Title: SMF 1.0.3 released
Post by: Owdy on March 25, 2005, 03:21:27 AM
Simple Machines is happy to bring you the latest update to SMF. As always, it contains some bugfixes. While most of the changes are minor, one of the fixes is important. We strongly suggest that you upgrade to this version, because it's more stable and secure.

What's changed:

As always, we would appreciate if you give us constructive feedback about this release, as well as bug reports.

If you are upgrading from 1.0.2, the easiest way to update is through the package manager.  If not, you only need to use the "update" package as it includes only the changed files since 1.0's release. However, if you have any mods installed it would be better to use the "upgrade" package because it contains all the files for an SMF installation. Remember that you can use the "upgrade" package to come from any previous version of SMF, as well as from YaBB SE 1.5.1 or higher.

Thanks,
Simple Machines

The package manager failed to update $boarddir/index.php correctly

The following needs to be corrected (in smf_1-0-3.mod)

<search for>
$forum_version = 'SMF 1.0.3';
</search for>

<replace>
$forum_version = 'SMF 1.0.3';
</replace>

should be

<search for>
$forum_version = 'SMF 1.0.2';
</search for>

<replace>
$forum_version = 'SMF 1.0.3';
</replace>

I've problems using package manager to upgrade due to ftp permission problem but I'm reading up on that, so not an issue.

But I would like to know what files or folders must not be chmod to 777 or if chmod to 777 for upgrading purposes, must be chmod back to the original permission after upgrading?

Thanks!

Upgrade went great, apart from updating the update log, although that's never updated correctly for me since the 1.0.1 update? Ah well, thanks all  :)

Why chmod 777 is NOT a security risk (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=2987.0)...

its not a security risk, if the admin knows what he does. Updating went fine like allways. my member reports that it is running faster now although i see no changes or idea why. but, if member happy, i`m happy. :) bad english, just german, sry.

I am again having issues with getting the package manager to install this patch:

2: fopen("/<root>/community/Sources/News.php", "w") - Permission denied
File: /<root>/community/Sources/Subs-Package.php
Line: 1454

Would fix_ownership help with this or is it something else?

I'm new to SMF so this was my first opportunity to use the package manager to update my forum, and I have to admit that I'm impressed. I've never been able to apply a forum update so quickly or easily. Kudos to the SMF team!

It should be OK to upgrade. That is the beauty with the bridge. It doesnt alter any SMF corefiles, so upgrading should be easy ;)

I just upgraded myself with no problems (using bridge 3.02).
But backup is always wise.

Use the package manager in SMF...  there is an option in the text above the installed packages that says somewthing like "upgrade here" or something like that.

You do not have to use any of the full installations or upgrades or updates....

Tried on one board... worked great.

One the second board... on the pre-test I got success on everything except:

15. Execute Modification ./Themes/default/Display.template.php Failure

and then
"Some of the files this package needs to modify are not writable. This needs to be changed by logging into FTP and chmoding the files."

This file is set to 777

any ideas?

I'm afraid the failure means that it's not automatically updatable.  This likely means you have modified it - which is a bad idea for the default theme.

Hello Everyone,

Have a question actually two.  In my package manager I am getting this message:

A problem has been found in the system that sends critical database messages.  You can install this patch(click here to install) to easily up date yourself to the latest version.

Is this the place to download the new version 1.0.3?  Also if it is there is a file missing "Execute Modification ./changelog.txt"

How do I get this file?

If that message I typed is not where to get 1.0.3, how do I get it through my package manager?

Plus if that message is not the updated version how do I fix the critical database message problem?

Sorry was more than two questions.  Thanks for your help.

yes this is the place to update to the lastest version.  only if you have 1.0 and up.

That's the changelog.txt file from 1.0.2.  If you want the file, and want the update to go perfectly, you could copy said file from the smf_1-0-2_update archive in the archived downloads...

Woohoo new SMF.  Very excited about that.  I'm going to be updating my forum soon, I have a flu-like thing so very sick and spent last night all in the bathroom...yeah not so fun, as I get better.  But, before I do I wonder if it is possible for a complete list of changes to be made available for me.  I realize there is usually a changelog but can someone, such as Unknown or someone less busy, post the link to the list of changes or send the list to me via e-mail ([email protected])?

I like to show my staff what has changed and why we should upgrade.

