Title: [Theme] Chat Bubbles
Post by: spaceant on June 20, 2004, 05:41:34 PM
My first post, and I hope to start off with a bang :D

Half inspired by an unrelated project I was working on, and half inspired by Joseph Fung's Comic theme, the Chat Bubbles theme was born.

Many of the images were replaced (I've made custom buttons, post icons, etc for this theme). These images may NOT be used outside of this theme without my permission and/or depositing $800 kajillion billion septillion US Dollars into my Paypal account. (In the event of the latter, be sure to include your mailing address so that I can send you a free T-Shirt)

Some things to note:

[EDIT]: The list feature is broken >:( !
- Some options/features are not used on my site (such as karma, etc), so may not be tested with this theme. If it breaks the theme, let me know and I'll see what I can do to fix it.
- The buttons have a shadow effect, and as a result, use a matte color of #999966. This makes changing the .titlebg or .catbg background colors rather cumbersome, so I suggest you keep the ugly brown color :P
- User signatures are NOT shown to preserve the look of the chat.
- Thanks goes to [email protected] for the member stars images.
- Thanks goes to SMF team for any images not replaced.
- Refer to this post (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=11481.0) on how to install the theme.

suggestions for using this theme:
- use inline links for the navigation menu
- set a limit on avatar size

If there any questions/comments/concerns, please drop me a line at [email protected]. Now onto the screenshots!

edit: what lang and theme files you changed? They are all there now, they dont need to. Just changed ones .

Post by: spaceant on June 20, 2004, 06:38:43 PM
Thanks for the feedback :)

I *think* the only file i changed was Settings, but I'll need to double check to be sure. I'll update the zip file later and remove the extraneous lang files.

Also, I can't say I've tested the installation of the theme too much.. can some people let me know if it installs ok? Thanks!

How about theme files, what you have changed? Same goes to them ;)
Title: Re: [Theme] Chat Bubbles
Post by: spaceant on June 20, 2004, 06:46:06 PM
wow that's a tougher question... I'll need to check the timestamp of the files to be sure. It will make for a smaller file for sure...

How about the javascript and the css files? (fonts-compat.css, script.js) If those are unchanged, can I delete them too?

Gah, sorry, I put my own version of index.template.php into the zip instead of the generic one :-\

Fixed now, sorry about that >:(

That was also cool theme :D

Suggestions:

Remove fonts-compat.css.  That file only needs to be in the default theme. (by default, of course.)
Remove all the js files.  By default, unless you've changed the paths to them, those files only need to be in the default theme.
Also the same for wireless.css.
Ask for translations, if possible, so your theme can be more internationalizable.  Wouldn't it be cool to see it used on a Japanese forum?
Login template looks to be stock; it would be best to remove this template so your theme will be more likely to work in later versions.

As well, I recommend you look for a good file compare program - I recommend diff, WinDiff, or ConTEXT.  This will help you compare the files for differences (easier than timestamp imho..) and keep up with any changes made in RC1. (there are a lot, trying to get them out of the way for post-RC.)

This is similar to a theme I saw running on a PhpBB board - only this one is much MUCH better.

Brilliant theme :)

Thanks for the comments all!

Unknown: I've removed the mentioned files, thanks for the input. I usually use Textpad (which has a built-in file comparison tool), but I thought I would be lazy and get away with just comparing timestamps. Well, you proved me wrong when I included an unchanged Login.template.php :-X

The file has been updated to include some more new graphics, bug fixes, removal of some unneeded files.
Also, if anyone is willing to do translations, send me a PM, but I'd likely wait for RC1 before doing translations.

Thanks again all!

I removed signatures because I felt it wouldn't work well with the theme (It would shrink the chat bubbles too much with signatures on both sides of it) If you wanted to put them back in, you'd need to modify Display.template.php and add it to $posterData, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Hey spaceant.. just wanted to thank you for such an awesome theme. It works perfectly with the youth site that I'm putting it on (even the colors match  :D)... the default forum setups are just way too "adult" for these kids.. the bubblechat works cos its so much hipper 8) Just wondering though, i saw your forum on your site and if you not too much of a hassle, i'd like to ask for some pointers on how you enclosed your whole forum within a table/graphic like on your site? I know my HTML but not much PHP coding (and this is the first time that I've dabbled with a BB), but if you can direct me to the exact file(s) that i need to dig into, it'd be much appreciated.  :)
Title: Re: [Theme] Chat Bubbles
Post by: spaceant on June 30, 2004, 09:03:35 PM
Jeps,

I'm glad you enjoy the theme! The file you want is index.template.php, and the function you wish to edit is template_main_above(). I *think* it begins around line 47. All that stuff between the echo '...' calls should be familiar as HTML.

