Title: Similar Topics
Post by: Bugo on November 04, 2012, 02:07:37 PM
Link to the mod (https://custom.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=3473)

This mod displays a list of similar topics at the bottom of the current topic page and when creating a new topic.

This mod needs MySQL 5.6 or greater. Tested on MariaDB 10.6+ and PostgreSQL 9.6+.

To change settings, go to Admin -> Modification Settings -> Similar Topics.

Working out of the box, very interesting!

One question: apart from setting the permissions in the mod's options, do we need to check anything else, permission-wise?
Title: Re: Similar Topics
Post by: Bugo on November 05, 2012, 07:49:05 AM
Yeah, there are 2 permissions for every group:
1) Viewing of similar topics list
2) Viewing of similar topics list when creating new topic

Yes, I saw that :) What I meant was, that's the only two things I need to check, right? Because other mods have permissions options in the mod preferences but you also need to go to the permissions section in Admin...

Thanks - I wasn't aware of that. Maybe you could highlight the fact that these new permissions exist and that they aren't set by default?

Mod looks (and behaves) superbly, cheers.

These permissions also available on mod's settings page (if it's not convenient for someone to go the permission section) :)

I can not find the seting area at modification center of admin's page. I installed by manuel. Now I can not see nothing any similar topic? Permission area has not similar topic setting. Is there a problem with related topics?

So they are. Sorry.

The "Ignored Boards" is actually showing stuff from my Recycle Bin, despite me ticking the box to hide that board. It won't be showing for regular members I guess, as it's in my Admin section.

Any topics from the Recycle Bin will be visible only to those who have access to this board.

Hi Bugo,

I installed the mod and yet the feature where to show similar topics when creating new topic is not working correct. it just shows "Loading..."

is it suppose to show similar topics while writing new topic subject?
Title: Re: Similar Topics

Did you try to type any subject and then put cursor into message field?
Title: Re: Similar Topics

yes I did type a subject with common words that I know for sure it should work with. then I put some content just for testing, then tried to preview the topic, still nothing loading!

Probably it's a jQuery conflict, with other scripts. Can you give me a test account on your forum?

Great mod. I have been searching for such mod since my childhood ;). just two questions:
1- How to force the similar topics to open in new tabs of the browsers?
2- Is there a way to force the similar topics appear without clicking outside of the subject box?
Title: Re: Similar Topics
Post by: Bugo on November 13, 2012, 07:55:47 PM
1. If your mouse has a middle button, just use it for open any links in new tabs :)
2. Open /Themes/default/scripts/simtopics.js, find:
$("input[name=\"subject\"]").live("change", function(){
and replace with:
$("input[name=\"subject\"]").live("keyup", function(){
Then clean a browser's cache.

I have been testing the mod for the last two days and I've come across the following problem:
The similar topics shown at the bottom of the topics page is precise and correct, but the similar topics shown at the time of creating a new topic isn't precise. Sometimes even the results is completely irrelevant (Unfortunately, my forum is in Persian, so I can't provide you with some screen shots).
So, is there a way to apply the showing method of the similar topics of the first case to the second case, too?

I am liking this mod... even though I only use half of it (the new topic part doesn't appear on my modified Curve theme)... but I would really love to move the Similar Topics block up above the Quick Reply.   Currently the only options are above the post or below the quick reply.  Is there any chance I could get some help moving this block to between the post and the quick reply?  Thank you.

Hey!
I really like this plugin, but since I'm using this editor (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=485483.0) does not work since then. (I guess because of the conflict jquery)

Is there any way to eliminate this error?
Prints to loading, but nothing happens...
Thank you!

the faulty plugin is not working because of the "nice tooltips (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2115)"

Unfortunately, despite removed, I think only a complete re-install solves the problem

Great idea and congratulations for your work. My 2 cents would be to display relevant titles when user is typing in subject area (like live search) and not display them after user has clicked away from subject area. And of course, open the similar topics in new window, so that user will not have to start again a topic.

Another idea is to make both options graphically more compact so that they blend in with the site and have an option to display similar topics when typing on subject only (now as an option is the opposite, display only below post as similar topics and do not display on subject).

Hi Bugo, i have a couple errors in log section.

simtopics.php in line: 67

Database error:
You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to
your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 's%'
OR m.subject LIKE '%Creed%' OR m.subject LIKE '%3%' OR m.subject LIKE '%Libe' at line 11

what should i do ?

