Thanks bloc! Awesome theme. Did a little modification to the Display Template, but other than that, it is great.

I was wondering if you would release the PSD header image?   ;D

Im also wondering how I can add more links to the top navigation

Bloc, that display problem in the header is not a bug. It's just that your header image is to short so it starts to tile over on higher resolutions. I see it too and my resolution is 1280x1024.

EDIT: Oh yeah, you did an excellent job. One of your best so far :D

Ok, files are updated..but here is the updated "logo" image. Just overwrite the one in "amber11rc1/images/img" folder with this one -> (attached picture).

I will prepare a PSD file soon too.

It's a good-looking theme, but it gets a little cramped in areas like the package manager, where three is a lot of content, and also places where there already is a side menu. Only when the menu isn't collapsed, though. Other than that, it's a great theme!

Yes, with a permanent sidebar that is an unfortunate effect. The upshrink is of course meant to be used in these situations...maximize the space when you need it.

Very nice as i said on TP.net

Instead of expanding the image like that, couldn't you instead just have a horizontally repeating background underneath?

Is it only for SMF v1.1RC1 or is there a separate download for 1.0.5?

I am getting some errors on the forum error log for 1.0.5 though it's functioning.

I could, but it wouldn't look as nice ;) The idea is that people can blend in their own "header image there..I am working on adjusting the PSD so its just a matter of adding it to a layer and then save the 3 slices in Photoshop.

The theme doesn't use buttons - only text links which lie on top of a graphic bar. Look at template_menu() function in index.template.php and copy one of those code bits there to add more links.

If you need help, let me know what the link(s) and name(s) are to be. ;)

wow cool this theme even gets better - no buttons!! Man!!

well I opened the theme template file and found the place to add more buttons
but the if statements totally confused me and I was frozen for 5 mins (esp since i dont know any php) I was scared I would do something wrong!

So if you dont mind can you tell me how I can put these 2 links?

Link Description: Path-To-Peace
Link Address: http://path-to-peace.com/zimzim2.html
Location of Link Last link in the bar

Link Description: P2PChat
Link Description: http://path-to-peace.com/chat/
Location of Link Second Link in the bar

Thank u so much for all ur help - u are very kind
There is no flowers smiley here or else I'd give u flowers

:) Thanks for the flowers..

ok, you need first to open up index.template.php and find "function template_menu();" and this line:
echo $tab1, $ca== 'home' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '">'.$txt[103]. '</a></td>';

Put this on the next line:
echo $tab1, '2"><a href="http://path-to-peace.com/chat/">P2PChat</a></td>';

then find this line:
echo $tab1, $ca== 'logout' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=logout;sesc='.$context['session_id'].'">'.$txt[108]. '</a></td>';

and add on the next line:
echo $tab1, '2"><a href="http://path-to-peace.com/zimzim2.html">Path-To-Peace</a></td>';

I think this theme is sooo good that if u made others just like it but with different header images and colors it would be DA BOMB x 10000

- Summer with a nice sunny nature header
- Winter with a nice snowy header
- Spring time with a nice grassy header
- Autumn the existing one could serve as that

Just some suggestions.

Hmm an idea.

You've done helios up with some tricksyhard multi system. Would it be possible to include that in all of your themes? I haven't downloaded it so I don't have the code, but as you already have the functions working, would it be very difficult to implement it in other themes too? The simplicity of the clicky buttons at the top is great, and it would be amazing if somehow it could become the standard in bloc themes. You'd become even more famous!
Oh, and that just made be think- simplicity also has the the quick colour changes too!

Don't bother for your old themes, but in your future themes this would be a great feature. You wouldn't even need to provide the secondary colours, just have the colour selection buttons. Anyone could then make their own colour/image sets and upload here or on TP.net

Anyways it's just an idea. You've got a lot more to do first.

Post by: Gobo on November 28, 2005, 08:01:18 AM
I think the best thing about ur amber theme (apart from the design and other cool things like side bar) is the no buttons approach to the top nav bar.

The reason i say this is cos in my last forum on invision it was as simple as abc to add new links and stuff on to the board itself. But since ive started using SMF (4 days ago) the most troublesome thing that I have personally found is to have to manually update everything by changing codes and adding buttons to theme folders etc. I have I think about 10 themes installed and I use only Amber. Why? Well the above said reason..its easy to update (easier than others atleast).

Some of my users also love helios and were sad to see it being put off the selection list (cos of the buttons issue) but the only thing im left with now is installing a portal around my forum to resolve the issue of adding / subtracting links. I would have loved to use tiny portal but due to the lack of a user gallery (which I wana use as an ecard system for my site) I had to use mkportal.

I think if you were able to include an e-card / gallery thingie to ur tiny portal along with the ability to include flash images / movies (which could be sent as e-cards) then ur portal will not be DA BOMB but DA A-BOMB amongst portals. Just a suggestion I thought I would give.

About the links/buttons..I think adding more links could be more streamlined..in Black22 (and even Helios) I have 4-5 extra boxes in "current theme settings" - to add extra buttons. Just supply name and link. Its not positionial of course(you can't put it number 2 for example) but that can be added, making adding extra links a breeze.

Using text links instead of buttons are also very convenient for other languages, it will just use whatever language you have installed, rather than having to make buttons in that language. In Amber there is a mix of texts and graphic buttons, but you are more likely to change the main buttons than the reply/quote etc. buttons.

Thanks for the input on TP and gallery ideas. I will take this into consideration when adding that function.

Ok. Try to change it by going to style.css and finding "textarea". That controls the size in postbox etc. Currently I have at 9pt(the fontsize) so try increasing it to 10 or 11pt.