Additionally, do we know how SMF 1.0.3 is reacting to any of the popular mods?  For example, I'm running the following mods and I realize some of them are fairly popular:

1.     Ultimate Shoutbox      1.22
2.    Pie Chart Mod    1.2
3.    SMF 1.0.1 Update Package    1.0.1
4.    OnLine Users Today    1.2
5.    SMF 1.0.2 Update Package    1.0.2b
6.    Unreplied Topics    1.02
7.    Thread's Bookmarks    1.1    [ Uninstall ] [ List Files ] [ Delete ]
8.    Faster Parsecode    1.07
9.    ModSettings Textarea    1.02
10.    Spoiler Tag    1.02
11.    Topic Ratings    1.02
12.    G&S_Sticky    1.0
13.    Visual Warning / Post Moderation    1.21
14.    The Bar Of Experience    1.1
15.    Location Mod    1.1.1
16.    Display Membername on Hover    1.0
17.    Locked Boards    1.1
18.    Membergroup Colors In Posts 1.1

I want to ensure that my forum, forum.wargamingforums.com, won't die or lock up when updating to SMF 1.0.3.  I usually uninstall all mods before doing an update and then install them again, one at a time, to see if there's any problems.  But, I just like to check beforehand.  Be prepares as they taught us in the Boy Scouts.  :)

I have successfully update SMF to 1.0.3 and everything is working great. One small thing that I can't figure out though, is that in the 'Admin Center' shows that I'm still using 1.0.2, but when I click on '(more detailed)' and view the comparison between all files they are all the current version. I had to manually edit a few of my template files, but they worked all just fine. Any ideas?

Hey there,

I just gotta tell yah'all, over the years i've ran alot of different boards.. heh pretty much tried em all php, php/MySql and cgi/perl and the update of this board was without a doubt the simplest i've ever experienced. I'm still running a few PhpBB's on some of my sites but after this i'll be looking for a db converter. Totally Awesome SMF, thanks  :D

Title: Confessions of a newbie
Post by: megacelt on March 29, 2005, 10:37:29 PM
I screwed up, and know that ignorance of best practices is no excuse.  I confess to having set up my board by modifying files that are in the default theme, as well as in my non-standard theme.  It works fine, but now, reading the upgrade posts, I realize the error of my ways.

Now I have two questions on mitigating the damage.

1.  I have a backup of my current board under public_html/smfbackup/smf while my live version is under public_html/smf.  I am thinking that logging into the backup, applying the backup to it as a test and fix would be the way to go.  But when I try to do this, I wind up being logged into the live directory version instead.  Suggestions?

Thank you SMF, it was a nice upgrade. But i still have two worries:

1. my footer "powered by SMF 1.02" not changed;

2."A problem has been found in the system that sends critical database messages. You can install this patch (click here to install) to easily update yourself to the latest version." still appears when get into the Package Manager, what should i do about it?

many thanks for your wonderful work of SMF, just like it !!!

I'm afraid the failure means that it's not automatically updatable.  This likely means you have modified it - which is a bad idea for the default theme.

I get the same display.php update failure but I didn't modify the default template.  At least not deliberately.

I've upgraded from 1.0.2 to 1.0.3 using the manual package. Everything works fine, except that the main forum page has for some reason become accessible to registered members only. Unregisered visitors see the "Only registered members are allowed to access this section" message. How can I change this setting?

I would personally use a file comparsion tool, such as ConTEXT (www.context.cx) to compare the files with the originals.  This would allow you to see what changes you made, and make them in your own theme only.

In any case, it's likely you should be able to apply the package manager update to the live site without losing any of your custom changes.  It only makes changes, it doesn't replace files.

Quote2.  What is the best approach to cleaning my errors in altering default theme files mixed up with alterations to the non-standard files?

File comparison is, in my opinion, the only good way.

Exactly.

There's a setting in Edit Features and Options to allow guests to do more than just login or register.  I don't remember it's name off hand, but just search for "guests" on that page.

At the bottom of my SMF home page it says it's 1.0.2, although some files such as SplitTopics.php say SMF 1.0.  This and the following make me question which version I have before updating to 1.0.3:

When attempting to split a very recent topic, I get the following error message. This has happened only on one topic.

QuoteDuplicate entry '0-4' for key 2
File: /home/wiztom/public_html/SMF_forum/Sources/SplitTopics.php
Line: 358

Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade. Your forum files are currently at version SMF 1.0.2, whereas your database is at version SMF 1.0. It is recommended that you execute the latest version of upgrade.php.

Which path do I need to take to 1.0.3?

