Title: Help I am a newbie idiot!

I am using a custom template on http://www.courselines.com/forum   and I want to do two things:

1. I want to add a menu link to a url in the main menu on top.
2. I want to add the extension in this template, specifically the ad banners mod.

How do I get these things to work without switching to the defaul template?