I've noticed this when an apostrophe is used in the topic title - it upsets the DB query string. I can live with the errors - they don't occur that often...

Good. Open simtopics.php (in the root of your forum), find
$where .= ($k == 1 ? "" : " OR ") . "m.subject LIKE '%" . $query[$i] . "%'";
and replace with:
$where .= ($k == 1 ? "" : " OR ") . "m.subject LIKE '%" . mysql_real_escape_string($query[$i]) . "%'";

yes I did type a subject with common words that I know for sure it should work with. then I put some content just for testing, then tried to preview the topic, still nothing loading!
Probably it's a jQuery conflict, with other scripts. Can you give me a test account on your forum?

Hi Bugo,

I sent you a testing account on PM. I don't know if you had a chance to check my problem?

by the way, I installed the new version already and the same issue still exist!

I think it's a jQuery conflict. There's a code in your code:

Try remove it.

Since I installed the new version I notice my Recycle Board is being pulled into the search/display, despite the code saying this

if (!empty($modSettings['recycle_board']))
$ignore_boards[] = $modSettings['recycle_board'];

Interestingly, my Recycle Board doesn't appear in the list of boards to ignore now :(

Hey AJ

Looking at the last modified time of the official mod download I'd say the replacement file in reply #80 is not included.

And yes, you'll need to uninstall your existing version.

My problem above is still open. Bugo, could you please provide me with a solution to this problem?

Nope, PGSQL does not support the features. To use this mod you'll need to switch to MySQL.

The mod's author ideally should add a tagline that this requires MySQL.

Hi,

I'm very interested in this mod and I'm currently trying it. But I'm facing some issues that I'm wondering if they could be overcome. First, I'm reaching 500,000 posts in my forum, so I'm using a Sphinx index for the searches instead of the default MySQL indexes. So my fist question, or request, is to be able to use Sphinx in order to minimize the impact of this mod in my database.

Also, I've found that most of the time old posts are shown instead of other much more recent. They are "related", yes, but I'm also wondering if you could somehow change the weight of different search criteria such as if the search words are included in the title, number of posts in a thread, date and so on.

It's an amazing mod; but I'm missing some important features in order to be able to actually use it.

Thanks so much for reading.

Bests,

Yes, I am on a similar boat with a forum of over 500,000 posts and I am guessing that this mod would slowly it down big time and this is the last thing I want.

By the way, how did you install Sphinx? I am trying to find someone who could do it for me.

I've just disable Similar Topics and I'm trying to reinstall Sphinx. I'll let you know if manage to get it running back.

1) My forum language is spanish, so we use áéíóú etc, in topic display there is no problem, but when I start a new topic I get "null" on those topics using special chars.

Attached you can find an image.

2) Is it possible to order similar topics from date and descending?

(1) Bugo isn't making any money off this mod.

(2) Bugo made this mod and contributed it voluntarily.

(3) Bugo has no obligation to help anyone.  You.  Me.  Anyone.  He has no obligation to even release mods.  He does so voluntarily out of kindness and the love for the community.

(4) It's bad attitudes like yours that drive people away from making free mods.  If you paid for it,  I would be on your side.  You didn't.  You got it free.  If it doesn't work and you find the support lacking.  DO NOT USE THE MOD.  Simple as that.

I think there are some language issues going on here.  Bugo is Russian (IIRC)... I am not sure what your native tongue is.

Bottom line is that it's not cool to attack someone who's contributing to the community freely and without out strings.    If you paid for a service,  I could understand your anger.  You didn't.   You got something for free.  If it doesn't work for you... and when you ask for help you get little or none... your options are limited to fixing the issue yourself,  hiring someone else to fix the issues,  or remove the mod.

There is no shame in offering up some money for help with an issue you can't get resolved through the free channels.

I challenge no money for this mod. And I can't get a word out of someone who has any problems. To make inquiries about a problem, one should write at least the following:
1) All details about problem (what, where, when etc., Error Log etc.)
2) Test account on your forum.
Title: Re: Similar Topics

@FrizzleFried

For last time i say again:

I didn't make him or anybody to help me for solve this issue, never.
i just requested help like all people, without discontent (please see my prev posts!)
after many days, i asked question: no one to support?
i means all members, not only bugo.
and when he replied, i saw a tough reply! no language and money ant etc is our matter! it's was clear what he said, it dosen't matter, but don't forget, he never, and shouldn't speak to people like this, if couldn't help and dosen't want to help, okay, no problem, don't reply!

if someone didn't know whats he need to fix the problem, he shouldn't act like this, should speak with politeness, and let us know whats will need.

i've help people here sometimes, if i can. like others, shouldn't have money expectation!

he helped others befor, but the funny matter is when i request help he refused!
nevermind!

i believe, when someone create something, should handle this! THIS IN NOT FORCING HIM TO HELP!

end of the story
Title: Re: Similar Topics

I think i am just going to chalk this up to a language barrier...  I think Mr. Pedram is taking something Bugo said a little too literal/serious but again,  I think it's a language thing... on one or both.

