Title: SMF 1.0.4 released
Post by: Grudge on June 05, 2005, 09:34:16 AM
Simple Machines is happy to release the latest update to SMF. This is only a small release, which addresses an issue with the parsing of some BBC, and fixes a few minor bugs found since 1.0.3. While this is only a small release we strongly suggest that you upgrade to this version, because it will improve the security of your forum.

What's Changed:

As always, we would appreciate if you give us constructive feedback about this release, as well as bug reports.

If you are upgrading from 1.0.3, the easiest way to update is through the package manager. If not, you only need to use the "update" package as it includes only the changed files since 1.0's release. However, if you have any mods installed it would be better to use the "upgrade" package because it contains all the files for an SMF installation. Remember that you can use the "upgrade" package to come from any previous version of SMF, as well as from YaBB SE 1.5.1 or higher.

Thanks,
Simple Machines

Are you sure you don't have any disabled bbc?  What mods do you have installed?

Do I have to take a backup of the site before the uppgrade? What are the requirements for the uppgrade will work and not cause any problem?

My forum has grown and I do NOT want to lose the whole.

Best regards

I would suggest backing up if you got an itch.  Or if you had to go to the bathroom for a moment.  Backing up is not something we, or at least I, will ever say you should not do :P.

No requirements.  If SMF 1.0.3 works, and you weren't using the "Faster Parsecode" mod, it should be fine.  With that mod, you'll have problems updating.

Most of the time, not alot will happen when you upgrade, but you never know when something can go wrong, its better to back-up as you can never predict what will happen.

Faster Parsecode

Install Actions for archive CustomBBCode103_SMF103.tar.gz:
The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF.

ANYONE USING "FASTER PARSECODE":

You must use the "upgrade" package on the downloads page to update, or uninstall the package and wait for the Faster Parsecode mod to be updated.

just FYI...   this update changes on of the lines that was targetted with the SPAM-ME-NOT mod (in Subs.php)
Everything else gets changed properly, (even in that file) but the one line (since it is no longer the text that is being searched for) causes a Failure message.

didn't you try reading through the messages?

FasterParseCode will either require an UNINSTALLATION or require you to overwrite the files with the upgrade ZIP...
The mod will not install correctly with Faster Parse Code installed...  (and this would mean all the mods that also require the faster parse code need to be removed as well.)

(I see at least 4 of them in your list...  if not more)

2: unlink(Downloads/.htaccess): No such file or directory

What should i do that the Download link shows the button and not the text as link?

something like

"the package you tried to upload is either corrupted or....something."

This means your server doesn't have allow_url_fopen enabled.  1.1 will fix this, but until then, download this file:

http://mods.simplemachines.org/downloads/smf_1-0-4_package.tar.gz

Upload it to your Packages directory, and install.

what files have changed since then, and which ones are most critical for the BBCode injection problem?

Thx

erockza,

Try to install the mod through your package manager. As long as the changes you have made are not to the few lines of code changed by the update everything should be dandy.

digit,

Have you tried a package manager install yet? The main changes are in Subs.php. If you have to do it manually look through the mod file for Subs.php changes and make them - but the package should most likely install fine.

well, I just ran SMF 1.1 Beta 2 Fix    1.0 (saw it in the Package manager) and that worked fine...

All the tests for that ran fine, now when I click on You can install this patch (click here to install) the tests fail.

Does that install the patch or do I still need to do that?

At the bottom of what would be the original message it has an error

I did have the Bar of Experience installed....is that another one that is bad?  I tried to uninstall it after the upgrade, but it didn't help.

I upgraded like I always do.  Downloaded the 'smf_1-0-4_update.zip', uploaded the unpacked files to my webserver, and ran upgrade.php

As far as losing all the images [img] I never had faster parsecode so something else is going on, The update seemed to go OK but we have no images anymore and there has not been a real answer here for the problem.
We do have spam-me-not and I didn't understand the post about that. Does it mean it's not working now?
Spam-me-not is a mod and while I like it I can live without it, but the loss of images is a BIG problem for these forums.
Here's what's on it:
1.     Visual Warning / Post Moderation      1.21
2.    Banner Manager    3.4
3.    Location Mod    1.1.1
4.    Location Mod - Additional Maps    1.1.1
5.    OnLine Users Today    1.2
6.    SMF 1.0.3 Update Package
7.    Spam-me-not    1.0.1
8.    Member Specific Permissions    1.31
9.    SMF 1.0.4 Update Package    1.0.4
10.    SMF 1.0.4 Update Package    1.0.4
11.    SMF 1.0.4 Update Package    1.0.4

Why I got 3 copies of the update to .4 I have no idea. Can I delete the others?
The big thing is the images, our forum is loaded with them and it's the main thing the users love about the boards.

This upgrade makes me uneasy.

I upgraded like I always do.  Downloaded the 'smf_1-0-4_update.zip', uploaded the unpacked files to my webserver, and ran upgrade.php

That way removes *all* of your installled mods.  You'll need to fix your theme files now, or reinstall the mod.