TIA

Well, I did a fresh backup, and a go at the upgrade.  The initial file list showed a failure for Display.template.php.  Assuming this was because I had modified the file, I I uploaded an unmodified version, and it indicated that all was ok.  So I went ahead with process, and all was successful acording to the message. However, I decided to look further and found this Edited except for where there are discrepancies:

SMF File              Your Version         Current Version
SMF Package           SMF 1.0.3         SMF 1.0.3

ManageMembers.php       1.0.3                    1.0.2
Current Templates        1.0                 1.0.3
Display.template.php       1.0                        1.0.3

Arcade.php               Arcade 1.1                 ??
Arcade2.php              Arcade 1.1                ??
ArcadeAdmin.php          Arcade 1.1             ??
Chat.php                        ??                    ??
Arcade.template.php       1.1                        ??
ArcadeAdmin.template.php ??                    ??
Chat.template.php        ??                          ??
Arcade.english.php        1.1                  ??
MsgIcon.php   1.0 Beta 6                         ??

I assume I don't need to worry about the mod addition files, but do I need to remedy the first three?

1.    Execute Modification    ./changelog.txt    Failure
2.    Execute Modification    ./index.php    Success (rest are success)

UPDATE:  I have no idea what I did BUT I did get it to work. One thing is I didn't understand the importance of the FTP server information at the bottom. I corrected an error in it, then got the "proceed" function, still got two errors, went and changed the files to 777 and now it's done.

Ok, learning more about this than I wanted - but it's fun to see it work.

Says I need to change permission but I don't know how to change permission on a file "in" a tar.gz package through ftp

I know someone mentioned this in an earlier post but could you address it again in very simple terms (grin). Stress level too high.

I have changelog.txt 3/11/05 and I put a copy in packages folder (original is in /smf/ folder) and put permission to 777 -

When I downloaded both .zip and tar.giz and tried to upload them from my computer I got the "package corrupt" message on both.

Three strikes and I'm yelling for help.  :'(

Thanks!

I realize it is not something I need in order to update but I daresay it is rather important.  One shouldn't willy-nilly make changes without having a reason to make that change.  Consequently, although you don't think the changelog is important I still want a copy.  Do you happen to have one?  If not, will someone who has a copy make it available for me?

On closer inspection, I realize that the Display.template.php "1.0  vs.  1.0.3" version discrepancy is under "current themes", and the default theme Display.template.php is showing as version 1.0.3, so I believe this is as it should be?

Or should I take the default theme Display.template.php 1.0.3, alter a copy with the changes in my current themes version, and put it in my "current theme"?

Everything worked fine, but I still have a couple of questions if it's not too much trouble.
How important is it to chmod those files back to 644?
and in the admin panel it says I'm running " Current SMF version: SMF 1.0.3" at the bottom of the page it says "SMF 1.0.2 for Mambo" Is that very important?

1. You can reset it to 644 if you want but I recomend 777, there isnt anything wrong with that.
2.Thats because the mambo bridge needs updated (I dont think the new one is out yet) (Not very important)

Looks fine.  The changes are in the first post.

Any ideas?

Are you using the Mambo Bridge?  You may have to update it too.

When attempting to split a very recent topic, I get the following error message. This has happened only on one topic.

Same, and also go to Admin -> Forum Maintenance -> Find and repair all forum errors.

Current Templates        1.0                 1.0.3
Display.template.php       1.0                        1.0.3

If you haven't modified ManageMembers.php, and no mods have, you can replace it with a clean version from the upgrade zip file.  The Display template shouldn't be a problem, and is caused by your current theme.

For the package manager, you have that package already; you need to change the permission on the files OUTSIDE the Packages directory, not inside it.  It is actually changing those files, which is why it needs permission to do so.

The changelog is available in the upgrade, install, and update archives on the downloads page.

Easiest way would be to modify your Display template with the change as per the modification file in the link I posted above (the package on mods.simplemachines.org.)

QuoteAre you using the Mambo Bridge?  You may have to update it too.

You are right. In the file $mosConfig_absolute_path/components/com_smf/smf.php around line 23:

$forum_version = 'SMF 1.0.2';

change to:

$forum_version = 'SMF 1.0.3';

Or um that may be a big duh for most everyone, but just for documentation. Thanks ::)

Running the 'Admin->Forum Maintenance->Find and Repair any errors' also fixed the versioning issue. You ROCK!!

Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade. Your forum files are currently at version SMF 1.0.3, whereas your database is at version SMF 1.0.2. It is recommended that you execute the latest version of upgrade.php.

Got this error when installing a MOD.
What should I do?

