Title: A little help Upgrading from 1.1.21 to 2.0.10
Post by: Topman on May 14, 2015, 04:51:28 AM
OK,
I have transferred the files for the upgrade.
I have started the upgrade tool upgrade.php and re entered my database settings and password.

But I get this message:
"Critical Error!
The upgrade script cannot find script.js or it is out of date. Make sure your theme paths are correct. You can download a setting checker tool from the Simple Machines Website"

I have tried re using the repair_settings.php but it does not appear to have an apply button.
It said the Cache directory was not found so I clicked on the recommended one.

Nothing has changed.  Any ideas?

Also this under the attachment directory entry
"Notice: Undefined index: database_error in /homepages/21/d424618090/htdocs/forum.brand-newhomes.co.uk/Sources/Subs-Db-mysql.php on line 594

I have just upgraded maybe i can help.

Have you checked your theme paths? Did you change the folder name or want to upgrade in a different folder?

What I have done is moved my 1.1.21 version files into a sub domain, set up a working re direct to the new URL, and I changed all the paths and settings in repair_settings.php and it all worked fine as it should with 1.1.21.
Then today I imported the upgrade files for 2.0.10 and as I said previously this is where I am at.

I use a default theme and the script.js file is in there.
I am a bit confused why the repair settngs.php is different with no "apply" or "set" button.

Sitting here so helpless - waiting for a reply.
No forum at all -  I cant even get my 1.1.21 version to work on the original URL as a temporary measure.
Feeling very down at the moment almost in tears to be honest!
I have spent two weeks on this off and on already.
It is a forum with which I help others (a bit like here) so I am wondering if I should give up altogether on the 2.0.10 upgrade.
What's the point?  I only wanted it to be current and uptodate.

Why so many problems.

Is there any help out there.
Where is the apply button gone from repair_settings.
How to you change anything?

QuoteSitting here so helpless
May just be some tiny error (or path error) somewhere, but these small things may take time to find. Also went from 1xx to 2xx some time ago, had no problems, so it's definitely possible and it works. Staying on 1xx is not an option IMO. Courage and good luck !

Its not luck I need - its a bit of help!
25 users on here now and not one able to help?
You must have been one of the lucky ones.
I am currently transferring the old 1.1.21 files back after deleting the upgrade to try and get something to work!
yet another morning wasted with SMF!

As for 1.1.21 a lot of Mod packages I like and use don't seen to be listed for 2.0.10.
Not sure they would work after upgrade even if I could get it to work.

But what configuration?
And why is there  not a "settings" "save" or "apply" button on repair_settings.php when upgrading to 2.0.10 but there is when using 1.1.21?

is your settings.php file writable? if it is not then that button will not show up.

is there not a warning on the repair_settings.php page that tells you Settings.php is not writable?

I had a look in FTP and it seems the settings.php permissions are as follows:
Owner: Read Write
Group:  -
Public: Read

I have changed them so they are all write checked as well and will have another go.
I also noticed the setting_bak.php file was missing too.

Thanks Illori.

I am at 35 minutes and it is still not completed.
Says 14% with 0.4% step progress and
"Executing database changes
Please be patient - this may take some time on large forums. The time elapsed increments from the server to show progress is being made!
Executing upgrade script 1 of 2.
Executing: "Updating and creating indexes..." (1 of 19 - of this script)"

Then after a  while it says:
"!!Error!
Unknown Error!"
I seem to be stuck there!

OK thats 45 minutes and it is still going no where!   I get the above RED on the upgrade and the same fatal error using the repair_settings/php

All the permissions for both settings.php and settings_bak.php are all "checked" and set to 777.

OK I tried again and re imported my database to a new location.
This is the screen shot I get when using Repair_settings.php in 1.1.21.
This is before I try to upgrade.
The forum works alright in 1.1.21 despite this.

So what should I try now?
Anyone?

Oh while I am waiting I will transfer the upgrade files yet again and see if it makes any difference.
I'm not holding out much hope!  Another three hours wasted on this today!
Close to giving up altogether with the upgrade unless someone can offer some insight into what is going wrong!

ok, try this...

delete everything except Settings.php, Settings_bak.php, the avatars directory and the attachments directory
(so, delete Sources, delete Themes, etc)
then upload the upgrade archive and extract
(so you are adding files, not attempting to overwrite)
then try running the upgrade.

Do you mean delete just (only the files) included in the 1.1.21 to 2.10 upgrade except the Avatars and attachments directories?
Ok doing this now.