In fact, textarea share that size with input and button classes..so you might want to separate them. Going from:
input, textarea, button
{
font-size: 9pt;
color: #000000;
font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;
}

to:
input, button
{
font-size: 9pt;
color: #000000;
font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;
}
textarea
{
font-size: 10pt;
color: #000000;
font-family: tahoma, sans-serif;
}

Ah I didn't realize there was a version for the themes! You are probably right then... I have the 1.0.5 version.  I found a way to switch so I'm gonna leave it up.  I'm anxiously awaiting the stable release of 1.1

I've never had it happen with any other theme.  I probably have 10 themes installed and recently I've been adding buttons to all of them so I test everyone one of them and I'm always able to switch.  When I went to this theme, clicking on 'use this theme' for a different theme did nothing.  Finally I tried preview and then use this theme and that allowed me to change.   I continued to work on some of the themes last night adding a paypal button to them.  Again they all switched properly.

Hey Bloc I wanted to thank you again for the wonderful Amber theme.

I made you a lil something, its not much but I hope you like it:

http://www.geocities.com/aku4aku/photocopy.swf

To use it you will have to download 2 very small files

http://www.geocities.com/aku4aku/photocopy.swf

and

http://www.geocities.com/aku4aku/photocopy.txt

u can change the text inside the text file to change the display and message in the swf file.
Take care and thanks again

Thanks Bloc, you're awesome ;)

I'm actually looking for quite a few languages  :P I've been blessed with the capability of learning new languages quite easily (so I've taken advantage of that in the past :)).

Those languages requested be:

German, Spanish Mexico, French, Romanian, Norwegian, Dutch, Polish, Greek, Italian, Portuguese AND Russian.  :D

Much obliged for the theme, top notch TOP NOTCH.  8)

I got some - but not romanian,greek,polish and russian. i will see if I can muster up the translations for them - becuase thats what I need basically, I have made a custom written script that render all buttons in a set in one swoop. :)

Spanish Mexico..is that very different from regular spanish?

Spanish (Mexico); Spanish (Spain). Almost the same thing but have some differences. Regular Spanish is good ;).

But much thanks for doing this :D

Forgot to ask here. This theme's coding is something that is relatively new to me. How do I put the shoutbox on the bottom where the stats are located? I tried to do it myself and got parse errors, so I think I was throwing the code around where it shouldn't of been.  :P
Title: Re: [Theme] Amber (SMF v1.1RC1)
Post by: bloc on December 07, 2005, 08:12:57 AM
Try adding it to BoardIndex.template..copying one of the code blocks there, like // online users etc. Basically its just a echo '<tr><td>..</td></tr>'; with php+html code inbetween.
Title: Re: [Theme] Amber (SMF v1.1RC1)
Post by: PitViper on December 07, 2005, 11:29:00 AM
K, I tried doing that and was semi sucessful except for the time when it completely skewed my page lol  ;D

What I am attempting to do is to throw it into the side bar, kind of like in the same type of frame as the search and and news, but just below the stats one. (I hope that made sense).

Or as easily enough said, I want the shoutbox to have the same type of appearance as the other items in the menu bar (i.e. Search, the News box), just not a gray strip running all the way down my page. I need it to be compressed into some type of frame, kind of like a...well here:

(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi27.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fc194%2FRedDrake%2FShoutbox.jpg&hash=498db81a6e112c5bfac2cdd4f5ae69458b794980)

Just replace the News header with Shoutbox, and the content itself within that little tiny box will be the shoutbox along with the Send button somewhere.  :-\ :-\ :-\

Just don't want to screw it up again and have to reinstall everything...like i've done numerous times.

Hi Bloc  :)

Many thanks for this theme - it's absolutely great!  :D

Since I am totally new to all this SMF-stuff I have got two questions, which might seem rather silly (but who cares...)

1. I know that there are no buttons in the theme, just links. Where are they stored and what do I have to do to translate them in german?
2. I don't know if it's related to the theme, but all posts in my forums are sorted newest down to oldest. (I hope you know what I mean). Even though this has it's advantages, I'd like the posts sorted the other way round (like in this forum: first comes the initial post, the the follow-ups)... Unfortunately I can't find the setting anywhere in SMF. Can you please tell me where I have to look or what I have to do?

Many thanks,
Matze

Thank you. :)

1. The links will use whatever is used for the language you have..so just install your language and the links will auto-filled with correct strings. But..there are buttons still, and they need to be made(I haven't had the time yet). you can see them in threads etc.

2. Go to your profile and choose "look and layout preferences" and try "Show most recent posts at the top".

Is anyone here using the Amber_tp theme and if so have you been able to add new buttons to the link bar at the top?  I'm trying to add a chat and mod button.  I've tried using the codes for the regular amber theme and keep getting a parse error.

If its the tp version made by me, it should be the same? The menu section is the same, just have 2 extra buttons for forum and tpadmin.

Yes it is your theme, Bloc and I just figured it out.  I've been playing with it most of the night.  I'm a total nOOb with php.  Nothing posted over at your board would work for me everything I tried that they posted gave me a parse error of some kind, so I kind of took everything I learned from there, looked in the index.template.php to see how you coded the other buttons, and I came up with this

// Show the [chat], [shop] and [your] buttons.
    echo $tab1, $ca== 'chat' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=chat" target="_blank">Chat</a></td>';

It now shows up perfectly and works flawlessly.  Now that I have this working, I will just/copy paste the same line again under it and change the particulars for the shop or any other mods I may install.  For others running into this, I added that code before this line in the amber 1.1rc1 index.template.php
// If the user is a guest, show [login] and [register] buttons.