DDT, try uninstalling it, uninstalling Spam-me-not, reinstalling it, and then trying to install Spam-me-not again.

Mods that are not okay:
Faster Parsecode
Spam-me-not
Any mod that adds custom bbc (possibly okay, possibly not.)

Mods that are okay:
Everything else.

I got it fixed!!

Good thing I'm a digital packrat lol.

I fixed it by downgrading to 1.0.3

I was able to do this because I moved my forums from my home webserver to a hosted webserver a few weeks ago.  Well I never deleted the old forum on my web server.

I just uploaded everything from my home webserver overwritting the files on my hosted server. Ran 'repair_settings.php' and it works like a charm!

I'll try upgrading to 1.0.4 again after uninstalling all my mods.

Big Problem
No "Uninstaller" for Spam-me-not so all I could do is delete all the files, restore a 1.03 from backup, then try the upgrade again. Same results. I have no idea how to get rid of Spam-Me-Not, it had a file labeled uninstaller but when tried through unuinstall packages it gave message no uninstaller for this mod...
Any ideas what to try now?

How do I use chmod? (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=23690.0)
Why chmod 777 is NOT a security risk (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=2987.0)

If in doubt, Sources and the main directory of the forum.

You can upload all of the files from the "upgrade" zip file, and then reinstall your old mods.

a bunch...  none of which SHOULD have affected the upgrade...   except for spam-me-not...   and I worked around that in the other forums too...
(one line, the email change in subs.php is the spam-me-not failure. The upgrade works if you have everything except for that one line changed.)

the smf-mambo bridge does not modify anything that is checked/updated in this upgrade.

As alwasy... backup your site...  but there should be no trouble at all doing this...
(although you may want to drop out of the bridge into the forum alone to do the updgrade, since mambo still has some issues with directory and file permissions)

verify that the modifications were actually applied as described in the .mod file by hand to subs.php

Now I'm really confused. So I should make sure the subs.php is the new file from the upgrade & that will solve the problem, or do I have to upgrade then replace the one line you are talking about that spam me not modifies?
If the first is the case I can handle that by just uploading that file manually with overwrite after running the upgrade from package manager I guess.
But if I need to change 1 line there are only about 10 thousand in there, could you point me close to the one that needs changing? :-X

DDT...  no, you misunderstood...

If you have NO other mods installed that edit subs.php, that emthod may work for you...

However, if you do have other mods that hace modified subs.php what you do is this:

Apply the patch in the package manager.
ignore the failure notice for subs.php.
then list the files in the package and view the .mod file.
find the section for subs.php
go through and verify that each of the lines (with the exception of the spam-me-not line) was changed according to the patch information.

this is not for the impatient...   if you don't know what I'm talking about now, I would say download the full upgrade pack, apply it (losing any mods) and then re-apply any mods that you want.

This error means the package manager is trying to create the file named, and it can't because Themes/default is not writable.

Thank you, I do this for free for a friend with a very active forum but no clue and I'm no PHP "coder" or "guru" as you obviously are. He has lots of mods that are simple (like the map and banner manager) that would require hundreds of users to re-pin their locations and him get me to re-do his banners. It could be done but the locations & maps would be useless, all those people won't do that again.
I didn't think it was being "impatient" to ask for a clue like "about 2/3 of the way down after the lines that say..." or whatever but because you can sort through all that PHP and it makes sense I'm unworthy of doing anything except spending hours looking and still probably not finding one line, the whole time my friends forum has lost all it's images. Since I am 100% disabled and can only stay at a keyboard at the most an hour at a time without lying down a while and since my only income is from that precious few minutes at the keyboard I really can't afford that many hours trying to help a friend even though he's a good friend.
Sorry if I insulted your skill level by seeming impatient and asking for some help. Usually here people are glad to help when they can.

If anybody can just figure out how to get rid of spam me not that would be great. Then I guess I could upgrade as normal.
If I had known it would be this much trouble I would have never installed it. His users don't understand "harvesting" programs so I thought I was doing them a favor when I installed it.

The Spam-me-not package comes with an uninstall file. Have you tried uninstalling it through the Package Manager? If it won't uninstall, either look at the Uninstall-Spam-me-not.xml file in a text editor and make the changes manually, or look at the Install-Spam-me-not.xml file and work backwards. You could also look at which files are being changed by the install file and merely replace them from your backup copies.

BTW to write this reply, I searched for spam me not, found the link to the package, downloaded the package and unzipped it to read the files. Took only a few minutes.
Title: Re: SMF 1.0.4 released
Post by: Kindred on June 08, 2005, 01:05:26 AM
the spam-me-not might comes with an uninstall xml...  but it does not process automatically in the package manager (there is no uninstall option. See my post above with the list of mods...)

