I have just installed SMF on a free account at Awardspace - its working ok but when click on FORUM PROFILE i get 403 error

http://dslbuddy.mywebcommunity.org/SMF/index.php

can anyone help?

thanks

kat

Try going to Admin>Packages>File Permissions and making sure it's set to "Standard".

A 403 usually means that a file's read-protected.

snadge

thanks for your reply

it says all the folders are 'writable' anyway?  tried setting to standard but still the same (do i need to enter database username & password underneath?)

anyway theyre all green (writeable)

all other links work just fine

my host only has 1 database with 10Mb limit (free account) is this related?

thanks

kat

"Writeable" doesn't mean "Readable". ;)

Yes, you'll need your password details.

snadge

entered my details (it goes through whether i enter the login or not...is this right?, should it throw up an error if the login isnt filled in?)

chose USE PREDEFINED PERMISSION PROFILE on STANDARD (KEY FILES WRITABLE)

yet the problem persists..... like i say its the ONLY one that doesnt work...

is it because I only have one database? Im totally new at all this 'hosting a forum' malarky although im quite good with this sort of thing in general

actually - it seems stupid to have 'forum profile' where it is.. as its in the list when viewing your forum profile... to replicate this i click PROFILE and in column on left is:-
Modify Profile
Account Settings
Forum Profile <- this is what throws 403, should it be there?
Look and Layout
Notifications
Personal Messaging
Buddies/Ignore List

thanks

Yes, it should be there, and SMF only uses 1 database, so those are not the cause.  I can't answer for sure what the real issue is though. I tend to agree with K@ that there may still be a file permission issue somewhere.  Do you have FTP access to your account? Perhaps you can use an ftp client to view the files and permissions and possibly change them that way. If not, your host may have to set the permissions for you. Many free hosts limit your ability to set file permissions.

snadge

you would have thought if that were the case then a lot of stuff on the forum would not work? every link ive tried on the forum works except this one.

I do have access to the server via filezilla,

ive just checked permission on filezilla and all folders and files have read access across the board (owner, public and group)

could there be a file missing?

thanks

busterone

Possibly.  You can extract the install archive and then upload it in it's entirety (excluding install.php of course).  That will ensure that all the proper files are in the proper directories. Then after uploading, you may still need to verify the permissions.

If you have installed any modifications, you may want to uninstall them before the file upload, then reinstall them afterwards.

snadge

thanks, i may try that - first I think I will message the hosts to see if they know what it could be, is there any direct support for SMF?

thanks

busterone

Direct support? Are you referring to giving out host admin credentials and a forum admin password for someone to take a look themselves? Yes, but be very careful who you give that info to, and never post it in the open boards.  If so, use the PM system if they request the info.

Take a look here first. http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=228940.0

snadge

actually i didnt mean that but thanks for suggesting it :)

How would i go about sorting that out? - ive PM'd support at Awardspace (even though it has nothing to do with them, they may be able to help)

thanks again

kat

'course, it may not be your site.

At a pure hunch, I'm wondering if it's your browser.

Can you try a different one, to see what happens?

snadge

nope, happens in all browsers (IE9 shows its own page rather than the hosts)

this is the link that makes it happen
http://dslbuddy.mywebcommunity.org/SMF/index.php?action=profile;area=forumprofile;u=1

ive had other users replicate the problem

Illori

as a guest that page loads just fine

nothing in logs related to this

and I have EzPortal installed but it was doing it before I installed that package

snadge

sussed it...

the free account I use on Awardspace has heavy word filtering due to abuse in the past, the page contains the word "MSN" and is blocked which throws up the 403... I have to remove the word or upgrade the account.

is it possible to remove the word?

at least we found out what it was :)

thanks for your help guys , you have been excellent  8)

Illori

i would suggest you move to a host that does not block based on words used on pages, you will face issues in the future with this.