By the way the theme is awsome and I just started playing around with all the things Tinyportal does.  Simply incredible work Bloc, thank you! :D

Hi Bloc, nice theme by the way, thanks for that.

One question - I'm trying to add an extra button to the top menu, which will just link back to my main site.

I saw on a previous page that you suggested this to someone:

Quote from: Bloc on November 27, 2005, 06:36:47 PM
:) Thanks for the flowers..

ok, you need first to open up index.template.php and find "function template_menu();" and this line:
echo $tab1, $ca== 'home' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '">'.$txt[103]. '</a></td>';

Put this on the next line:
echo $tab1, '2"><a href="http://path-to-peace.com/chat/">P2PChat</a></td>';

then find this line:
echo $tab1, $ca== 'logout' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=logout;sesc='.$context['session_id'].'">'.$txt[108]. '</a></td>';

and add on the next line:
echo $tab1, '2"><a href="http://path-to-peace.com/zimzim2.html">Path-To-Peace</a></td>';

I tried to do that, but when I opened up index.template.php I don't have a section where it says "function template_menu();" .  It says template_menu(); but that is it, and there is nothing below it linkt he line you said about above.

Is it possible for me to attach my file so you can see for yourself?  The link to my forum if you need to look is www.pressstartonline.co.uk/forum

Cheers mate.

Yea I actually have a question... Ive tried viewing this in Opera, Firefox, and IE, but for some reason the avatars have a scroll button underneath (the whole avatar doesnt show unless we scroll).. is there anyway to fix that? Yes ive tried doing the image resize but it doesnt work (And i have gdmodule installed on server).

If the avatar is beyond a certain size it will get a scrollbar as to not destroy the layout of the post.

Open Display.template of Amber and find:
// Show avatars, images, etc.?
if (!empty($settings['show_user_images']) && empty($options['show_no_avatars']) && !empty($message['member']['avatar']['image']))
echo '
<div style="overflow: auto; width: 100%;">', $message['member']['avatar']['image'], '</div><br />';

Just remove the overflow: auto; bit and you get no scrollbars.

Background-image is set in the style.css..look for body tag and this:

background-image: url(images/img/back.jpg);

It should be in the PSD file as well..as one "slice" there on the left I think. Its made such that it repeats itself for the width, but not for the height. I also applied a background-color matching the last pixel on that "slice"..to make it seamless.

I'm wondering if you had figured out what causes the newsbox and searchbox width to be off on IE though? I've read this thread quite a few times now and don't think I saw anything that said there was a fix. Everything seems to work great with FF.

Forgot to add:

I have tried adding google ads in the sidebar that we can add content to (via admin panel), but it creates a scrollable box instead of actually expanding. Is there a way to correct this or is not possible to add ads?
Title: Re: [Theme] Amber (SMF v1.1RC1 - v1.1RC2)
Post by: bloc on January 18, 2006, 03:21:56 PM
I think its the form elements with fixed widths that cause trouble. I will see if I can just remove that or set it to percent values instead.

For the scroll to be off, find this code:
// Show a random news item? (or you could pick one from news_lines...)
if (!empty($settings['my_sidebar_title']) && !empty($settings['my_sidebar']))
echo '<br /><div style="padding: 2px 5px 2px 20px;" class="titlebg0"><b>'.$settings['my_sidebar_title'].'</b></div>
<div class="windowbg02" style="padding: 10px;">
<div style="width: 170px; height: 50px; overflow: auto; padding: 5px;" class="smalltext">', $settings['my_sidebar'] , '</div></div>';

and remove the "overflow: auto;" stuff.

Hey bloc, I wanted to make another inquiry from you.

Still using the Amber theme, and SMF 1.1 RC2, I want to know if the following is possible and if you by chance knew, how to do this...

I'm interested in adding a feature to the search function.

I want to enable a member to start a topic from the search feature if they haven't found what they were looking for.

Something that says along the lines of: "Couldn't find what you're looking for? Click here to start your own topic."

...My board's currently seperated into several categories though, would it be possible to have that link in the search bar (to create a new post), direct those users to a particular category - to start that topic? I guess before that could be answered, is it at all possible to do what I'm referring to? And if so, would you be able to tell me what I need to do?
Title: Re: [Theme] Amber (SMF v1.1RC1 - v1.1RC2)
Post by: bloc on January 19, 2006, 03:44:48 AM
uhm..that was quite a bit of change. :)

How about this then...it will only add the question if the search return no results though:

- copy over a duplicate of Search.template from default theme to Amber theme.
- Open it and find the follwing:
else
echo '
<td width="100%" colspan="5">', $txt['search_no_results'], '</td>';
echo '
</tr>';

- add on the next line (feel free to change the question):
if (empty($context['topics']))
{
             // no results..perhaps let them start a new topic?
          echo '<tr class="windowbg"><td colspan="5"><br />
          Couldn\'t find what you\'re looking for? Post in one of the following boards instead:<ul>';

//check if we have a board ID set in field 1
if(!empty($settings['ask_board1_id']))
echo '<li><a href="' , $scripturl , '?action=post;board=' , $settings['ask_board1_id'] , '.0">' , $settings['ask_board1_name'] , '</a></li>';

//check if we have a board ID set in field 2!
if(!empty($settings['ask_board2_id']))
echo '<li><a href="' , $scripturl , '?action=post;board=' , $settings['ask_board2_id'] , '.0">' , $settings['ask_board2_name'] , '</a></li>';