I have to say, I hate SMF install/uninstall XMLs... they are very hard to read (much more so than .mod files)

I didn't read the uninstall.xml file too carefully, but, personally, I would read the INSTALL file and work backwards...
Title: Re: SMF 1.0.4 released
Post by: DDT on June 08, 2005, 01:19:16 AM
The uninstall file doesn't work with newer versions of SMF. That was discussed by several others early on in the thread.
Perhaps after a few hours sleep I'll try to figure out what you are talking about (I don't have a backup from before spam me not) but I did find a few lines of code the other person was talking about somewhere close to halfway through the over 2,300 lines of code in that file. I have no idea what they mean but it's something to do with Spam me not.
Thanks for the ideas. The developers should put up a "dummies" forum for folks like me who aren't like you guys and used to coding PHP or backwards reading XML. Or just put big warnings on the download packages that cannot be uninstalled using the regular software so people like me would leave them alone.
I have probably recommended these forums to 30-50 people since I installed his and just sent a guy an e-mail this morning about how easy he could do a forum site, probably by himself,  using SMF because the support community and developers were so great. I guess my previous "one click" upgrades and the easy answers people here had provided left me expecting too much.
Maybe while I sleep 3 or 4 hours somebody will find an easy fix to this mess.

Thanks for your efforts at help. After becoming disabled at 48 and losing my business of 20 years to bankers and lawyers (and being ineligible for ANY government benefits and broke) I had hoped to get some grant money to go to college and learn some of what you people know so I might make a few dollars but nobody will pay for the disabled to take courses on-line and the nearest college is almost an hour away (and I don't think they have much on computer stuff there)
...want some irony in your life, pay your taxes from 15-48 (33 years) then find an illegal immigrant can get money from the government but you can't and THEN find that they will help pay for the disabled get more education but only if they go to school like the healthy, not on-line...now how backwards is that?

Sounds like you didn't back up any files before installing the mod. Everything I've read here says repeadly to back up your files before installing mods or packages. Even the Package Manager warns you of that. But, I've also learned the hard way and had to manually back out of something when I hadn't backed up my files.

I don't know who "you guys" are, but I haven't received any formal education or training in PHP, XML or HTML. I've tried to learn what I can by reading and doing. Sometimes I just learn by experimentation. There are numerous free tutorials online, including some very good ones here. Just search the forum or search using Google.

One word of advice I can give you - take note of what [Unknown] writes. [Unknown] is the guru around here and does an excellent job of explaining things in words that even I can understand. If you don't understand an answer, politely ask for a better explanation and be patient. As you see from the number of messages and questions, these folks are very busy trying to help everyone.

Sorry I wasn't of much help.

The files on the download page CANNOT be installed with the package manager. The package manager update is available through a message in the Package Manager on your current install. The files on the download page here need to be uploaded manually to your forum - so it doesn't matter which file type you download.

Dam I hate a manual install of something, I am having Yabb 1.3X flashback.
I know I can manually do it by editing the file but why push out a update that is not ready and has issues with "Faster Parsecode" esp since it was just updated to work with version 1.03 ?

Tried it on 3 systems that I have and had the same failure on each, some are heavily modified, some are not, but they all have Faster Parsecode ;D

The upgrade is ready, it was released to fix a potential security hole, it can't be helped if the changes made conflict with mods.

Can you not uninstall the conflicting mod and then update?

Yes... this has been discussed many times in this thread.   The patch will not work (auto-install) with Faster Parse Code.

As for pushing out the update....  it IS ready.  Faster Parse Code is a MOD (aka a hack). If you install any mod, you are changing your system from the baseline. ..  and the developers of SMF release patches and updates to be applied to the baseline system. They can't (and should not) cater to all the various mods that COULD affect a patch...

groovie,

Do you by any chance not have changelog.txt or changelog-themes.txt in your install?

Also, the problem with index.php is you are not using the standard version number, check it's correct.

For all the people having problems with files ending in ~, this is the package manager trying to make backup files. You need to chmod the DIRECTORY which the files sit in to be writable (777 or similar), this needs to be done for the forums root directory, Sources, Themes/default and Themes/default/languages - alternatively turn off "Create Backup" from Settings.

Important ones:
Admin.php
Subs.php
Profile.template.php
Admin.template.php
Admin language files

All of the others are just version numbering.

Having done my best at the aforementioned suggestions, feeble as it may be, and still being unable to resolve the problem with Spam-Me-Not if anyone comes up with a "fix" or work around for this or a way to uninstall Spam-Me-Not I would still greatly appreciate the help.

raedzaro, the version number will only change if you also upload index.php. If you uploaded all the files in my previous post that is enough for the "fixes" to be made.