I updated to 1.0.3 and noticed the forum was much slower. I thought it was just my server.
After it being slow all day now I looked more into it. Just the forum is slow. Other sites on the server are just fine.
What could be causing this?

I think something changed regarding the search feature to make it more in depth.  Perhaps, that could be causing a slow down.  However, I'm on 1.0.3 and haven't noticed any slowness.  I also thought other made changes would, in fact, increase the loading.  But, I may be thinking of a thread here [Unknown] created to help us save bandwidth.  Anywho, sorry.  That's all I can come up with but hopefully one of the mods/devs/etc can come up with something to assist you.

These two sound related.  SMF 1.0.3 shouldn't have any performance-related changes in it from 1.0.2, so you may wish to contact your host.  If you don't believe me, try downgrading.

Hey guys,

I *think* i have upgraded to 1.0.3, i had 1.0.0 , but when i uploaded all the files and tried to run upgrade.php it said ;
The upgrader was unable to obtain write access to Upgrade.php.

If you are using a linux or unix based server, please ensure that the file is chmod'd to 777.
If your server is running Windows, please ensure that the internet guest account has the proper permissions on it.

Click here to try again.

now i only use the xp ftp,, and dont know how to change the chmod settins using it ??

so then i tried using update instead of upgrade but then hit the problem i couldnt get onto my site... so i had to click all 9 of the permision boxes before it would allow me autherisation to see my site, now, i STILL cant run upgrade.php it says the same and have to have all 9 permission boxes ticked to see the forum, however the site seems to think it is 1.0.3 and i have lost all my mods ?

please help, the site is www.worldofcichlids.co.uk/forum

thanks

This is pretty embarassing, but I am not able to upgrade my smf
Currently at 1.0.2
I was able to upgrade easy enough last time, but I don't remember how I did it
I did try to find the help I needed here in the forum, but I can't seem to put it all together

I tried to upload the upgrade after downloading to my PC
The file transfer was all wacky-that is, the only way it would take the files is if I did them one at a time.
My ftp client is Fire FTP (FireFox extension)
That got so confused, I hosed my site
After restoring from a backup, I have a message that I did not remove all of 1.0.3

If some very patient nice person would give me a hand, that would be great
Feel free to email me directly at [email protected]

Arcade I expect, thanks [UNKNOWN]

It was caused by Arcade, uninstalling it still left the fault, in an arcade array, in the ManagePermissions file

Heh, it happens sometimes.  Have you considered trying a different FTP client, such as SmartFTP or FileZilla?

Here is the difference in url output between the yahoo icon on a message:

http://messenger.yahoo.com/edit/send/?.target=theksman

and the url output from the member list:

http://opi.yahoo.com/online?u=theksman&m=g&t=0

The latter results only in the yahoo icon being displayed in the browser window, nothing else.

Also, both are not generating a new browser window, so it takes them from the site.

Finally, the http://messenger.yahoo.com/edit/send/?.target=theksman starts a new java instance of yahoo messenger, and if you already have messenger open, it fails.

I would really like to resolve this one as apparently my users really like this feature, as I am hearing from them about it not working :)

Whew!  Ok, I was terrified of upgrading.  I was still using 1.0.1 and being new to all of this, I wasn't sure what changes I had made.  I was using some mods and a different theme (which I did make changes to).  I couldn't recall if I'd ever made changes to the default template or not (though I was at least 70% sure I hadn't).  So, I held my breath and decided to try the upgrade via Package Manager.  First thing I noticed was that I was going to be upgrading to 1.0.2.  I thought about that for a few minutes and decided that must mean I needed to upgrade to it first, so I tried it.  Worked like a charm.  So...did the upgrade thing again, and sure enough, it now said I was going to be upgrading to 1.0.3.  So, I went for it, and lickety-split, the thing was done and working perfectly.  As far as I can tell, nothing went wrong with the mods either.  What a beautiful experience!  Thank you for such an easy upgrade!

I've run into a problem where the package installer requests FTP information to make files writeable. It appears to fail with the credentials I supply. I could CHMOD the files myself if I knew which files are causing the problem. I do not know for certain where the procedure is failing, other than that I continue to see the screen asking for FTP credentials.

Help would be greatly appreciated.

All the pre-tests say Success, but when I proceed, I get this messge:

2: copy(/home/gamedev/public_html/changelog.txt~): failed to open stream: Permission denied
File: /home/gamedev/public_html/Sources/Subs-Package.php
Line: 1285

I chmod everything to 777, and ran the fix_permissions.php tool, and still the same error.. Anything else I missed?

Thanks.

