Hi SMF developers
Please look into the following as a standard release:
> Hover over username >> gives user info summary
> Profile customization >> Allow for buddies to post comments/messages to your profile
> Profile customization >> Cover photo
The profile area shown in each post really is a user info summary, albeit a bit limited in scope.
Profile comments, I've seen that in other software - personally, I don't understand the meaning of the function - but yeah, I can see someone wanting it.
Cover photo, quite honestly seems like something better suited for a modification. Again, this is just me personally - I can't speak for the whole team in this.
Firstly, 3.0 is realistically years away. Secondly I don't believe any of these are currently in line with the dev view of what SMF, a traditional forum software, should do.

I was thinking the same thing. 2.1 was only just released and already there are requests for 3.0.
2.1 isn't even final yet.

Based on past history with 2.0 how long will it probably be before 2.1 goes final (assuming it's similar timescales to 2.0)?
Considering that 2.1 has blown past all of 2.0's timescale (1.1 went final in 2006, 2.0 was started a few months before 1.1 went final, and 2.0 went final in 2011 making it around 5 years, while 2.1 is 8 years and counting)... I have no idea.
I remember estimating in 2012 that it'd be 2020, but I was joking :(

Why do you think it's taken so long? Just not enough people developing it these days? People splitting off and doing their own forks?
There was a turmoil period within the team... and it takes a while after a period like that to catch your breath and start over.

There have been, I think, 3 complete changeovers of dev team in that time. The way the initial 2.1 dev team left was... awkward.
But the single biggest problem, I think - one that has been a problem pretty much since 2006 or so is that there is a lack of vision about what it should be: if you don't know what it should be, because there's no single cohesive vision, it's hard to know when you get there.
To add to my wish list >> As a standard >> to be able to quote highlighted text instead of quoting the entire post.
That is far more realistic and I would be disappointed if that didn't make it in.

It's already in 2.1 so I wouldn't expect they'd take it away.
Actually, enhancing that feature, I wish it would float the "Quote Highlighted Text" button right next to the text you're highlighting, instead of having to scroll all the way down to the bottom of a long post to click it like you do now in 2.1. ;)
When did that make it in? Because it wasn't in 2.1 when I last checked...
It's been there for a long time now
Wasn't there, or wasn't working when I did a round of testing at RC1 stage. Haven't tested RC2.
Well looking at the git blame, it was added (https://github.com/SimpleMachines/SMF2.1/pull/2762) back in 2015, perhaps it just wasn't working when you tested and was fixed later.

To add to this, the code is also quite fragile and change sensitive. The lack of automated testing increases the change of regressions occuring. This leads to a much slower development cycle.

2030 at the earliest for 3.0 (if it ever comes out)?

Yep, as SychO says it been there for some time, I can't remember when I first actually noticed it though. As it is atm, the "Quote selected text" button only shows when you select the text, and as it's right at the bottom of the post, if it's a long post you might not actually realise it's there unless you scroll down and look.