No same ol same ol

In repair_settings I get this:
Attachment Directory:
Notice: Undefined index: database_error in /homepages/21/d424618090/htdocs/brand-newhomes.co.uk/forum/smf/Sources/Subs-Db-mysql.php on line 594

and no button either.
And the big red
"Thank you for choosing to upgrade to SMF 2.0.10. All files appear to be in place, and we're ready to proceed."

"!!Critical Error!
The upgrade script cannot find script.js or it is out of date. Make sure your theme paths are correct. You can download a setting checker tool from the Simple Machines Website"

If you agree, you can PM me your details.

just make sure that the site which you want me to upgrade is running 1.1.x correctly and I will get you done tonight.

Hi Kindred,
Thanks again for your help.
The database has been copied to the webspace.

When having trouble importing my database, my Host 1and1 did say that the database had an error but it now seems to work in 1.1.21.

QuoteERROR 1062 (23000) at line 57: Duplicate entry '1' for key 'PRIMARY'
Please optimize your database and if possible import it to an empty database. What the problem is you have the same name of the primary key on the table of your database  and the one you are trying to import.

In the end I have imported the database you have access to, to a new and empty database.

Hi Kindred,

You are obviously busy and I would like to know what exactly the problem with the database is anyway from a learning point of view.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to take me through it step by step or at least point me in the right direction without getting too technical.

Post by: margarett on May 25, 2015, 04:11:31 AM
I just fixed a similar error the other day. That happens because
a) you removed default theme's folder in 1.1.x
Or/and
b) your theme with ID 1 isn't default

This prevents the upgrade tool to find the correct files because it uses the existing location of default theme...

Thanks,
I will give it a go again another day.
I think it may be the first suggestion. I seem to remember doing that.

Now you need to hammer the upgrade tool, as trying to fix it in 1.1 it's too much hassle.

I'll try to find the hack I pulled and post it here ;)
Title: Re: A little help Upgrading from 1.1.21 to 2.0.10
Post by: margarett on May 25, 2015, 07:37:03 AM
OK, here it is.

Open upgrade.php, (in function loadEssentialData):
Find:
global $modSettings, $sourcedir, $smcFunc, $upcontext;
Replace with:
global $modSettings, $sourcedir, $smcFunc, $upcontext, $boarddir, $boardurl;

Find:
// If they don't have the file, they're going to get a warning anyway so we won't need to clean request vars.
Add before:
//Lets overwrite the theme data because it can be wrong...
if (!isset($modSettings['theme_dir']) || (isset($modSettings['theme_dir']) && !file_exists($modSettings['theme_dir'] . '/languages/Install.' . $upcontext['language'] . '.php'))) //Wrong themes dir. Duh!
{
$modSettings['theme_dir'] = $boarddir . '/Themes/default';
$modSettings['images_url'] = $boardurl . 'Themes/default/images';
$modSettings['theme_url'] = $boardurl . 'Themes/default';
}

This will allow you to run the upgrade tool without problems. Nevertheless, the paths will STILL be wrong in the database. So, when you finish the upgrade, you need to load and run repair_settings to properly fix the paths, before you can use 2.0 ;)

Thanks Margarett.
I thought all I would need to do is start again with a copy set of the of the 1.1.21 files and an unaffected copy of the database and try again.
Do I need to use the hack anyway/as well?

Title: Re: A little help Upgrading from 1.1.21 to 2.0.10
Post by: Kindred on May 26, 2015, 07:51:06 AM
you are looking at the structure.... you need to be looking at the DATA in the settings table.

search for anything with the old PATH and then the old URL and update it...

and try margarett's suggestion as well to update the code in upgrade.php

basically, your system is STILL using some of the old location data (repair_settings.php does not seem to fully work on your system).
Title: Re: A little help Upgrading from 1.1.21 to 2.0.10
Post by: margarett on May 26, 2015, 08:20:34 AM
It does work on his system. But default folder isn't there so it simply fixes the folders that *are* there ;)
Title: Re: A little help Upgrading from 1.1.21 to 2.0.10
Post by: Kindred on May 26, 2015, 08:43:14 AM
Actually, I can confirm that it does not fully work on his system... the script fails/cuts off/aborts about halfway through the list of directories/urls to list.
(and the default theme folder is PRESENT on the server, although it may be changed or missing in the database)
Title: Re: A little help Upgrading from 1.1.21 to 2.0.10
Post by: margarett on May 26, 2015, 09:10:05 AM
Yeah, I've seen that happening before. I assume that it's because the 2.0 files are already in place, whereas the database is still 1.1.x (at least that was always the case when I saw that happening).
If that is the case, then the "default" folder that you have is already 2.0's default theme. The problem is that the "themes" table has no record of a "default" theme folder, so it doesn't look for it and that causes the error of the missing files.
Title: Re: A little help Upgrading from 1.1.21 to 2.0.10
Post by: Kindred on May 26, 2015, 09:58:58 AM
right-oh...