Why do you want to uninstall?  All of the bugs that I had were fixed with 1.0.3.  I personally wouldn't want to go back and have to manually fix the bugs.

I don't know what's wrong but get:
Upgrading...
Creating new tables and inserting default data... Unsuccessful!
This query:

    CREATE TABLE smf_log_search (
    ID_SEARCH tinyint(3) unsigned NOT NULL default '0',
    ID_TOPIC mediumint(8) unsigned NOT NULL default '0',
    ID_MSG int(10) unsigned NOT NULL default '0',
    relevance smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL default '0',
    num_matches smallint(5) unsigned NOT NULL default '0',
    PRIMARY KEY (ID_SEARCH, ID_TOPIC)
    ) TYPE=MyISAM;

Caused the error:

    Table 'smf_log_search' already exists

when triing to upgrade. I ran repair_settings.php but that didn't help to finish the upgrade. Is my forum ruined or can it be revived?

Now it says:
Upgrading the forum...
Don't worry, we will be back shortly with an updated forum. It will only be a minute ;).

I have just now discovered a bug in SMF 1.0.3 that I hadn't even noticed since the upgrade.  Apparently, even when all regular members were "disallowed" to lock and delete topics, they could lock and delete the topics that they make.  In order to fix it, I had to change the lock and delete own thread permissions from "disallow" to "deny".  Everything is functioning fine now, but why were members granted these permissions when they were disallowed?

Every member is in 2 groups. The post group and the regular members or another "special" group. If one group allows editing it must be denied in the other to prevent it.

You don't need it.  It will show up before the servers or anything, on the front page of the package manager.

This is not a bug.  Go to their profile and select "Show Permissions".  Do not use deny if you're not absolutely sure you know what it means and want to use it.  In this case, you could have moderators no longer able to lock or remove topics.

i keep getting the following error when I try to install smf acrcade:

Table '*****.smf_games_caterogy' doesn't exist
File: /home/****/public_html/jamug/Sources/ArcadeAdmin.php
Line: 113

Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade. Your forum files are currently at version SMF 1.0.3, whereas your database is at version SMF 1.0.2. It is recommended that you execute the latest version of upgrade.php.

At first i thought it was an smf arcade error because of the missing table - but then the notation mentioned something re the upgrade. I installed smf arcade AFTER upgrading by the way.

I also noticed [unknown]'s suggestion re upgrade.php but have no idea how to follow what he suggested... for us "slow"-bies could ya xplain a lil clearer?

Thanks guys.

My apologies Owdy, it's just that part of the error has to do with the update - the last section sez that I have 1.0.3 files but 1.0.2 database.

Seeing as [Unknown] had replied to a similar problem earlier - but I was unclear on exactly what he was saying I decided to put it here.

Will post as suggested.

 ;D Howdy Guys and Gals! I'm a recent convert to SMF, have been running several other boards for a couple of years now and am just really tired of the amount of maintenance those "other guys" require.  I've got my business board on XMB, and my online gaming community on phpBB. I doubt if I change the business forums over any time soon, but I've loaded a fresh new load of 1.03 and am VERY IMPRESSED!

This stuff's the 'poo'.  (using nicer words than normal) I have two questions for the group here, and I apologize in advance if this is the wrong place for these:

I'm pretty good at working within the php and bbcode environment, if you ever had phpBB and had to modify your boards you'd know what I mean, I've spent hundreds of hours pouring over files on my previous board and was especially happy with SMF's way of handling updates, packages, etc.

I'd like to say I'm a 100% convert, but still on the fence post.  Would like some more templates but I understand that SMF is farily new and maybe doesn't have a huge development team, so I might have to do some of my own. However, before going there I'd like to know that SMF is right for me. If anyone here can answer mainly the first question above would be most helpful.

Warmest wishes to all!!  8)

  • Another SMF user has told me that he got a conversion program or something from here, that allowed him to swing his phpBB board over to SMF without having to redo all his user accounts, etc.  Is this true, and if so where do I get my grubby hands on it?
  • I tried loading a couple of packages last night and immediately encountered some issues, specific to the SMF Arcade.  Once loaded the board errored out, and it appears the Arcade package over-wrote the index.php file and the board showed reverted to 1.02 (I think).  Anyway, the question is, do the 'upgrades' listed in the available packages not work with this version?  I saw several that I'd like to attempt, but don't want to have to go through what I did last night.

There's the converter from phpBB in the downloads page.
http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php?converters

About the mod trouble, you should ask in the mod's topic, the author or other users of that mod, will help you, the answer may already be there even. HTH.
