Title: Can't install packages or edit index.css
Post by: [KmZ]KaMiKaZe on December 21, 2012, 05:52:11 AM
Hi!
Im having some problems on my forums, I have no clue when this occurred but it does feel like its something in database thats gone nuts.

Heres the problem im having:
When i try to install a new mod it redirects me to a login page and says
"Warning!

Only registered members are allowed to access this section.
Please login below or register an account with Vikings On Shrooms. "

I thought that someone messed with some file on the server but I made replace everything with a month old backup that I know works, But still it keeps asking me to login.

I've cleared the forums Cache and my own cache.
It's not a mod thats causing this since i used 1 month old backup when everything were working just fine.
Checked so all files are writeable and checked chmod and all seems normal.

So i can't be 100% sure but it feels like it has something to do with the database since the backup didn't work, Anyone else had same problem all the suddenly?
I can't use a backup for database cause I never made one, Yeah i know im dumb but at least I will learn something from this experience :D

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Yeah ive clean out all history, Probably should of mentioned that.

Is it possible something gone wrong in database cause of mods that been installed?
I really don't wanna make a clean install again because of this =(

Well, you don't list what mods were installed....   but it is unlikely that there is anything in the DATABASE that would cause that behavior

I just think its the database Im not 100% sure like i said.

But i Made a complete backup from last month when everything worked for sure :S
And what i mean by complete backup I mean I copied all files and replaced... But Now that i think of it I probably should of deleted all files and then upload, But doesn't feel like thats really necessary.

and if you log in on that warning page, does it work after that?

No it just goes to frontpage, So basicly everytime I try to install something now or edit any css file it takes me to login page and when i login takes me to frontpage =( I tried updating page and hoping that would work but nope.

so, let me get this straight...

you log in to your forum
you go to the admin section
you can do anything you want in the admin section... BUT
when you go to the packages action it triggers this?
or is it only when you try to install a package?

How are you editing your CSS files?

Almost, I can upload the mods BUT when I hit the "Install Mod" button it redirects me to the login page. So only when i try to install a package

And when it comes to editing the css through the admin panel "themes and layout"--> "modify themes" --> "Edit this theme's stylesheets." --> click index.css, it redirects me to login... However this isnt a issue for me since we can just simply download the css files and edit them that way.

These are the only 2 things ive notice that redirects to login page and then to frontpage

that actually sounds like a problem with your host or maybe an htaccess file...    it certainly has nothing to do with the database

Wierd thing is it all worked fine few weeks ago, But yeah im gonna send a mail to my hosting company and see if they've done any changes that could affect the website.

Which .htaccess would that be? and what should be in it? Cause yeah i can totally see it being the htaccess file but I have never touched those. Just want to rule that one out.

I guess i'll have to try to do a fresh install aswell to just check if its same problem so I can start calling and harass the hosting company =)

BTW thanks for trying to help me out I do Appreciate it alot

well, smf does not come with any htaccess file by default...

you could have lots of stuff in the htaccess (for example, I have denials set for IPs which I know were used in a hacking attempt last year and I have redirects from an old directory back to the root)
you are not using any sef urls or other "pretty urls" are you?

As you pointed out earlier it might be the host or htaccess file and its the damn host.
I just made a complete fresh install with another database and got same problem. So yeah someone gonna get a angry call from me and get their christmas ruined... na but I'll ask what changes they made and i'll come back to you =)

Thanks for all your help Kindred
