Title: SMF Helper
Post by: Bigguy on August 17, 2006, 01:18:31 AM
Well I started a new site. I guess the best way to explain it is this:

I have been using SMF for over 6years now and absolutely love it. I wanted to try to give something back to the community by creating an extra support site for SMF. This is NOT to take away from the community it is to give back to it. I have seen a lot of the other sites around that bear the name SMF and figured that I could create a nice little place to help people out. I didn't figure this was a problem at all.

I realize that I don't by any means have all the answers to every question out there concerning SMF and I don`t claim to. This site here is great and I love being here. I just figured I would start up an EXTRA site I guess to help out a bit more if I can. I hope you all like it and remember I am not trying to take members from here or anything like that. I just wanted to help out a bit more that's all. So with that all said and out of the way, here you go. Any feedback is welcome.

SMF Helper (http://www.smfhelper.com)

Well I was going to join but after several tries with that stupid security code crap ain't gonna bother with any site using it. it is suppose to keep out the bots but guess it stops those of us with vision problems too. What a piece of crap yea it pissed me off.  >:( >:(

I refreshed several times trying to see one I could make out.  :(

Are you referring to Captcha ??? I was having problems with it earlier as well. I guess I`ll take it down. Sorry about this. I will take it down now.
Title: Re: SMFHelper.com
Post by: Polymath on August 19, 2006, 02:33:42 PM
It worked ok for me. If it says you need 8 letters... its the password that does...not the capthca code.

I have the password set to medium security, there's no problem with that is there. ???

Well some folks like it but I have a vision issue and can't see diddly in it. Thought I had escaped that mess when I left IPB and phpBB lol  8) ;)
I have no clue why I can't focus on it. doctors call it some kind of stigmatim or something like that.  :o ::) :-\

I`m sorry to hear that, it doesn`t sound like a good condition to have. I have taken down Captcha for now and will play with it a little later. If you would like to register, please do so. :)

Captcha is a good idea in concept but they need to just fix it for the vision impaired. Stop the bots not the people. lol  8) :D ;)

No sweat. I had seem the Mod posted but had hoped SMF folks had improved upon it for I know it is going to be part of SMF 1.1 RC3. Hopefully as a option.

Thanks  ;D

For some reason many host seem to block or ignore Hotmail and I use it for most all off site forums I join. I have just gotten to the point over the last year if I don't see the activation email in 24 hours I move on. To many have this happen to followup anymore. lol  :D ;)

Very kind of you.  :) ;)

I've noticed the same with my forums and some source emails. Weird!  ::)

Yeah I know what you mean, I don`t use my hotmail to much anymore cause it would randomly drop emails I was supposed to get. Not a real big problem but it is annoying.

Yea I'm slowly moving everything non-site related or family and friend related to Gmail. Hope to have it all transitioned by Jan 2007. Yea taking it slow to make sure nothing or no one is missed.  :) ;)

I have I'd say 10% email AWOL factor with Hotmail for some reason some dose not go to destination and some dose not get to me.  :o :(

Ah yes, when i put those images in instead of using the "Plain" ones I used the "Shadow" ones out of the pack. So that was my fault. I can change them and I will .....but it's a bit of work to do like 30 of them, lol. I was wondering when someone was going to point that out. I will get around to changing them, thanks for pointing it out. :)

UPDATE

Hello, I would like to introduce an addition to the forums of computer support. It has taken the place of the SMF 1.0.7|1.0.8 catagory. We will still however provide support for these versions of SMF if need be but there questions can be directed to the "SMF 1.1RC2/RC3 Support" catagory under the "General Support board"

The reason for this is; after about a month and a half of watching the forums here, it seems as if we are not getting very many hits on those boards. Hopefully with the addition of the new catagory and boards it will become as popular as the other boards on the forum. I feel this is a good expansion of the site and will help us to grow.

I have added some new features to SMF Helper. Not in any particular order here they are:

I have added the arcade mod, the Gallery mod and the links and contacts mod. Also is the new radio mod and some good downloads in the downloads section. Some of these features you must be registered for but come check us out anyway. ;D

*UPDATE*

One more feature that has been added for registered members is a POP-UP t.v. I found a couple code snippets that let you do this. So all in all we now have:

Links
Gallery
Arcade
Contact sheet
radio
Downloads
tv

All of these are either from a modification for SMF or a code snippet for Tiny Portal. Of course there are alot more mods installed like the streaming mod and the ad mod and a whole bunch more.

