my Sacrilegious Freedom 8) )  (I am obviously not intolerant of others' beliefs, but making a website is one thing - while running a forum is an entirely other kind of job and I am not sure I could be talked into doing that!)

Thanks again for all the help and for providing such great software!  I've installed quite a few smf forums over the years and still help run a few.  Your software and support are the best!

Two points:

1. You can always mark your thread solved yourself.
2. I freaking love your display name (the way it's spelled). :P

Two replies:

1. I honestly never even noticed the marking of threads as solved before - not never saw the option to do it myself, but never even knew it was a thing that existed   ::)

2. You might rethink that if you knew it's origins!

Almost implies not quite, sooo...

Let's just say that without any formal education and being completely self taught with regards to web design and work, it's tough to get any real work.

But my first paying work was for a naughty adult website about certain  ...  Fetishes.

I needed a user name that would help me blend in as a forum admin, but still wanted to sound a bit intellectual.  So I narrowed it down to either Sockratease or Playtoe!  I chose the teacher rather than the student.  I liked the name enough to use it in most places online.

And I have no worries about people making any connections.  I can be proud of it since I am now engaged to the woman whose site I was making

The funny part is how I am now making a site for a bible study group.  Weird how the only paying web work I can ever land is for porn sites and churches!  I help at a few art sites, but that is volunteer work so not a "real" job.

We live in a very strange, but highly amusing, universe!

Steve

Indeed we do. And congrats on the engagement. ;D