For someone using Spam-me-not, what happens if you replace the current spam-me-not zip file in your Packages directory with the attached version? I imagine it was because you installed it on 1.0.2 then upgraded to 1.0.3 where there are no uninstall actions defined - I've basically just added an uninstall action for it.

mennou, that looks like you are installing the mod - not uninstalling it? If you get that and you haven't run it maybe your Packages directory isn't writable?

ping, you don't need to run upgrade for this update. Also, pm_ignore_list is a 1.1 feature - you should *NOT* be installing 1.0.4 on a board running 1.1 - 1.1 is newer!! (Charter Members)

Right,

Let me get this straight - you are running the Spam-Me-Not mod, and that is the reason you haven't installed 1.0.4. As long as you haven't done any "partial" installing - try running the attached mod. It will appear in your admin center as "spam-a-lot uninstall" and should uninstall the spam-a-lot mod. Note it will still say the mod is installed - but will actually be done.

If this doesn't work I'm afraid you'll have to do the standard upgrade path which is:

1) Go to downloads page here - download package_1-04_upgrade.zip
2) Extract it to your computer, FTP all the files to your server*
3) Reinstall all your mods (They will all be uninstalled when you do this)

* Note: If you have modified the default theme do NOT overwrite index.template.php or style.css in the Themes/default directory.

I've read thru this thread but still not sure I might screw things up.

In terms of mods:
used the uninstall-spam-me-not succesfully
uninstalled faster parsecode

G&S Sticky - currently installed
On-line users today - currently installed

I also have hacked various files:
boardindex
boardindex.template
index.template
post
subs-post
style.css
stats.template

sorry for being so thick, but what's the best way to upgrade?

thanks

Dam I hate a manual install of something, I am having Yabb 1.3X flashback.
I know I can manually do it by editing the file but why push out a update that is not ready and has issues with "Faster Parsecode" esp since it was just updated to work with version 1.03 ?

The upgrade is ready, it was released to fix a potential security hole, it can't be helped if the changes made conflict with mods.

Can you not uninstall the conflicting mod and then update?
I have to uninstall most manually, like FP and for the life of me I can not get the Banner Manager 3.4 to uninstall even by hand >:(
Those 2 really piss me off to no end :-\
Not sure why the FP is a issue with my sites, strange but when I flashed it to 1.03 the FP stayed and worked fine even before they updated it.

I will install a test forum and then copy my old forum over it and do some testing, my main site has  Coppermine Photo Gallery & Mambo & MKportal integrated all under the same DB so I get nervous when I have to do a manual "over-write" upgrade vs a "flash" one through the admin center.

I am not knocking SMF its 1 zillion times better to work with than Yabb but many are running the FP due to its add on toys ;)

Hi Grudge

I get:

1.    Execute Modification    ./changelog.txt    File not found
2.    Execute Modification    ./changelog-themes.txt    File not found

All others operations indicate success.

Dunno where these change log files have gone, but should it affect the upgrade if they aren't there?

thanks

I suspect that your forum does not support downloading of files from our server direct to yours, download the package direct from:

http://mods.simplemachines.org/downloads/smf_1-0-4_package.tar.gz

and upload it to your Packages directory on your server and try and install it that way?

Apparently, not a one of the beta testers who tested the release were.  Still, there's little we could have done except package a special "faster parsecode" or "spam me not" edition of the upgrade, which is a bit inane.

yup,just upgraded ,everything went smooth and easy,thanks SMF crew!

Two "quickies"

1)I can see in my installed package manager the "upgrade patch" installed with of course not an unnistall option.If lets say 1.1 gets released and i upgrade using the package manager will on my list both 1.0.4 patch and 1.1 patch show? Im wondering that because one may install some mods and if he lets say follows 5 upgrades this way the lsit might get crowded.Will a future patch "sit on" and substitute the current one?

2)I am an Ostrio's bridge proud user! I installed the patch though without uninstalling and then reinstalling his bridge. was i supposed to?

Thanks!

Unforunately, the 1.1 upgrade will *not* be available as a package.  Too many changes.  It will overwrite the current patch.  But, 1.0.5 and any future patches will just work with the old patch.

For the second, yes it is fine.

Well, culpeper, it sounds like you didn't update Themes/default/Admin.template.php.

Now, the Sources, and Default Templates above both state 1.0.4

Current Templates may stay old.  Check Admin.template.php and index.template.php, which should both be newer than 1.0.

I get this message

3. Execute Modification   ./index.php   Failure

Should I "Procced"?

No.  There's some problem, and it cannot be installed.  Failure has nothing to do with chmod; only with actually not being able to make the changes.

You may have to use the regular upgrade.

welll every thing goes fine  but current templates version didn't change.any idea?
       Current Templates   1.0.1      1.0.4

The upgrader has no way to know what themes you might have installed.  Check with the theme authors for updates, if any are necessary.

thanks for reply profile.template.php is giving ******   anyway i already upgraded what should i do now?by the way can i uninstall 1.0.4 upgrade?

The changes to the Profile template are non-critical and may likely never affect you.  You can safely ignore it.

admin.template.php is current to 1.0.4.  index.template.php is 1.0 but I think that is because it is Bloc's Simplicity Theme.

If you make a copy of the sources directory, that's all you need.  You can also copy the files with tildas (~) on the end over the new versions - those files are backups.