//check if we have a board ID set in field 3!!
if(!empty($settings['ask_board3_id']))
echo '<li><a href="' , $scripturl , '?action=post;board=' , $settings['ask_board3_id'] , '.0">' , $settings['ask_board3_name'] , '</a></li>';

echo '</ul></td></tr>';
}

- then search for:
if (empty($context['topics']))
echo '
<table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" class="bordercolor"><tr><td>
<table border="0" width="100%" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="1" class="bordercolor"><tr class="windowbg2"><td><br />
<b>(', $txt['search_no_results'], ')</b><br /><br />
</td></tr></table>
</td></tr></table>';

- and replace that with:
if (empty($context['topics'])){
echo '
<table border="0" width="100%" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" class="bordercolor"><tr><td>
<table border="0" width="100%" cellpadding="2" cellspacing="1" class="bordercolor"><tr class="windowbg2"><td><br />
<b>(', $txt['search_no_results'], ')</b><br /><br />';

             // no results..perhaps let them start a new topic?
          echo 'Couldn\t find what you\'re looking for? Post in one of the following boards instead:<ul>';

//check if we have a board ID set in field 1
if(!empty($settings['ask_board1_id']))
echo '<li><a href="' , $scripturl , '?action=post;board=' , $settings['ask_board1_id'] , '.0">' , $settings['ask_board1_name'] , '</a></li>';

//check if we have a board ID set in field 2!
if(!empty($settings['ask_board2_id']))
echo '<li><a href="' , $scripturl , '?action=post;board=' , $settings['ask_board2_id'] , '.0">' , $settings['ask_board2_name'] , '</a></li>';

//check if we have a board ID set in field 3!!
if(!empty($settings['ask_board3_id']))
echo '<li><a href="' , $scripturl , '?action=post;board=' , $settings['ask_board3_id'] , '.0">' , $settings['ask_board3_name'] , '</a></li>';

echo '</ul></td></tr></table>
</td></tr></table>';
}

- ok, half there. :) Open up Settings.template from Amber and find:
array(
'id' => 'number_recent_posts',
'label' => $txt['number_recent_posts'],
'description' => $txt['number_recent_posts_desc'],
'type' => 'number',
),

- and add on the next line(be sure to find the exact code above):
array(
'id' => 'ask_board1_id',
'label' => 'ID of board 1',
'description' => '',
'type' => 'number',
),
array(
'id' => 'ask_board1_name',
'label' => 'Name of board 1',
'description' => '',
'type' => 'text',
),
array(
'id' => 'ask_board2_id',
'label' => 'ID of board 2',
'description' => '',
'type' => 'number',
),
array(
'id' => 'ask_board2_name',
'label' => 'Name of board 2',
'description' => '',
'type' => 'text',
),
array(
'id' => 'ask_board3_id',
'label' => 'ID of board 3',
'description' => '',
'type' => 'number',
),
array(
'id' => 'ask_board3_name',
'label' => 'Name of board 3',
'description' => '',
'type' => 'text',
),

- Done.

Now all you do is go into current theme settings and add the board ID you want people to post in, and a name ( just the board name if you like). The code checks if board ID field is empty, so if you don't set anything, it won't show.

I just added 3 of those ID/name fields, but you see the logic, so you can add more if you like. Below is a screenshot of how it looks.

Bloc..
I have a question about adding buttons to your theme RC2. I need to add a button at the top where login is for a gallery button. I have read what you wrote earlier and made the changes to index.template.php but the button doesn't show when displayed. I have just integrated coppermine and need this. See below...

function template_menu()
{
   global $context, $settings, $options, $scripturl, $txt;

   $ca = 'home';

   // find the action
   if(isset($_GET['action']))
   {
      if (in_array($_GET['action'],array('search','admin','calendar','profile','mlist','register','login','gallery')))
         $ca = $_GET['action'];
      else
         $ca = '';

      // admin section....
      if (in_array($_GET['action'],array('admin','modifyModSettings','modsettings','maintain','reports','viewErrorLog')))
         $ca = 'admin';
   }
   // messageindex/display then?
//   if(isset($_GET['topic']) || isset($_GET['board']))
//      $ca = '';

   echo '<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0"><tr><td><img src="'.$settings['images_url'].'/img/tab_first' , $ca=='home' ? '_active' : '' , '.jpg" alt="" style="margin: 0;" /></td>';

   $tab1 = '<td class="tab';

   // Show the [home] and [help] buttons.
   echo $tab1, $ca== 'home' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '">'.$txt[103]. '</a></td>';
   echo $tab1, $ca== 'help' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=help" >'.$txt[119]. '</a></td>';
   echo $tab1, $ca== 'gallery' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '\gallery\index.php" >'.$txt['gallery']. '</a></td>';

   // How about the [search] button?

What am I doing wrong? Thanks

Steven

I am afraid it isn't possible..you see, the gallery button goes to a outside link, and SMF will never know about it. So if you press gallery, the button will not be "marked".

And.. the gallery link is wrong. What you will get now is in fact:

index.php\gallery\index.php

..which do not work. You need to make the link something like:
<a href="mysite\gallery\index.php" > where mysite is the adress to where coppermine is.

bloc - great theme! love it a lot. nice work!

a variation on colors would be awesome too of course since we all love it so much.

A - what part of the CSS file do i change to increase the font for the text inside of the threads typed by the poster and submitted.

B -how can i change the code to add the index name also in front of the most recent post listing instead of it just showing the category like shown in the example below?

[SMF Support Themes : Graphic Buttons]

C - and then left align that column just in case it looks better like that?