So, topman -- you need to do two things  -- basically what I said and what maragett said.

Make sure all of the paths and urls in your database smf_settings table are pointing to the NEW location
AND make the edits that margarett said to upgrade.php

Once it is installed, as well, you are probably going to want to FORCE all users to be set the the default theme

(and, in the future, never, ever, delete the default theme directory or remove the default theme from the theme list)

i believe without modifying the databse it is not possible to delete the default theme from the theme list.

That's the spirit :P But I've seen *several* 1.1.x setups with no default theme folder, or without a theme with ID = 1.
How? Who knows? ;D

The important is that we now know why it happens :)

Right, this is what I am going to try!
I have deleted all the files on the old URL /forum/smf
I have uploaded (being done now) all the 1.1.19 files from my working forum before I tried all this.
I have uploaded a copy of my database (a working one before the changes) to a new location.
I will use repair settings to point to  the new database location.
I will disable uninstal Pretty Urls (I believe this is the source of the problem.
I will upload the Upgrade files for 2.0.10
I will use the hack Margarett suggested to upgrade.php
Then I will try the upgrade.

This will be the old URL so paths should work.
It will be the old 1.1.19 files so the upgrade should work.
I will report back either way!

Phase 1 completed.
Forum is working using 1.1.19 old URL and copied database in new location.

I did get this error message when using Repair_settings:

Now I've transfered the 2.0.10 upgrade files to the webspace and change the upgrade.php fril with the hack suggested.
In forum/smf/upgrade.php  I get the same "Critical error" message

Critical Error!
The upgrade script cannot find script.js or it is out of date. Make sure your theme paths are correct. You can download a setting checker tool from the Simple Machines Website

Trying the upgrade now:

Thanks for the offer. But debug what?
The "Critical error"  is the script.js file which is there in Default theme!  (see attached!)

Or are you saying all my copies of the database have a bug or something preventing the upgrade to 2.0.10?

I cannot (dont want to) give you access to myphp admin with 1and1 as it also gives access to all my other mysql databases.
I may be able (4mb zip file) to e mail the database to you if you PM your  e mail address!

Yes :) The lack of a default theme entry in the database makes it go wild. And maybe my fix isn't complete enough (I used a slight variation 2 weeks ago to fix *THAT* exact problem, but I didn't save it :( )
That's what I would like to debug...

It seems strange (at least to me) that my whole forum works perfectly well in 1.1.21 with the same database.
I use a default theme with the colours changed and a few tweeks of index.php

By the time this gets resolved I will need to upgrade to 2.1!

You use **A** default theme, but apparently not THE default theme... and that is what is causing your problems. I could probably fix it for you in under 30 mins...if you would give me access to your candle and phpmyadmin... I understand why you are hesitant to do so, but there is only so much we can try to do by explanation.....

OK I'll give it a try using an "original" 1.1.19 default theme file and try the upgrade.
(Nope didnt work either!)

I will also look to see if it is possible to set  up a new myphpadmin account and put a copy of my database in it.

You use **A** default theme, but apparently not THE default theme... and that is what is causing your problems. I could probably fix it for you in under 30 mins...if you would give me access to your candle and phpmyadmin... I understand why you are hesitant to do so, but there is only so much we can try to do by explanation.....

How about this, if your kind offer still stands.
I give you a temporary password and ftp access to a URL witht he forum files in it, which will include the database .sql file.
You can then create a mySQL account add the database and use your own phpadmin to edit it, putting the corrected database back in the webspace.

Anyone else!

I uninstalled Pretty URLS in my working forum.
I have uplaoded a working set iof 1.1.21 files to a new URL
I have copied a working database and uploaded it to a new mySQL account.

Everything works PERFECTLY in 1.1.21.
I then transfered the 2.0.10 upgrade files and try the upgrade and get the same Critical Error.

Critical Error!
The upgrade script cannot find script.js or it is out of date. Make sure your theme paths are correct. You can download a setting checker tool from the Simple Machines Website

A MONTH and I am no further on!