If you have lots of mods manually installed I recommend doing neither. Simply download the little package and manually install the update - just like you would a mod. It's literally about 5 changes or something. I posted the url earlier - something like:

Please make certain you uploaded the new versions of all the files included in the package."

I get that message when I try to update.  I have gone form verson 1.0.1 to 1.0.2 to 1.0.3 to 1.0.4 and I get the same message when I try to run upgrade.php.  Any suggestions?

You don't need to run upgrade.php on those updates I believe.

EDIT: But the error is probably due to an out of date Install.english.php file or something :/

Those pre-install red "failure" notices should also have had a note somewhere on screen saying that FTP access is required to some files in order for them to be changed. When I've installed/upgraded, the Package Manager asks for the password to be able to get the access it needs. If installing manually, the permissions for some files or directories will need to changed, which is essentially what the Package Manager does itself using your password.

It only asks for your FTP details if you have not CHMODed the files to 777 even if you got all perfect successes, it could still ask you for your FTP. Did on one of the forums I had to upgrade.

littleone,

That error was caused because because your languages directory wasn't chmod to 777. It is however only the backup which failed - not the modification. Does your forum now say 1.0.4?

Hi

I hate asking this question, but I'm lost. It seems everyone here knows where the pckage manager is and I have no idea. Is it part of 1.03 or part of the dowloaded files that come with 1.04. I keep looking for a folder, a file name or something that says package manager but have no luck finding it.

Sorry for such a basic question, but I'm a rookie. Where and how do I find the package manager???

thanks

I had one forum that came up with the img issue...

I sent into subs.php and copied by hand, the first block of code from the .mod installation file for subs.php...    (that section moves the img command closer to the top of the array, while another command later in the instructions removed the old img command stuff)

Try copying that specific block, by hand, into subs.php...   that solved the problem on my one forum that encountered it...

You replied before I could delete my post.  ;D  In my defense, it is a little confusing when it says "success" like that.

I need an FTP program that can recursively change every file and folder in a directory to 777.  I had to retry 5 times.

FlashFXP is able to do that, i don't know any other. I use mainly FileZilla, then FlashFXp for some more "advanced" stuff.  :-\

Ok, so I got this message:

" The package you are trying to download or install is either corrupt or not compatible with this version of SMF."

From what I can gather earlier in this thread this means I have to upload the update to my forum folder and do it manually. Newb question, I am assuming I upload the zipped file and do not unpack it first on my hard drive, is that right?

And how do I "run php.update"?

Because of the mods I use. They will need updating.

However, I did find out a MINOR detail in 1.04. ANY of my extra smileys that I use the "$" in the BBC display code, did not work within a post. Again, this was no big deal, I believe 1.04 is suppose to iqnore the "$" within a post and thats NOT a bug.

It's bound to be one of the mods conflicting - just a case of which one :/

At a guess I'd say these are likely candidates:
Custom BB Code
Spoiler Tag
Streaming 3 3.0

In that order...

5. Execute Modification ./Sources/Subs.php Failure

Please understand, Im NOT a genius like the SMF team here. So I will give you the SMF for dummies version of how I learned a few things.

The update program search's for a file. In you case subs.php. When it finds the file (subs.php) the update starts a new search within subs.php. The search for is compairing a string of code that should already be in subs.php. If the update's chunk of "Search for" code matches EXACTLY to YOURS, the update program will then Re-write that part with NEW code, and then move on to SEARCH again for the next EXACT MATCH chunk of code and re-write, until it has no more changes of SUBs.php. Then, if ALL changes are completed, you will see "Success". Any part that could not Match exactly in the search, did not get the re-write. This will show as Failure.

Your problem is one or more of the search for chunks of code doesnt match, therefore, the update did not re-write that chunk.

This has happened to me in the past. What I did, was open the update.php and read the 'Search for", and find that myself in the FAILED file, Manually edit the chunk, putting in ONLY what the update would have, leaving the rest of the chunk of code alone.

How to? well, if you have the update.php file on your computer, I think it will "open with" note pad. Print it out. Then go to your server cpanel, find in your case subs.php, manually edit the file, save.

Anyone, please correct me if I am wrong here.

actually, there's a step that you missed:

(and note, this is only when using the package manager, not the update ZIP file)

-> Extract any NEW files from the archive and add them into the appropriate directory
-> Check that file that will be modified exist
     -> ERROR: File not Found if the file does not exist
     -> no error, nothing is displayed.
-> Open each file that will be modified:
     -> Check if the code to be modified exists in that file (as noted above, this code must match EXACTLY what the baseline SMF files looked like. If any mod has changed this code, or you have gone in and added so much as a space, this step will error)
          -> ERROR: Failure (if ALL code does not match)
          -> SUCCESS (the file CAN be modified as it needs to be)
(this steps through each potential change to each file...)

-> Check if files to be modified are writeable...
     -> ERROR: the FTP informational box appears under the success/failure list
     -> no error, nothing is displayed.

