It isn't robbery when you have the free will to buy it or not :)

SMF 7 is where it gets good. That has time travel. You can go back and post before the guy who flamed you. :P

Hehe, yes, it's true, but in Spanish when you say "robbery" you say "very high price" so I mean vBulletin is so expensive!
When you start a community you can't bet it will work, so spending 200 bucks is crazy.

Robert.

I am Portuguese :P But still, you only buy it if you want :) And yes, it is really too expensive for the software they sell.

Just asking a harmless question: I know all the buzz is about 2.0 final but i'm also wondering about the 1.1.x branch. It still says "Simple Machines LLC" at the bottom of my 1.1.13 forum and from the official bug tracker on this site, there are still 15 bugs that need fixing for 1.1.13, so can we (1.1.x users) safely assume that an update/patch for 1.1.13 will be released together with 2.0 final or some time later after 2.0 final is released?

Also, i would like to ask if 1.1.x branch will be retired? When? After 2.1 final is released? What is planned for 1.1.x after 2.0 final is released?
I think it's important not to undermine the importance of 1.1.x branch since it's still the predominating SMF version on active/production sites.
Many people have paid for modifications for 1.1.x and spent a great number of hours customizing their forums to look just like they want, so i think it should definitely not be taken for granted that most or all of us will shift to 2.0 final when it's released. Hence, it is my strong opinion that support and development (i mean primarily bug fixing since new features are obviously meant for 2.0+) for 1.1.x should not be disregarded after 2.0 final.

Illori

there will be further security patches only released from this point further for 1.1.1* and 2.0.*. depending on what the bugs are they may or may not get fixed.

Thanks for the reassuring reply, Illori. SMF 1.1.x is still keeping many thousands of communities thriving, so it would be a severe blow if it was announced that 1.1.x was retired.

So, the 1.0 branch is dead now?

Theres going to be no major updates to the 1.1.x branch unless its a security issue. Its not dead just not going to have further development work done. If your 1.1.x forum runs fine then its not a real issue. If you want to take advantage of the latest features then you will need to convert to 2.0 when it is finally released.

JBlaze

1.0 branch has been dead since the development of the 2.0 branch. I'm sure the 1.1 branch will be archived soon after the release of 2.0 gold.

The 1.1 series is almost 7 years old...

IK... I was asking about 1.0 (not 1.1) and asking if there were still going to be security updates for it. ;)

But I'm assuming the security fixes will keep coming...

I don't even use 1.0 for a site though, I just have one on my test server.

Currently, none of the branches are "dead". 1.0 and 1.1 branches will only get security patches when necessary, as they been getting for quite some time and obviously 2.0 branch is active. If there is any changes to this, it will be officially announced.

The bugs are being slowly squashed (based on the bug tracker) at the rate of one or two bugs per day. Only 15 left to go for the 2.0 release. One more week might be tight given the speed of development, but i guess it's all up to SiNaN to slow down on his anime munching (i've seen your username on quite a few anime sites in the comments areas! LOL), so waiting is the only word around here.

[SiNaN]

As I said before, the only issue that was blocking the release was related to OpenID and it was dealt with yesterday. The other bugs in the tracker were marked as "not release critical".

I haven't been working on fixing bugs, except for this OpenID issue and another critical bug, since we initiated release process. Fixing stuff when you are so close to a release is dangerous in that there is little to no time for wide testing.

Besides, how I use my time is ultimately my choice. I'm merely a volunteer here and I have no obligation to work on SMF. I'll spend time on SMF as much as I want and as long as I enjoy.

Lol, the day is not far when people will complaint that this team member is taking a lot of time in eating his food (I was about to give some other naughty example :P) and not giving enough time on SMF. Team don't be surprised that day, get prepared ;).