D - can i modify the icon that shows for categories with new topics. i think its called on.gif. id like to make it have a readish or some brighter color to make it stand out a lot more. when i go to try to do it in paint it draws funny colors instead of the color i choose. its strange lol. is the file special in some way that i dont know about?

E - also, my 'quick edit' seems to work all the way up until i want to SAVE or SPELL CHECK. cancel works but the other two button dont. ive seen it work on other themes so not sure what happened. this sites quick edit feature is working for me by the way.

F - i would like to be able to allow the users of various ages change the text size for the entire site. older people need larger text. some themes can do this using the mouse scroll button and <ctrl> key. how do we change your theme so that all the text does that? right now only the main title in the header does that?

G - lastly, i would like to add a Privacy page to the theme. i know how to add buttons at the top. my privacy page just needs text wrapped by the theme adn its fucntionality. nothing special. is there a blank page i could use and insert my text and link it with a button at the top of the theme?

thanks for any help!
Title: Re: [Theme] Amber (SMF v1.1RC1 - v1.1RC2)
Post by: bloc on February 15, 2006, 07:41:18 PM
A - try .post in style.css
B/C - BoardIndex.template? I am not really sure what you are refferring to.
D - Its a regular GIF file..should be easy enough to change, but I would not use MS Paint for it - if thats what you use. Try another graphic editor.
E - It should work fine on a SMF 1.1RC2 forum. Do you use the correct version of the theme?
F - You should be able to do a ctrl + on Firefox for increased size, and using the menu option in IE the same way. Or did you mean the theme should have a button for it? That will require quite some changes, since the the size will then just go back on any page change. I am looking at adding that to a new theme I ma working on, but Amber will not have this in the immediate future.
G - No, the theme does not offer any "blank" pages for you. You will need to change things in the source files to allow that. One way could be to use the "Static Page Mod" that will allow this sort of thing.

hi block.

B/C - what im talking about is when you enable to recent posts. they show up at the bottom of the screen. look on your own site. id rather have the parent topci show up as well such as is shown below:

[SMF Support Themes : Graphic Buttons] Re: Color Change by admin Jan 02, 2006, 04:54 AM

instead of just:

[Graphic Buttons]

E - yes im using your amber 1.1-rc2 code and the 'modify' button works, but not the quick edit. it does show me the edit box in place but wont do anything when i hit the 'save' or 'spell check' butons. just the 'cancel' button works. however, it works on this site without a problem. im using smf 1.1-rc2 as well.

F - this text increase/decrease feature only works for certain fonts or cerain situations whwere the style is specified one way or the other, maybe pt's instead of pixels. no idea. but it makes themes much better since more users can see the font size they want by just using <ctlr>-mouse scroll. know anything about this? your titel header on the upper right hand side does what i want.

in fact, this site here does it too. try it. the text will go bigger and smaller.

Sunseeker, the recent topics thinsg are really nothing to be done with in the theme..parent boards are not added becuase then the string can get very long. And again, Amber theme can't do anything about ti, it just receives the info from source files and displays them in its own way. tahts what themes do. ;)

Quick-edit on messageindex then? is that what you mean?

panazen, you are probably using the wrong version fo Amber on your forum, it will cause that kind of error usually.

bloc, thanks for the replys.

B/C: i gotcha buddy - i understand its not a theme thing to add the parent board in there. i guess i was just asking how to do it. maybe if you know the variable name for the parent then i could go add it myself. im still learning. mayb enot the palce to ask you questions like that.

E - i dont know what you call it. its the little side icon/button you click on to teh right of each message posted. it open the post inline and allows you to do the edit. i believe its called AJAX. also, the quick edit on the message index doesnt work for me either. it tries to but give me an error message. maybe their related somehow in the problem. again the save and spell check doesnt work. the cancel works though. and as i justs mentioned the thread title edit doesnt work either. it give me this error mesage:

An Error Has Occurred!
Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again.

which i tried many different ways already and cant get it to work. the box comes up for me to edit the text, but when i go to hit enter it gives me that error message.

UPDATE: regarding the error for the title edit when you hit enter, as you would expect to do, it gives that error. but when you click elsewhere after making changes then it doesnt it and the change is made.

but i still cant quick-edit (AJAX) the message.

F - do you know how to change the code so that the increase and descrease in text size is done via the <alt> -mousescroll button?

bloc,

also i just verified the error ive been talking about.

this is the one regarding the in-line (AJAX) editing feature using the edit icon to the left of the post near the bottom.

i installed smf into a brand new directory.

i used the 1.1 rc2 and overwrote the files, etc, and ended up with a 1.1rc2 smf.
tested the in-line editing with the default theme version, works fine.

i then took a freash copy of your amber theme and installed it using the theme manager.

i then tried to do the editing again. it failed. clicking the icon gives me the in-line editing box, but after im done editing i click SAVE and it doesnt work. i cant click SPELL CHECK either. CANCEL works though.

also, i went back and change the them to the deafult supplied with the installation again and it works.

any ideas whats going on?

here is there error tha tmight be associated with it:

---------------
line: 88
char: 2
error: document.forms.quickModForm.subject' is null or not an object
code:0

I have gone through the Display.template where the inline editing takes place , and it was indeed a few mistakes in the javascript. It was showing in IE more so than Firefox, but should work fine in both now.

You can either download the archive again and replace Display.template - or use the attached one.

