I use SMF 2.0 RC3.
I use "Forgot your password" and then click my email. it didn't send a password reset to my email.
I also tried with the username and it doesn't send anything to mail. I tested few mails / few usernames. nothing works.
How to fix?
Thanks.
Did you first check to see if your server even sends out emails at all?
How can I check if my server sends out emails ?
send an PM to yourself, you should receive an email to tell you've received an PM
Ok I have chcked. The forum doesn't send any emails to any members.
How to fix it?
Do you use php-mail or SMTP-mail ?
What the defferent?
php-mail is send via your webhosting provider, SMTP-mail is send via your internet provider or something like gmail.
I use @hotmail.com
is it PHP-mail?
Goto Admin - Maintenance - Mail - Settings and have a look what your forum settings for email are.
The Settings are:
Mail Type - PHP Default
SMTP Server - blank
SMTP Port - 25
SMTP username : my admin in forum
SMTP Password : my admin in forum password
Remove your username and password from the smtp settings and see if that helps.
If I remove the username and password from the smtp settings, they will be auto written.
Username : Admin Name
Password : *********
It's just auto add it if i remove them.
It does? Hmm, okay.
In Admin -> Forum Maintenance, are there any errors? If so, please post them back here.
With this settings:
Mail Type - PHP Default
SMTP Server - blank
SMTP Port - 25
SMTP username : my admin in forum
SMTP Password : my admin in forum password
I got this error :
Unable to send mail to the email address '
[email protected]'
I meant in your forum error log. You can find it in Admin -> Forum Maintenance -> Errorlog. ;)
It's from the error log :

Ah, that doesn't tell much, unfortunately. Can you post a phpinfo? What is phpinfo.php? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=18250.0)
Also, you could try changing the mailsettings to smtp and use the login and serverdetails for your hotmailaccount.
1. The phpinfo : http://magicpt.ma.funpic.de/phpinfo.php
2. What I need to put in the SMTP Server , SMTP Port ?

You might want to contact your host about having problems with sendmail. Setting smtp is just a workaround.

I don't know for a hotmail account. Basically, it's the same settings you'd use for an emailclient like Outlook. There should be some info about these settings when loggin in to hotmail.
I just found out ports 25 and 587 are blocked by my ISP. Quess that was the problem?
Bump
Contact your host about the sendmail. I don't think there's very much we can do about it.
If you're host blocked the mailfunctionality I think it is time to have a look for another host :s
I just went to other SMF forum and i checked the forgot password function.
i got email from :
[email protected]I need setup a email with noreply or what?
No, but the webmasters email in Admin -> Configuration -> Server Settings should be a valid one. Can you check that?
it's a vaild one.
That's how i configured my Mail Settings:
Enable Mail Queue - enabled
Maximum emails to send per minute - 0
Maximum amount of emails to send per page load - 0
Mail Type - SMTP
SMTP Server - smtp.live.com
SMTP Port - 25
SMTP Username - my hotmail username
SMTP Password - my hotmail password
Is it right?
Anyway it doesn't work still. I don't have an idea what to do
I'm not sure. You might want to try port 587 then. You don't have another emailaccount to try?
Port 587 doesn't work as well.
I will try other accounts and update here
Other accounts dont work too. I tested many options and nothing seems to work. what to do?
also can some1 with SMF forum show me his mail settings?
Anyone?
Bump
Your ISP(internet service provider) is blocking the ports, or your webhost is? If your webhost is, have you tried asking them to unblock them? If so and they refuse to unblock them, then I would suggest switching webhosts.
You can find webhost reviews here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=4.0
I have talked with the webhost and they told us that SMTP won't work but PHP will work.
We setted the mail settings under PHP Default.
The change now is we don't see errors about mail sending in the error log, But still the mail aren't sending.
The wierd thing is: when we configure the password in the mail settings, it doesn't save it. Maybe it's a bug of SMF 2.0 RC3.
So maybe because of this bug the mail sending doesn't work.
What kind of email are you using with the PHP? Your @hotmail.com won't work, it has to be at yourdomain.com to work.
I tried hotmail.com and live.com.
We don't have domain mail yet
Can't you use the mailaddress provided by your isp?
Do you not have webmail with your host??
This is the email address you should be using
EG
[email protected]
We used till now only hotmail.com and live.com and both of them dont work.
Our webhost didn't provide us a mail.
That is the reason why the mail system didn't work?
Yep, with those type, you have to use SMTP settings. If your host provides you one, then you should be able to just use PHP.
