Title: Anonymous Posting Mod
Post by: winrules on August 18, 2006, 01:46:30 PM
Link to Mod (http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=410)

This mod will add an option to either just ask for a name when a guest posts, or not ask for an e-mail or name. You can change the option in Features and Settings.

Hey there - I'm quite new to SMF forum software...
I tried to install your mod but got this:
Quote
Database Error

File:
Line:

What am I doing wrong?  ::)

When do you get that error?

I like to have an area where unregistered users can post / ask questions / leave comments... but i would not allow it on the whole board. I think this has the potential for a great mod if you would do it Board specific, let us know as soon as it is, I am willing to test-run it :)

Is the feature you mean" Allow users to edit their displayed name?" in the Basic forum settings. This is already there.
Can I force users to change their names to "Mary"?
Title: Re: Anonymous Posting Mod
Post by: URPG on February 21, 2007, 04:19:35 AM
Anonymous posting is posting without first registering with and e-mail and blabla and simply post without an account. I think this is very useful for support boards, but since i don't want anonymous posts anywhere all over the forum I would wait for it to be "localized" to certain boards... or i will have to make all boards invisible to guests to prevent them from posting, thats stupid :(

Nice mod, thanks! To anyone asking again, it's in:

Features and Options / Basic Features ->
'Require E-Mail and Name for guest posting?'

I had trouble finding it as well, maybe it should go in the doc file.

Thanks for the tip. Found the option after a lot of headache,

But one thing is bad,

I've seen on one other forum (phpbb) where you can post (as a member) an anonynous post .
It was an topic (yes just one topic) where you could post a message for deleting, removing and so on without the others knowing who you are.
So, even being a member, you could post a topic completly anonymously.
Is that possible to make in smf to? Suppose it is, but if there is someone to do it is something different.

Thanks once ogain for the great forum software...

Agreed on the board-specific.

I'd love to have ONE board where people could post anonymously. But not the whole forum.

It's working great to allow any guest to post in a specific area, but disallow guests posting links. I had 2 spam messages within 10 minutes after allowing guests to post and non within the following couple of weeks, where guests were not allowed to post links. I'd say that's the easiest way to make it work... unless this mod becomes board-specific.

Works great with SMF 1.1.4 and TP with the Delber MC theme.

As for it being board-specific, we have two special boards for guest only.
This mod works great with just them two boards without having to do any extra.

Thanks!!

For me as well, there is no "Require E-Mail and Name for guest posting" option in the basic tab in Features and Options.

I've had the same problem as some of you. I'm from Holland so I set the language of the board to Dutch and I wasn't able to find such a setting, then I changed the boardlanguage back to English and then there was the "Require E-Mail and Name for guest posting"option available. After I enabled it I set the language back to Dutch and it still worked.
So for those who have the problem and have changed the language of the board, try setting the language back to English.

I was happy with this mod as it does what it says it will do, however, it got to be where a certain spammer was using it to post highly objectionable material to my forum.  So, I set guests permissions to deny them the ability to reply to topics, which is what this person was doing to get his stuff up.  Topic creation by guests has always been denied.

Trouble is, when logging in as a guest, even after denying them the permission to reply to topics, the reply tab still comes up next to the print tab on the reply entry field.  When clicking on this reply tab as a guest, the anonymous posting mod fields of name and email still come up.  Attempting to get around this in an effort to deny guests any avenue to reply in the forum, I used the package parser to uninstall the anonymous posting mod.  I followed the deletions and additions it mandated very, very carefully and exactly.  I made sure I saved the changes on each alteration.

But the mod is still showing on my browse packages list.  And when entering the forum again as a guest, the same name and email fields come up when the reply button is clicked.  Checking the uninstall option in the browse packages section of my admin panel brings up now that all test failed (which to my limited knowledge would indicate that my changes with the package parser did delete something).

Any ideas anyone?  I have only VERY basic knowledge of this stuff so if you reply to this, please speak to me in the simplest of terms avoiding any code jargon as it will probably be unintelligible to me.

Thanking anyone in advance,

Martin Howell

Is it possible to have a mod so you can either have the default to be anonymous and you choose if you want to use your user name (like it currently is) or for the default to be your user name and you can choose to be anonymous?

Hello, Sorry for bumping a year old topic but I have installed this mod on version 1.1.9  and am having the same problems as others finding the
('Require E-Mail and Name for guest posting?') Message.

Also what doc. file should I be looking in to see if it's showing up in there.

Sorry for being such a noob.

And thank you for all your help.

In case anybody is still experiencing the "Require E-Mail and Name for guest posting?" not showing, the changing language method works.
for example: Try going from English to English-UTF8.

i actually figured this one out, but...

and it appears this mod doesnt get many views but...

when a spammer does post on my site, (links are disallowed as guests/anonymous)

i have two questions:

1) how would one go about 'allowing' certain links ie trusted sites like youtube, google video, etc, with these restrictions

2) when we know its spam, in order to ban that posters ip address, you have to open two windows, or run circles trying to open the ban section in the admin, and as well capturing the ip address.

how can this process be streamlined when banning anonymous posters?