-> Check is the directories are writable, to extract the new files (see above) or create backup files
     -> ERROR: the FTP informational box appears under the success/failure list
     -> no error, nothing is displayed.

-> Enter your FTP information, if needed...

-> If you entered FTP info, the check (as listed above) is done AGAIN!

<***>  NOTE: At this point, NO CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE TO YOUR FILES.

-> Click the proceed link at the bottom of the successfailure list.

If you are using the upgrade.zip (that will clear out all your modifications)  you don't use the package manager.

Download upgrade.zip
unzip on your local drive
connect to your site via FTP and upload all the files and folders that you just extracted. (overwrite existing files)

Striker...

I would hazard to say that there is almost NO way that you arer going to get this upgrade installed (without doing the changes manually) with your mods installed.

You have at least 2 mods that depend on the Faster Parse Code still in there...

So, short of doing the upgrade manually, I suggest using the upgrade ZIP, (thus losing all your mods) and then reinstalling the mods afterwards...

I don't think you will lose the Arcade info, since those are stored in a separate file & table... (but no guarantees...)

How often did we say, that an update with mods results in loosing most of them (if you've a few installed)? And please look after the SMF version below the mod's name if you want to use it. You may have luck that it works, but it's very rare.

ShadowStriker, please be patient. The guys here are just trying to help.

Have you read my post here:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=37856.msg279223#msg279223

Basically, you will have to update your forum the old fashioned way of uploading a full set of files - then reinstalling your old mod. Unfortunately with so many mods installed it's impossible to guess at which one is incompatible - and I haven't the time to download and check every mod to see which one is the problem. Just upload the update package, and try reinstalling your old mods. At least one of them will no longer install because it's clearly incompatible.

woehrl,

Delete the member directly from their profile.

Its in the Manage Membergroups area of the Admin Center. At the bottom click the New Post Related Membergroup (something to that effect) make a group that requires 1 post. You could give it the same number of stars.

This isn't possible.

You're new to all this and complaining so much?!? Boy, if you don't take time and learn a little bit about board software, it's options and possiblities, I won't accept your screams and cries here. This is not a software for "kids", you've to learn all the features. So set up a test forum and play with it. Read yourself through the online help (questionmarks throughout the board) or read the topics and boards here.

Ahhh... I see what you're doing.

The update package on the download page here is *not* for installation through the Package Manager. The package manager only installs special "packages" - the download page is a full SMF update and has to be installed the old fashioned way (i.e through FTP). Basically, download the package to your home PC, and extract it. Then FTP the files to your forum - overwriting the old ones.

As I said previously, if you've modified your theme at all (For example, changing the colours or banner) I would *highly* recommend you *don't* overwrite the two files called index.template.php and style.css which sit in the Themes/default directory of your forum. Once you've overwritten all the files your forum with be at 1.0.4 but you will have had all your mods uninstalled. At this point you can start reinstalling your mods.

To be honest, when you have as many mods as you, it's probably quite a good idea once in a while to do this as it's something like a spring clean :) A guide can be found here:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/readme_update.html

Sorry if I wasn't being very clear before.

Boards, Posts, Members you wont lose them at all, those are stored in the MySQL database.

As for banner, I'm not sure, if you overwrite it then yes, (i.e. smflogo.jpg)

As for Pins on Members Map and High Scores. I'm not sure.
Title: Re: SMF 1.0.4 released
Post by: Grudge on June 11, 2005, 05:07:53 AM
ShadowStriker,

Right - we do two types of updates, package updates and full updates.

A "Package Update" is a small update to go from one version to another - it just contains the differences between two versions (For example 1.0.3 to 1.0.4). This will work for the vast majority of people - but just like any other mod if it conflicts with an existing mod the install will fail (Here for example the update conflicted with the Faster Parsecode Mod and Spam-Me-Not - and maybe others).

If the Package Update fails the only way to update it to upload a clean set of files for the latest version. If you do this it's necessary to upload a "Full Set" of clean files - otherwise existing mods will get half overwritten and half not - which would be awful. So basically, that "update" package has a full set of Sources files, Themes files and a few others. One of the side-effects of uploading these "clean" files is it erases all the information about previous installation of mods - as they are no longer installed.

So, why can't we do this through the package manager? We probably could I guess, although it would be a lot more work for us to Package. Also, it would mean chmod'ing every file and directory to 777 which is a lot of work for some people. In addition, it will leave the Package Manager not understanding how to uninstall the modification - as there is no way back. Maybe in the future we could allow the Package Manager to do something with these archives but really it will always be much easier to use FTP.

EDIT: You won't lose any data for mods. You will just lose the changes they made to the files. As soon as you install the mods back again all your original data will return. Remember - don't uninstall the mods first, simply upload the update, and it will wipe your installed list back to nothing - then just start reinstalling the original mods.