Send me that access to your database. I don't need any files.

Is it possible to just give you the
Database name
Database host
Database Username
Database Password

Because with 1and1 all I do for phpadmin is click a link and it opens.
And I cant give anyone my 1and1 control panel password.
I could e mail you a copy and you could uplaod it to your phpadmin perhaps?

Please let me know is there is a way to do this.

Yes, that is what I was suggesting ;) If you provide me your database dump alone I can do it in my computer.

I don't believe you can send a database dump via email (unless it's quite small...)
Zip it using a strong password, then upload it to any file sharing service out there. Then PM me the link and the password ;)

Thanks Bruno.
My forum is now running on 2.09 but............ some of the posts (mine) are empty!

They are listed in the totals but nothing is in them!
Also attachments missing so I am re loading the old attachment file.

I will need to do a bit of code changing to gett he layout etc the same.
Can I import the 1.1.21 css and index php files or do I have to recode them?

Looks like all the packages need to be re done buy I don't mind I was expecting that.

Thank you for your help.

Why 2.0.9??!!

Try with 2.0.10, it includes w fix for a (probably,  it certain) known problem.

For some reason, I cannot download SMF forum files from the website.
I can download packages - go figure!
So I asked a mate to download them for me on his PC and e mail them as attachments.
The latest at the time was 2.0.09  - yes I have been trying to upgrade for that long!
So I thought I could use 2.09 then upgrade that through the Admin on the forum which always worked for 1.1.18 etc.
It is my fits job today.

Thanks again Bruno/Margarett for your kind help with this. and mending my database so it can upgrade,.

Oh dear!
I left the settings.php files in the test forum over the weekend!
I hadn't added my spam question filter mods to it.
This morning I noticed I have 22 new members" who have made 1200 posts in around 40 hours!

Why do they do this?
What do they possibly hope to gain?

Luckily for me I can just re upload the database and delete the current one.
My first job afater that will be to download spam filter mods!

:P

Spam is easy, automated and extremely cheap. If they get a single click for every 1000 posts created by bots, it's still a much better and cheaper result than "normal" advertising methods.

It's like the plague, really...

I am not sure what 2.0.10 was going to do but the content in the posts was still missing, although any photos were there.
I have just spent half an hour going through the 10 pages of recent posts (100 posts) and have had to cut and paste about 11% that were missing.

The problem is without checking every single topic all 768 of them!  I wont know how many of my 1901 posts have written content missing.

Is there a way of increasing the number of recent posts pages/post displayed?
Is there a way of listing posts with no content?
Is there any way of listing posts with no content?

Can you link one of these posts with no content? And maybe check how they are stored in the database?

Anyway, 2.0.10 contains a patch which allows utf8mb4 characters to be displayed. I thought that this might be the problem, apparently it isn't...
It's strange that a post from 1.1.21 isn't displayed in 2.0.10, really is...
Maybe this?

Here is a link to one of the missing posts on the working 1.1.21 forum.
(I am keeping my 2.0.10 test version in maintenance mode whilst I sort out everything)

http://forum.brand-newhomes.co.uk/bovis-homes/bovis-homes-profits-up-69-per-cent-in-2014/msg2074/#msg2074

I don't think I have it set to UTF8 characters (or at least I havent set it to that unless is as originally)
but the existing 1.1.21 forum is.
As I said, I used 2.0.9 then upgraded to 2.0.10 so perhaps this should have sorted it.

Still would like to know if there is anyway I can quickly check all posts have content.

because you are using £ you need to convert to utf-8. try that on your 2.0 forum and it should fix the problem for all posts/topics. this is the same as the link margarett provided in the last reply.

Upadte fro others reading this:
I re uploaded the 2.09 files to my URL webspace
Copied the database that Margarett kindly adapted for me to a new MySQL database number.

Used repair_settings.php for the new database
Save settings
Then revised the paths etc and saved settings.
Deleted the repair_settings.php file.

I then updated to 2.0.10 version.
I then added the MultiQA mod to stop spammers  - Yes do this early or you will be plagued!
I then set the forum to UFT8 characters.
I found that all the posts missing content was now back.
So finally all I needed to use search " £ "  to find all the post containing the rogue  and delete it.

So I have got there in the end. Its been a big journey.
I hope your upgrade goes much much more smoothly!

you know...   questions are a standard feature in 2.0.x -- no need for the "multiQA mod" :)

I am very happy to see that your forum was finally able to upgrade.