Anyway,  if you want the support you're looking for Bugo,  it seems,  would still be happy to help out if you provided the two bits of info he asks for in his last response above.

Good luck.

I can confirm that this mod and the 'Glossary' mod have a conflict with one another. I have disabled the glossary at the moment as no one seems to use it anyway.

This is for info in case someone gets the permanent '....loading' situation and they also have the glossary installed.

Nope I'm using the original Bugo, but as it has been installed for a long time I thought it worth telling others that the two are not compatible...your mod works perfectly so there is nothing wrong with that and the glossary works OK too but the two will not work together.

Maybe that could be a project for someone to update the glossary :)

The 'Glossary' is an aditional mod that can be downloaded and installed via the 'Modifications' section here http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1525

It is not a part of any standard SMF installation and you would not want it unless you felt you had a need for it.

If you haven't installed it then you will not have any problem with the 'Similar Topics' mod.

I was only bringing it to peoples attention to avoid the possible conflict.

To help rule out some of the questions of compatability below are the mods I have on my site and the 'Similar Topics' works correctly:

Great mod! Any way I can move the 'similar topic' results above the 'Page 1' link in the Display.template.php? I would like to have it right below the actual message.

I had to turn off the feature for using it during new topic creation, as it was flashing and flickering as it updated while i typed the subject, I think it looked really unprofessional.

17.   Bad Behavior mod   1.5.17
18.   Downloads System   2.0a

Hi Bugo,

I'm also having the 'loading' issue with the mod.

I am using the Firox multicolor theme, but can't find this line of code in my index.template.php.

Do you have any idea why it might not be working for me please?

I do have quite a lot of custom mods installed, so perhaps there are some jquery conflicts somewhere.

Thanks

Hello Bugo!

Your mods are great!
But I have same problem with Similar Topics as above.
I can see similar ones when creating new topic, but nothing is seen below "quick reply" on a topic page.
My existing forum uses only 4 mods:
Similar Topics
Optimus Brave
WYSIWYGQuickReply
SimpleAds

I also thought about jquery problem, but then I installed fresh smf 2.0.5 on denwer, installer russian utf-8 language and Similar Topics.
Then I started to create topics "Test 1", "Test 2", "Test 3"...
Nothing. I can see them while creating, but nothing below "quick reply" field.

Then I created search indexes (I thought it could make problem, no indexes), but still nothing.
So, again, fresh SMF 2.0.5 with Curve, only Similar Topics installed.
Topics can be seen on creating new topic page, but not below "quick reply" page.

Will appreciate any ideas.

P.s. Tried Firefox, Chrome, IE on Win 7.

I did it on local wamp, not on production site yet.
But it worked here, so should work there too.

Don't worry guys, I will translate. I think it can solve problems of many people here.
QuoteClear cache and try to change cache interval to 0 (means in mod's settings). Then create some topics with similar titles again. Does it work if switch to "above topic" display?

I did not switch to "above topic", but this Bugo's instruction helped on local wamp server.

I opened a thread in SMF 2.x support board, http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=513234, for the following error and it looks like that the database version error can be ignored as posted by the SMF devs. And I think similar topic mod was throwing this error and thought of posting it here. Thanks.

QuoteSo I tried to add a new membergroup and got this error.

QuoteDatabase Error

Note: It appears that your database may require an upgrade. Your forum's files are currently at version SMF 2.0.6, while your database is at version 2.0.4. The above error might possibly go away if you execute the latest version of upgrade.php.

I am seeing a problem. it isn't looking though the thread titles correctly. Example:

2 threads with similar titles = the 1st two words of the title are the same but the rest is different. I go into one of those threads, but it doesn't show the other one under similar topics.

It appears to be looking for the words in a random order and only looking for individual words. Having it look from left to right would be the solution. It would also be helpfu if it looks for the entire title first - possibly.