ShadowStrike - that is correct. Just upload the contents of the update archive to your forum directory and it will overwrite the current Sources etc before hand. Please do a backup before hand though as it's always safer to do a backup - backups make the world go round :)

woehrl,

Could you post lines 910-930 from your ManageMembers.php file? You must have some mod installed as I don't have anything like what you posted on my 1.0.4 version. Could I also suggest you post your results in a new topic in General English support so it doesn't get lost?

Title: Re: SMF 1.0.4 released
Post by: Grudge on June 11, 2005, 10:10:40 AM
No, you should be fine.

How did you create your own theme? If you did it by making a copy of the default (i.e using the "suggested" SMF route) then you shouldn't need to do anything.

If you created your own by editing the default then as long as you don't overwrite the existing index.template.php or style.css file it should all be fine.

this is the code from line 914-950

// Delete a group of/single member.
function deleteMembers($users)
{
global $db_prefix, $sourcedir, $modSettings, $ID_MEMBER;

        // Protect the person who started the forum
if ($users == 1 || in_array(1, $users) )
{
           fatal_error('You\'re not allowed to delete the administrator.');
           exit();
}
// If it's not an array, make it so!
if (!is_array($users))
$users = array($users);
else
$users = array_unique($users);

// How many are they deleting?
if (empty($users))
return;
elseif (count($users) == 1)
{
list ($user) = $users;
$condition = '= ' . $user;

if ($user == $ID_MEMBER)
isAllowedTo('profile_remove_own');
else
isAllowedTo('profile_remove_any');
}
else
{
$condition = 'IN (' . implode(',', $users) . ')';

// Deleting more than one?  You can't have more than once account...
isAllowedTo('profile_remove_any');

i have no mods installied which i think could make this error happen

You have modified your code to prevent deletion of yourself, and that's what's causing the error.

Find this:

        // Protect the person who started the forum
if ($users == 1 || in_array(1, $users) )
{
           fatal_error('You\'re not allowed to delete the administrator.');
           exit();
}

Replace with:

        // Protect the person who started the forum
if ($users == 1 || (is_array($users) && in_array(1, $users)))
           fatal_error('You\'re not allowed to delete the administrator.');

Gosh, This question is very off topic for this thread, so If the mods want to move it, by all means do so.

Mennou, I have something like this idea.
First, on all existing  boards newbie access is UNCHECKED.
Next you need a board created just for the newbies, no others have access.(uncheck all other groups but newbies)   Newbies, start at zero post count. For this board check the Posts count box. This way they stay in only that board until their post count reaches what you want for full access of your forum. Then, Create the next group level of members above newbies, with post count based of 4, If thats what you want.

As soon as the newbie makes the 4th post, the main forum will be visible and the "newbie Forum" will be hidden, because they are NO LONGER a newbie.

I really hope someone can help a newbie like me.

I used the suggested one.... but what i mean is do i need to switch the files in that theme to...
Title: Re: SMF 1.0.4 released
Post by: Grudge on June 12, 2005, 07:12:40 AM
ShadowStriker,

I don't think any recent patch has changed the core theme files? I assume in your custom theme you only really have index.template.php and style.css? If so you will be fine. You should *not* have a complete copy of the default theme files in your personal theme. (i.e Admin.template.php etc etc) - just the ones you've changed for your site.

Hope this makes sense - sorry this is taking you so long to get sorted

Well, if "install.php" was involved, you used the installer.  To upgrade, you need to use the uprader.  For help with that, check the stickies in Install and Upgrade Help (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=10.0)

Thanks for the info but when I upgraded the changelog wasn't included.  Plus, I don't have FTP access to where the forum is because David (yes SMF's David) hosts the forum for me over at Boardnation.  Could you or someone just e-mail the changelog to me?  Or, tell me where it should be like /changelog.txt or something.

N/M, I installed a test forum on another domain I own so that I can have more control over the forum and I found the changelog there.  Much appreciated for the assistance though.

I do notice, however, that the Changelog only goes up to March 2005 and doesn't include any changes for 1.0.4.  Is my changelog incorrect?

It times out in that my browser stops responding (tried in Firefox and Maxthon).  Maybe I should be waiting longer?  I mean, I gave it 3 minutes.  Should I be waiting much longer?

If it's anyhelp, I never seem able to view the package servers.  When I click on a package server the same thing happens - my browser just keeps trying to load the page indefinitely.

D'oh. Just found that I missed a post, the one with the exact info I need. Gonna try to redo subs.php

edit:
Ok, the real image problem has to do with the block about the images after the spam-me not mod.
Just re paste that section. (you may need to reinstall spammenot.

no...   the problem occurs because the update removes that section!
In the update, the img section just before the spam-me-not section is MOVED up in the array...

(the code that is added at the beginning of the array should contain the img tag section.... the code lower down is then removed.

I upgraded using Package Manager and it went off without a hitch!  :)

Well actually, there was a slight problem.  It gave a permission error when trying to upgrade files that already had a backup (i.e. index.php~, etc.)  even though those files were chmod to 777.  Perhaps the installer needs to first delete the ~ files before upgrading.  ???