UPDATE

Just a small update on the site for anyone interested. We have been hard at work over here and will have (soon) a couple packages to be released soon. Also for changes to the site we have installed the Google membermap. We have updated the Radio mod and the T.V. mod to the newest versions. We also have a linux live cd that is about to be released from our site. The alpha version of the cd in iso format and can be downloaded from our site. This is all thanks to one of our Global Moderators that is a wiz at Linux.

There is alot that is going to be happening here soon. A couple of projects will go up for sale and new mods will be released along with advertising space being sold to those who would like to advertise their site. (This is still in the works) Hope to see ya all soon.

NOTE: Also I have a domain name up for sale: easyc.info is what I am going to sell 3 bucks for anyone who would like it.

Meh, your rules were beyond unfair(especially the one about having anime; really, the one about hentai[Should never allow that] is good, but ANY other kind is not allowed? I draw anime, clean appropriate anime, and would be pissed if I had to choose that kind of hosting. All it sounded like was trolling to me.). :D
Title: Re: SMFHelper.info
Post by: Bigguy on May 14, 2010, 10:56:50 AM
The rules about anime and hentia are there to protect peoples copyrighted work. If you can show that it is your work then there is no problem. We will allow it. As for the rest of the rules they are there for our protection as well as yours. Sorry you can't see that. We have many people hosted with us and have never had anyone but you and one other person complain about them. As I said to the last person. Rules can be changed. If there is something you do not agree with bring it to our attention and it very well might get changed. It takes people speaking up though before things can change. :)

As a matter of fact....I have just changed that rule slightly. This should keep both parties happy. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

Hello all. I would like to take this opportunity to tell you all that SMFH (www.smfhelper.com (http://www.smfhelper.com)) is back from the archives. Last year, due to un-forseen circumstances beyond our control we archived the site. It is our belief now that the time is right to re-open our doors and provide the support we were once famous for.

The site it self boasts a nice clean, fast environment with a lot of options for our members. These include a gallery, embedded video and audio, a downloads section and a modification parser. There is more to come but we figured we would take it slow on adding every feature back instead of doing it all at once.

Our Team members are posted for all to see on the Team page and are familiar names. As a team we provide a nice polite quiet environment for you to get support for your SMF, Php, Html, css and site needs. Put together there is years of experience here for you to get the help you need.

SMFH was started on August 11th 2006. It was brought to life with the sole purpose of giving back to the SMF community for all their wonderful support and time dedicated to the production of one of the best forum packages out there. It is in that spirit that we continue on on our journey to help others with there site creation and management.  The SMFH Team hopes to see you soon. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Just a short update and not entirely about the site. Although it is running smooth. SMFH has revived the Audible PM mod and it can be found here (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=454) on the mod site and at  of course. Any beta releases of this mod or the cbi mod will be released on SMFH first and then will be moved to the mod site here. Thank you, that's all I wanted to say for now. :)

SMF Helpers is proud to give notice of a new version of Forum Firewall coming out soon. You will be able to download it at our site very soon. As I said this is just a notice of what is to come. Here is a statement from the mod author:

QuoteNew stuff as follows:

  • Robot User Agents were updated for the robots.tst test.  The top UA's are now in the list.  Yes, before anyone asks Yahoo is gone!  MIf you want these UA's you will need to deleter the old DB entries during uninstall or manually install them.
  • Added easter egg to ban bots scans.  Hidden in the SMF code is ann easter egg.  If a bot or hacker tries to run this function the attempt will be logged and the visitor immediately banned via the SMF system.  Owners of custom themes will need to edit code for this feature.
  • Updated SQL injection list.

And much much more. Please read the entire new features and bug fixes list
This should be out within the next week if all goes well. Please stop by and check it out. :)

I'm glad the support community is branching out. SMF does, without a doubt, have the best community of all the forum softwares.