About your other questions..I may have been a bit lost..are all still current? :)

oh yes they are all still very current or of interest. im hot on this theme.

love it.

all those posts are valid if you can read them again.

did you ever understand what i meant by the text on some themes being able to resize, etc? try it on this site. and try it on yours. yours is static. i want to change it but not sure what causes it to happen or not happen. im guessing its the type of font or how the font is defined.
Title: Re: [Theme] Amber (SMF v1.1RC1 - v1.1RC2)
Post by: bloc on February 28, 2006, 06:17:06 AM
Most likely all the font-sizes are in % or in ems on this site. Amber use either "small/x-small" or for example 9pt. So if you set all to % instead, you should be able to resize better. In my newest theme I am using only percent, just for this reason. :)

I am not at home now, so I don't recall exactly what size is used in the Amber stylesheet.

Any chance of a matching MKPortal Amber theme to go with this?

I think this is going to be absolutely perfect for our scouting website -  I thought I'd do a little begging.....

Title: Re: [Theme] Amber (SMF v1.1RC1 - v1.1RC2)
Post by: bloc on March 02, 2006, 06:13:21 AM
Well, I am not converting any SMF themes to MKPortal format any longer..since the introduction of the "SMF theme" option in MKP ( where it takes the colors from SMF). But I can see it the advantage having something integrated on the sides..more like the TinyPortal version of Amber. There is one drawback of that..whereas TP just use the SMF template and add its own column(s), MKP have separate columns for itself "outside" SMF..so it will not be so easy to do the same there.
Title: Re: [Theme] Amber (SMF v1.1RC1 - v1.1RC2)
Post by: belindaj on March 02, 2006, 08:45:58 AM
Hmm back to MKP - I was not aware of that MKP option to take the colors from an SMF theme - and that would probably work. Thanks for the heads up!

[edit]
OK - I did find the option to use the Forum colors - and that will work satisfactorily. I have one question that I can't figure out though - I've gone through every line of the these CSS for Amber and I can't figure out where the top of the forum color is specified (dark grey/blueish color behind the rounded navigation bar) When you put the forum inside the MKPortal - that dark color doesn't seem right - I'd prefer to make it match the medium/light grey-blue.

Its actually a graphic..try to hold over there and select "view image" or "view background image". Then you get the filename and can change it.

Post by: belindaj on March 02, 2006, 01:06:45 PM
I think there's some javascript messing with the location of the file - because if I right-click on it (in IE) I don't get an image name - I just get index.php.

I'll keep messing with it - I like how it's coming together - with a few exceptions that have less to do with your SMF theme than they do with the MKPortal integration with the SMF forum :(

I think I'm going to check out your Tiny Portal and see if it will be more suitable for this particular project than MKP.

just wondering what the .psd file allows us to do? im guessing its to edit the entire set of images. but how do you go from all of those down to the little pieces that you create for each jpg etc?

is the process to create the over all image for the .psd file and then break it al apart?

i would just like to create a different background for the logo and am trying to use a tool called gimp2. fancy tool. lots of options. simple painting is hard to figure out since its new to me of course.

It was quite some lines..and I changed some of the code too. You would be better off using a compare utility to see the difference. Ultimately I can do that for you, if you send me the Display.template. ;) (use my email in the profile)

Any tabs will need to be "recognised" for them to be highlighted. For instance, if you write index.php?action=search, the search button highlights because "action=search" is defined as a "highlight check" for that button.

So i need to know which buttons do not highlight, and what their links are. Then we can add the needed checks.

just wondering what the .psd file allows us to do? im guessing its to edit the entire set of images. but how do you go from all of those down to the little pieces that you create for each jpg etc?

is the proce
ss to create the over all image for the .psd file and then break it al apart?

i would just like to create a different background for the logo and am trying to use a tool called gimp2. fancy tool. lots of options. simple painting is hard to figure out since its new to me of course.

thanks

If you are familiar with Photoshop, you will see its split up in "slices" that you simply save, overwriting the current ones. Though not the easist solution, it can work this way. If there is a demand I can see if I can make it a bit more user-friendly.

bloc,

thats awful generous! thanks! but i cant request that from you. much appreciated however!

i went ahead and bite the bullet and converted mine over. works fine so far. :D

as for the .psd files: i dont quite get how they can be used. do we modify the peices there and then break them into .jpg files later to be used or how does this work? i know that the .psd file with the entire set of graphics is in it. but i also see most, if not all, of those in separate .jpg files.

you dont mean to tell me that the .psd file, when saved after mods, will automatically break up into separate .jpg files as defined would they? wouldnt that be killer!

i guess im trying to figure out how best to change the colors of some of these things as well. im learning. what i really need to do is change the header to one of these thin black/dark-blue repeating horizontal lines, and then put the mist and no mist on it to see how it looks.

im trying to use a program called GIMP2. its free and seems powerful. does the layers stuff, etc. but im learning it. is photoshop free somewhere?

love this theme! its one of the best imo! thanks for it!

now im off to tackle the tabs problem...

block,

your board index template is coming up with 1.1 RC1 and highlighted in red during a admin check in smf.

will this need any changes to it to comply with 1.1 RC2 ?

QuoteBoardIndex.template.php     1.1 RC1       1.1 RC2

Its simply a marker..it will not influence if its not updated. Its good to update it though - if the template is indeed upgraded, so SMF assumes its updated (by looking at that number).

About Photoshop, its not free I am afraid...but you are partly correct in that it will save "pieces" that are for the left/right part and one for the middle.

the 'Help' and 'My Messages' do not highlight.

also, is there one place that i set the color for the overall entire forum background like in the .css file or do i have to modify the .psd file directly for that or do i have to modify each separate .jpg file for that?

thanks!

you will need to modify the background image and its a .jpg not a .png aswell as the .css

I had the same problem. You will need to update the code in "index.template.php", this should fix the problem. Here is the code that you need to update:

In index.template.php. look for this line:

>       if
> (in_array($_GET['action'],array('search','admin','calendar','profile','mlist','register','login')))

needs to be:

>         if
> (in_array($_GET['action'],array('search','admin','calendar','profile','mlist','register','login','help','pm')))

..if you don't have those two last itmes ( 'pm' and 'help') the links will not highlight.