Another issue I found: When creating a new thread, I tried a word that was the first word in several topics and it didn't show any of those. It shows 5 that are unrelated.

What do I need to do to fix this? Thanks.

I want to use this for 2.1... and as an encouraging side note to the author, I'm guessing that it's only going to take just minor tweaking to be 100% with 2.1, just attempted to install on 2.1 production site and the pre-test had 0 errors! Unusual for this point in the transition process... Watching the logs for a minute reveals only one error thus far, though it is a show stopper should be easy to fix...

error= "The callable simtopics_actions could not be called."  I get this on another module too and I'll track down the author on that too later... heads up man you could be ahead of the competition a bit by fixing this asap

[edit]
Duh, just looked again, the reason there's no errors is that there is very little editing happening... open mouth insert foot yet again... never the less, only one minor little glitch is still VERY cool

I have the same problem as ScrumpyJack, it doesn't load in my themed forum, with v2.0.13 version and Anecdota Theme.

I neither can find that line of code, and after clear the cache and follow all Bugo's instructions, still doesn't appears the Similar Topics block anywhere, so after reading others with the same problem and no solution, i'm guessing is realted with the Theme we're using.

I've had the same load problem with a similar Mod, so it can assure me the issue is related with our Theme, and as i can't change theme after the long modding work unfortunately i will have to dessist to use this feature. It's a big shame because Bugo's Mod is awesome, and install perfectly, so maybe in based default themes.

Thanks anyway for your work with this great feature Bugo... Regards

Just installed this mod on my ver 2.0.15 board, and it works fine as intended. I can see the list of similar topics under the message page. However some strange issues for Bugo's attention. The mod is actually working ok in my board; just need to workaround the issues below.

1) The permission settings within the Mod's Configure Page (ie under Admin > Configuration > Similar Topics) do not work. I can change the settings to "Allow", save the changes.. and the mod is still not switched on for the membergroup.

When I go into the Membergroup's Permission page, under the section "Similar Topics", I noticed both permission items are still set to "Disallow". If I now make the changes - in Membergroup Permission - for these two items to "Allow", ah.. the mod is now switched on for this membergroup and I can see the list of similar topics underneath the message.

so this seems to indicate updating permissions from the Mod Config Page is not working on my board. The workaround is to use the Membergroup Permission page itself to do this.

2) Now a strange issue. After making the changes via Membergroup Permission page (above) and getting the mod to work, if I look at the Mod Config Page, the permissions for the updated membergroups are strangely changed to "Disallow" (X). But the mod is working (ie showing the list of similar topics) for these membergroups. It's just the page showing "X" instead of "A".

See attached file - Config Page Perm
- I've just updated both Similar Topics permission items for these two group (Regular Members, BGC Members) via Membergroup Permission to "Allow", save the changes and in the Mod Config Page, they are marked as "X". The mod is working for these two membergroups so that tells me the permission settings are correct but somehow not displaying correctly in the Mod Config Page?
- note Guests is left as default "X"; didn't make any change to this membergroup since installing this mod

3) The last issue is regarding the list of two new permission items under Membergroup Permission page
- see attached screenshot "MemberGroup Perm"
- you can see under the section "Similar Topics", there are two permission line items but with empty description? I presume they are "Permission to view" and "Access to list on new post" but somehow my board lost the description
- they still work.. I can set them to Allow (or Disallow) and the mod works accordingly

If Bugo is still active here and wants to look closer at the issues, I can arrange test acct and access etc.

I am testing it on Sphinx on a big board (0,5 m. topics) and it seems to have trouble to get the right topic titles. I.e. i may try a topic title that exists, but it will not be displayed (unless it is getting its data from the old full text search index). Any ideas about that?

What are the determining factors for this mod to find "similar" topics? Does it search titles, subject matter content? I started using it and it seems it kind of randomly picks anything and not necessarily similar at all.

I've had this mod install on 2.1.1 but just tried to install the latest download (1.2) and it says "This mod needs MySQL 7.2 or greater. You will not be able to install/use this mod, contact your host and ask for a database engine upgrade." but I have MySQL7.4. Currently getting a 500 error page and am chatting with my host to reset permission for the 2nd time.

Not sure what's causing it because I had it installed, was just trying to upgrade the mod.

Can you check it please?