Bigguy, what happened to your old database? Member and post count seems new.
Title: Re: SMF Helper
Post by: Bigguy on September 12, 2013, 02:20:21 PM
I still have the old database but I wanted a fresh start. With 2.1 coming out and the eol for 1.0 and all that I figured it was time for a fresh start.
Title: Re: SMF Helper
Post by: Bigguy on September 12, 2013, 02:21:15 PM
The old site was dead, plus I am back on the original url so I wanted to give it a new look.
Title: Re: SMF Helper
Post by: Mick. on September 12, 2013, 02:23:58 PM
Right on. Fresh starts are hard man, especially with established forums/websites.

But I see why since you're using 2.1 ;)

Bold and gutsy move tho
Title: Re: SMF Helper
Post by: Bigguy on September 12, 2013, 02:28:38 PM
Yeah it was a bit bold I admit that. The site is going to be around for sometime so hopefully that will lend to its stability. Along with that, SMF Helper itself has a very good reputation for support and community involvement. The community part of course has to be built back up a but but that will come I hope.

I've been playing with SMF a bit and css3....not much but just tryin things out. Can anyone tell me if when you mouse over the 4 images on the front page they rotate using IE. It works in FF but not sure why IE doesn't pick it up.

In IE8 they do not (but it is expected, IE8 has no idea what CSS3 is :P )
Title: Re: SMF Helper
Post by: Bigguy on September 23, 2013, 10:25:53 AM
They didn't work in IE10 either, hmmm. More playin is in order I guess. Thanks for checkin that.

not tested but have you tried to target IE -ms-transform: rotate();
depending on how much you want this to work on all browsers take a look at sandpaper

Title: Re: SMF Helper
Post by: Bigguy on September 23, 2013, 05:23:35 PM
Thanks for that...doesn't look like it works though. What is sandpaper. ??

I said I wasn't going to do this but I did. I restored SMF Helper back to it's original state. it's back on the original url with the original database. Unfortunately, anyone who signed up on the recently installed SMF Helper has lost their accounts. I think it was only 5 or 6 though. To those few, please feel free to sign up again.

Hi Bigguy,

I like your site.

What I don't understand about your forum and by the way this forum too is why friendly URLs are not used.

Perhaps I am missing something but if you were better indexed on search engines you would be able to reach - and therefore help - more people.

Just my 2 cents!
Title: Re: SMF Helper
Post by: Arantor on September 28, 2013, 06:50:31 PM
Because friend URLs don't actually help being indexed. The friendly URLs are generated from the topic titles and the number of people here, at least, who put in titles like just 'Help' mean that there would be no meaningful URLs in it.

Note that SMF does not offer particularly friendly URLs to start with.

I agree about the "help" titles, that's why they should be discouraged, but having titles in URLs does help getting better indexed.

Just as an example the "what verson of SMF is better?" thread I have read @ smfhelper.com

However it is not my intention to hijack this thread so I'll leave it here.

@Bigguy

I like your site and it seems to be on a roll already :)

I would get "Helping you along the way" aligned with the title though.
Title: Re: SMF Helper
Post by: Arantor on September 28, 2013, 07:06:02 PM
I don't want to argue with you but there is far more evidence to support the fact that having titles in URLs does not help better indexing.
Title: Re: SMF Helper
Post by: Bigguy on September 28, 2013, 10:24:51 PM
Before SMF Helper was closed and the url lost, the google ranking for this site was up there with this site. If you searched google for anything to do with help for SMF, the two sites that would be up top was mine and this one. After a lot of changing the url and redirects in various places due to circumstances beyond my control I now have what is known as a dead site. it is going to take a lot to build it up again but I will. One way or the other. :)

Btw, I'm glad you like it. :)

Your logo header would benefit from some antialising against the BG - the edges look jagged.

Neat front page though :)

Read the first post (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=106591.0) in this thread for info on why the site was put up.

It's been awhile since the site was around so go easy on me please.  :)

Also, it will be updated soon. I know this should be posted on my site but I just came across this now, so I will post it here. I can not give a time line on anything and must apologize to members of SMFH for my prolonged absence. A few things have happened/are happening and it's been a bit difficult to get through but I am still around. I want to publicly thank all SMFH members that offered their help to me over the past little while. It is greatly appreciated. I'll be back on the site soon. Thanks all. :)

It's good to see a site dedicated towards helping other SMF users. I've found your site a few times now by searching google - looking for certain theme edits.

Your site design reminds me of Windows XP, well a shell I used to have to style the OS more.

PS. I joined [chrisB] but I haven't received a verification code (tried multiple times).