Again Thanks, Bloc for the help.

mfowler, thanks for the help on those tabs!

bloc,

is this the correct way to add a tab at the top that links to an outside of smf site?

echo $tab1, '2"><a href="http://domainname.com/xxx/index.php">Magazine</a></td>';

also what does the 2 in the above statement do? and below there is 1 and 2. what do they do functionally?

echo $tab1, $ca== 'help' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=help" >'.$txt[119]. '</a></td>';

thank you for any help

It will render either a class1 or class2 based on what the "action" value is currently. In search screen, the action=search, therefore class2 is rendered, otherwise class1.

Class2 is the one that give the highlight effect. Of course, in a outside link the hightlight will never occur.

First of all, I LOVE this theme; nice work =)

I need some help though..
I'm trying to change the colors,
but I don't know where I can find the code to make this part purple:
(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg364.imageshack.us%2Fimg364%2F7585%2Fscreenshot0yb.gif&hash=889c122cbae66d40fd11a6cff6412208491eabcb)

I don't know if someone already asked you this, but is there a way to make
the newsbox the same size as the other boxes? I use IE, and it looks like this:
(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg53.imageshack.us%2Fimg53%2F6990%2Fscreenshot23zx.gif&hash=e1e8a13f08e29c0d5c609c98a6a0b000e0fc1096)

I hope you can help me..

Love,
Marlou

--------------------------- EDIT ---

I already know how to change the size of the newsbox.
I also have a new question:
Where can I find the settings to change searchbox?

Try opening index.template and find this code:
<td style="background-image: url('.$settings['images_url'].'/img/left.jpg); background-repeat: repeat-y;" ><img src="'.$settings['images_url'].'/img/left.jpg" alt="" style="margin: 0;" /></td>
<td valign="top" width="180" style="background-color: #CCD5DE;">
<div id="upshrinkHeader" style="height: 100%; background-color: #CCD5DE; ', empty($options['collapse_header']) ? '' : 'display: none;' , '">
<img src="'.$settings['images_url'].'/blank.gif" style="margin: 0;" width="208" alt="" height="4" /><br />';

Change the #CCD5DE parts there to your color.

Hi, first of all this is the only theme I have liked completly. My hat's off to you!

I have SMF 1.07, I know I need to switch to 1.1 RC2 to run the Amber correctly.

My worry is I will lose all the forum members posts and all the forum members (hundreds) and they would have to resign up.

Can I switch to 1.1 RC2 without this happening?
my site is:

Google ads inbetween logo and forum board:

search for template_main_above in index.template.php and go to the end of it. It should be a single <td> there after which you can put any html code for the ads.

Post.template is not changed for Amber, so you will need to change Post.template of default theme instead.

as for google adsense between logo and forum board, i'm getting errors while doing it. how do you do it exactly?

here's the last part of template_main_above in index.template.php

Quoteecho '</div>

   </td>

         <td valign="top" width="100%" id="bodyarea">';

   }

function template_main_below()

1 - i added my adsense codes under </td> and my adsense went to the very top of the board, even on top of the logo and it was left-justified although i wrapped my codes in <center></center>

2 - i placed the codes after <td valign="top" width="100%" id="bodyarea">'; and I got a "Parse Template" error

3 - i placed the codes right after the " } " and i got another "Parse Template" error

where then and how do i place my adsense codes and how do i center-justify them?

First... Let me say that I LOVE this theme. With that being said... Does anyone know how to fix the following oddball glitch? I've searched as best I could the board coding, support forums, this thread, etc and can't seem to find anything that's relevant.

This is what it looks like normally (please note the yellow highlighted section).

(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fhome.comcast.net%2F%7Esilverhand%2Fglitch1.jpg&hash=d61871e88966ef91402938b3ee63da248e51b476)

After I apply the Amber Theme... I get the x's showing image breaking.

(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fhome.comcast.net%2F%7Esilverhand%2Fglitch2.jpg&hash=0eb0af5a0cfbf87c1b46b6ba818705e773879a39)

I went so far as to even try copying the images folder on top of the images folder in the Amber Theme thinking maybe it was a missing image but it "appears" like some code glitch due to the link is actually missing a url link to the pictures in question.

Any ideas?

Thanks, in advance.

"home" is defined in the language files. You need to search for "home" in index.english.php located in Themes/default/languages..not in the Epsilon theme folder.

As mentioned in PM, you are using it on v1.0.7. Amber are only meant to run on SMF1.1.

Amazing theme really _O_ Finally got the buttons highlighted. It is in fact very easy if you don't forget that $ca== '<insert>' & '?action=<insert> must have the same <insert> and not a different one.

Took me a couple of days to figure it out, damn :P

One other question. When looking in the profile of a member the small menu's on the left are not that pretty. You can see an example of it at this url: http://www.scmforum.nl/index.php?action=mm As you can see the left side of the box that says "warning" is nice and round but the right side just stops. Is there a way of changing that ? Then I can make the profile section a lot prettier :)

Very nice theme Bloc... Thank You ;D

I have one small glitch which I couldn't find any advice for. I am using SMF 1.1 RC2

The sidebar rolls up ok in IE

The side bar rolls up ok in Firefox (1.5.0.6) in your demo on the themes site but not on a site I am setting up.