Anyway, once I removed all the ~ files that changed in 1.0.4. everything worked. :D

manually changing listed files to 777 had mixed success

got some error statements but the admin center displays version 1.0.4 now

2: /Themes/default/Admin.template.php~): failed to open stream: Permission denied
File: /Sources/Subs-Package.php
Line: 1307

I found this fault on several of the backup file operations. When tracing it back, I found that I had previously downloaded some mod that created a backup file with the same name.  When I renamed those backup files, the upgrade to 04 went without a hitch.

If you were at 1.0.2 it will install 1.0.3, and you'll have to do it again to install 1.0.4, or you may not have finished installing it as [Unknown] suggests.

Question to the developers of this release - and maybe it's too general for this thread -

When I upgraded to this release, I also saw a package I wanted and decided I'd better upgrade to 1.0.4 first. That went smoothly, just some permissions stops along the way, but still less than 15 minutes to complete.  I have a pretty heavily mod'ed board, and didn't lose anything that I can tell.  Sigs work, file attachments work, etc.

I downloaded the Skype with icon package afterwards, and loaded it up.  Now I get an error/notice under the Current Versions check, for this:
Profile.template.php 1.0.1 1.0.4

After loading Skype package, it changed the template back several versions.  Now to my question - and probably answering it myself while typing here - when you release a new package like this, are all previously released mod's compatible?  Is it the creator of those mod's responsibility, if they are supporting it, to insure it's compatible???

Just curious. After I decided to uninstall the Skype mod, it still kept my profile template an older version, so I'm going to have to figure out how to get that one file updated without redoing the entire board. ???

Yes, it's the mod author's responsibility to keep his or her mod(s) current.

A mod should only change files, not revert files to stale versions.

Hey there, I think you may be replying to my question, if so then all I can say is when I loaded the Skype mod it changed one file back to an older version, assuming it overwrote that file. Under Current Templates:  Profile.template.php 1.0.1 1.0.4
Was 1.0.4 when I upgraded to 1.0.4, five minutes later after adding in Skype, it's 1.0.1, and when I unstalled Skype it stayed that way... ho hum... Hey Dan, is there some way of getting that one file updated without running through everything again?

Title: Re: SMF 1.0.4 released
Post by: [Unknown] on June 20, 2005, 11:50:47 AM
Yes, I was.  What I meant was that this means the mod is doing something "wrong".  It means that it's not "upgrade friendly", and should be changed to be so.

Reuploading profile.template.php should do the trick. If you want the mod installed open the *.mod file, see what changes need to be made and apply them manually.

The mod author is John Slater, I know him quite well, but we have had our turn of arguments latley. Hopefully all things are settled and I will try to get in touch with him.

 ;D  I LOVE SMF!!!  Great googly moogly, I've run xmB on two boards for about two years, they are really stale and not very open with their users, not to bash them, they have a great BB product.  Then I've run phpBB for about a year on another three boards, and find them to be completely and totally antagonistic to their own users, and constantly require mods to keep up with changes to their product.  At last count, I had 67 mods to my phpBB boards, all running the same mods with just variations for templates, most of those mods were to correct issues in previous releases.

SMF IS JUST FRIGGIN GREAT!  Yes, wrong place for an advert, but this sh$t smells so purty, I'd wear it along with my fur lined jock strap and my pink tutu... 8)

I recently did the automatic 1.0.4 patch via the admin section of my site. It went without a hitch, until Father's Day when I got a boardindex.php error message at login telling me that I needed to fix the database, because it was version 1.0 and not 1.0.4, despite the fact that I had successfully installed the 1.0.4 patch the day after it came out. The error (sorry I did not save it) also told me that I needed to install the full 1.0.4, then run upgrade.php.

I went ahead and did this, and reinstalled all the code changes and mod's I had done to the site.

[PS - The board runs great now]

I then went over the error_log and discovered that on May 23, May 31, and June 16, there were numerous attempts to rewrite a couple of lines of the Security.php file that was Chmod to 777. I have since Chmod the Security.php file to 755. Is it OK to Chmod the Security.php file to 755. Also, I will be happy to send the error_log file that is in binary to one or more of the 'official'  SMF developers/writers for analysis. Just contact me via Email.

To rewrite it?  You may wish to contact your host - even if it is 777, they have to be able to GET TO IT first.

Why chmod 777 is NOT a security risk (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=2987.0)

Just thought I would pass on the information, since it falls into the "you never know" category regarding security, programming, and development.

I am also well aware of the 'fact' that there are some nefarious, and less than reputable computer consultants who contract to some of the biggie server provider and routing firms, who also engage in hacking/cracking practices on a routine basis. The server and routing companies I have dealt with regarding this 'serious' security breach issue, do not apper to be the least bit wise to what these individuals are doing, and in a large majority of cases deny that this problem is going on, of course allowing the hacking/cracking perpetrators to continue doing what they are doing without anyone being the wiser.

Sorry I even bothered to bring the issue up. Just trying find ways to close the gaps and holes.