Edit: I'm retarded! The new version of this mod requires MySQL 7.2 I have 5.6 and PHP 7.4 I got them confused. So I can't use the latest version I can only use the 1.1.3 version! :'(  :o

Installed and working fantastically.  However I do get this error when i visit the admin page for the mod... (not a huge deal frankly but figured I might want to see if I can fix it)...

Had this working fine on SMF 2.1 RC4.

Upgraded to SMF 2.1.1 today. Reinstalled my mods... when I got to this one, it passes the test but then when I go to install I get the error:

Database Error
Duplicate entry '' for key '*UNKNOWN*'
File: /home/xxxxxxx/public_html/xxxxxxxx/Packages/temp/install.php
Line: 51
Wasn't sure if it was conflicting with one of the other mods I had reinstalled up until that point, so I removed them all so there were no mods installed and this was the first one. Still getting the same error.

I looked at the install.php and here are the lines in that spot:

48:        $smcFunc['db_query']('', '
49: ALTER TABLE {db_prefix}messages
50: ADD FULLTEXT st_idx_subject (subject)',
51: array()
52: );
53: }

Let me know if there's additional info I can provide. Thanks!

DB type, version?

Use DB Checker (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=579906.0) to find columns added/changed by other mods.

Hmm, I've discovered that now if I go into specific forum posts I get:

QuoteDatabase Error

I bet this is related somehow...

Try to remove and install the mod again.

Or go to phpMyAdmin/Adminer and run this SQL query:
ALTER TABLE smf_messages
ADD FULLTEXT st_idx_subject (subject)

Title: Re: Similar Topics
Post by: Kindred on April 23, 2022, 09:57:26 AM
Once again, 2.0.x is approaching end of life. Almost all mods are being developed on 2.1.x now and you should be looming at upgrading, not filling another outdated forum which you're going to have to update again soon.

Additionally,  it's impolite to ask about other mods in the support topic for a specific mod.

You can use an old version (https://github.com/dragomano/Similar-Topics/tree/smf20), at your own risk.

Since I'm getting a different (but similar) error elsewhere even without the mod installed, I'm not 100% if this problem is related to this mod or is a broader issue of mine. I feel the two errors are probably related.

If you're sure this is not a problem with this mod, let me know and I'll ask my question in the general support forum. Thanks for your help!

Kindred, is it maybe due to people like you why SMF too that road? It is difficult to cope withy our constant trolling.

If you can not accept SMF 2.0 or even SMF 1.1 help request then do not read them. That is very basic behaviour.

As long as there are SMF 1.1 and SMF 2.0 support boards on this siote I would want to think they are meant for people posting there. Otherwise shut them down immediately and remove all old but the current SMF 21. versions from this website.

If this was a car related forum and somebody there was doing a posting in the oldtimer area, you would probably all the time jump in and and jump your gun on buying a new Tesla instead.

I consider your behavior trolling so why not do me and yourself a favor and refrain from replying to me? It is a waste of your and my time.

The support boards for 1.1 remain to help those upgrading to later versions. 2.0 is still supported at this time - but it won't be forever. Similarly this mod _had_ a 2.0 version but it is discontinued meaning that you probably won't get much support with it if it doesn't work for you.

That's why we encourage people moving to the current version because old versions get discontinued and at some point will no longer be receiving any support. Same for mods.

Ignore post #357. :D I'm an idiot... if I was paying closer attention, of course the other error is related to this mod. "Class-SimTopics.php". "Similar Topics." Doh. :P

So we're back to trying to figure out why it's so unhappy on my site. Can't install it because of one error, can't uninstall it to "clean up after itself" or whatever is necessary to fix the other error. Needs some tactical guru MySQL surgery, methinks.

(don't mind the chipper me... I'm on cold meds)

The layout for guests, if list with similar topics is above (OK):

Click => (https://i.postimg.cc/fkQfftQp/2022-05-12.png) (https://postimg.cc/fkQfftQp)

The layout for guests, if list with similar topics is below (destroyed):

This issue happens only when topics are viewed by guests, with other membergroups the layout is OK (I tested as admin only)

Open Sources/Class-SimTopics.php, find line #70
"cur_board": "' . $context['current_board'] . '",
and replace with
"cur_board": "' . ($context['current_board'] ?? 0) . '",

Hello Bugo!

Would it be possible for you to provide an update for the SMF v2.1.3 mod?

As a side note, I have recently installed mod v1.2.3 (which was last updated on June 25, 2022, at 01:50:24 PM), however, it appears to not be functioning properly.