I can change the sidebar state in IE and return to Firefox and do a refresh and the state changes to that set in IE but I still can't change it in Firefox. It can't be any extensions or it wouldn't work on the demo.

Any ideas?

Hi Bloc
Like a lot of user before me already told you, the theme is awsome. But it gives me a little trouble too. I have the dutch version, but I miss some buttons.

(https://www.simplemachines.org/community/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dewegvanhetmidden.nl%2FSMF%2Findex.php%3Faction%3Ddlattach%3Btopic%3D2.0%3Battach%3D2%3Bimage&hash=756ef2d5ea3ef7667559eb5144a1ed280c10f9db)

Is it possible to get some buttons there or does the theme not provide that?

Thanks for responding :) I seem to have resolved the issue. I logged into my site in Firefox as well as on your demo page in another tab and toggled the sidebar back and forth doing frequent page refreshes on both sites and finally something broke loose. The problem went away after about 3 days of heavy use and hasn't reoccurred.

Would it be feasible to change the logo_left.jpg and logo_right.jpg into gifs with transparency except for the white border? And also something similar to the top of the logo where the transparency gradient is, allowing a photo to stretch all the way to the top white boundary? I haven't had time to look at your code but if you think it can be done I will proceed.

See why I ask at the link below. I would like to fill the logo frame with a photo.

On the other hand, that can't be it. I have seen some sites with this theme that do have the buttons. the problem seems to be that i cannot install te v1.1RC2 version. The detailed versioncontrol says tha my version is 1.1 RC1. Which is not correct, because I downloaded the RC2 en put it in place of the old ambermap in themes in wtp.

So your default theme displays the correct text strings?

About the numbers in the theme, they are not always correct..as long as you pick the right zip file to upload to your site, you should be fine. Overwriting everything old of course.

I am having alignment issues... if you look at the image above, "Members" is too far to the left,
I checked the cs, and it says catbg... I added left padding to this, but it didnt move it at all...

also..I suspect the little members icon should also be moved to the right... any ideas how I can change this? and nudge it over a bit?

Title: Re: [Theme] Amber (SMF v1.1RC1 - v1.1RC2)

This is one of the "quircks" when using SMF inside Joomla - the padding is lost on tables. I think its something defined in the Joomla stylesheet, but not sure what. So defining a padding on catbg suddenly doesn't work - but it does in stand-alone SMF.

The solution..? Well, in the Rocketthemes I converted I used borders-in same color as background and even inline styling to make it work - not ideal at all.

well, after I posted the last message, I managed to figure out a fix... not the best, but atleast it works... what I did was find in the boardindex.template.php  is find where the catbg tables were, and just added two &nbsp; and that seamed to do the trick!
I know its not ideal... but it worked, and ran out of solutions...

have a good day, thanks for your reply!

If you need mods to appear in themes other than the default you'll have to manually install them to Amber.

Hello,

For some reason, one of the bottom boxes on my forum's front page has a wacky sized font; different than everything else on the page.

If you look at the bottom of the page:

http://www.libogroup.com/SMF/index.php

You'll see areas for Calendar, Members, Forum Stats and Users Online. The Forum Stats area is a completely different font size than anything else on the page.

I'm fairly certain this is a boardindex.template.php problem, but my cursory look at that file didn't reveal anything to me that would stand out.

I cannot attach files to this thread, apparently, but I did attach the file to my question over in the general support forum (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=190680.new;topicseen#new)

I'd be grateful if anyone could provide some direction about how I could fix this small problem.

Thanks!

Chris

Hello,

I recently installed Daniel15's mod for integrating flashchat into your site. Everything went well, except, even after making the necessary changes, I cannot get the word "Chat" (or anything like that) to show up in the top menu bar.

My top menu bar did 'make a space' for the word "Chat" to appear (and, if you click on the empty space, it DOES launch chat). I just need to get the word "Chat" to appear in the menu bar.

Here's a link to my site: http://www.libogroup.com/SMF/index.php

I am using the amber theme. Apparently, this question is better served by inquiring with the theme's creator.

If anyone needs me to upload a file, I can do that, as well.

Thanks!

Chris

Hi IchBin,

I followed the instructions provided by Daniel15, in his thread, here:

http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=139769.0

Specifically, after installing the program itself, I used Daniel's mod, then did these steps:

Quote
OK, in Themes/amber11final/index.template.php, find:

if (in_array($_GET['action'],array('search','admin','calendar','profile','mlist','register','login','pm','help')))

Replace with:

if (in_array($_GET['action'],array('search','admin','calendar','profile','mlist','register','login','pm','help','chat')))

Also, find:

// The [calendar]!
if ($context['allow_calendar'])
echo $tab1, $ca== 'calendar' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=calendar">'.$txt['calendar24']. '</a></td>';

Add after:

// FlashChat!
if ($context['user']['is_logged'])
echo $tab1, $ca== 'chat' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=chat">'.$txt['fc_chat']. '</a></td>';

I cannot seem to attach the two files in question: boardindextemplate and indextemplate -- but, I have them downloaded onto my computer, in case there is a way to do that, that I'm unaware of.

As I mentioned, everything works well - I can launch the chat, if I click on the empty space between "calendar" and "logout" -- I just need the word "chat" to appear there.

Thanks!

Chris

The text variable may be empty, or not be installed properly. But you can bypass that just by changing the variable to hard coded text. The only problem with this is that if you use other languages it will still show Chat, and it won't be in their language.
// FlashChat!
if ($context['user']['is_logged'])
echo $tab1, $ca== 'chat' ? '1' : '2' , '"><a href="', $scripturl, '?action=chat">Chat</a></td>';