You just need to find the place where you want to enclose your forum into a table. The easiest way I've found to do this to view the source of your forum, find out where you would insert HTML code, then look for that spot and insert it into index.template.php.

For my forum, the table went right before the

// The logo and the three info boxes

section of template_main_above(). Make sure you close the table also. If you're enclosing the whole forum in a table, you'll probably need to close the table in template_main_below().

Some things to watch out for..
- Any HTML code you insert should probably be inside echo '...'
- If you need single quotes, you'll want to escape them, like so:

echo 'Here it\'s an escaped single quote!';

PM me if you need any more help, good luck with your forum ;)

Btw, is your youth site online? PM me a link if it is, I'd be interested in seeing how my theme works out on other people's website :D

Sorry, I just got back from my vacation a couple of days ago. I've fixed the Karma problem, Karma works fully in Instant Messages and in posts now. Just redownload the zip file on the first page of this thread and upload it into the chatbubbles theme directory.

Please let me know if there are any other problems, enjoy!

I was gonna ask if there was a way to add signatures to posts, but I already found it, and I understand that it might not look as good with the signatures in there.

But, how about, maybe in the next update(If there is a next updates), could you add an option in there that will allow anyone(Admins or users) to turn signatures on or off?

That would be awesome if you could do that.

Anyways... excellent and really well thought out theme, by far one of the best themes I've ever seen, works REALLY well with my City of Heroes SG!

Thanks!

Wow... that'll be along time off. lol :(

Already, someone mentioned why their signature isn't showing up on my CoH forum.

If I did want to add that feature, you said something about a file... would you be able to go into detail, please?
Title: Re: [Theme] Chat Bubbles
Post by: spaceant on August 04, 2004, 09:18:23 PM
Ok, ok... Go back to the first page of this thread, and redownload the theme. I've updated my theme with various bugfixes, improvements, etc, so it's worth it to redownload anyway.

By default, signatures are OFF, as I think it looks a lot nicer without it. If you insist on using signatures, I have provided the means to include it in this version. Here's what you have to do:

1.) Open Display.template.php in a text editor. (For example, Windows' notepad)
2.) Look for the line

$showSignatures = false;

This can be found on the 6th line, from the top, of the file.
3.) Simple change the value false to true, upload all the files into your chatbubbles Theme directory, and viola!
4.) Optional: Kindly send me a link to your website using this theme. I like seeing how people are using it  ;D
5.) Enjoy!

Here's the fix for the smilies:

In post.template.php, at line 542, replace

foreach ($context['smileys'] as $smiley_row)
{
foreach ($smiley_row as $smiley)

with

foreach ($context['smileys']['postform'] as $smiley_row)
{
foreach ($smiley_row['smileys'] as $smiley)

Hello spaceant,

two tips

a) upschrink work not on my site, a has the code in your template

<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"><!--
var current_header = ', empty($options['collapse_header']) ? 'false' : 'true', ';

function shrinkHeader(mode)
{';

// Guests don't have theme options!!
if ($context['user']['is_guest'])
echo '
document.cookie = "upshrink=" + (mode ? 1 : 0);';
else
echo '
fetchById("upshrinkTemp").src = "', $scripturl, '?action=jsoption;var=collapse_header;val=" + (mode ? 1 : 0) + ";sesc=', $context['session_id'], ';" + (new Date().getTime());';

echo '
fetchById("upshrink").src = smf_images_url + (mode ? "/upshrink2.gif" : "/upshrink.gif");

fetchById("upshrinkHeader").style.display = mode ? "none" : "";

current_header = mode;
}
// --></script>

changed to

<script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"><!--
var current_header = ', empty($options['collapse_header']) ? 'false' : 'true', ';

function shrinkHeader(mode)
{';

// Guests don't have theme options!!
if ($context['user']['is_guest'])
echo '
document.cookie = "upshrink=" + (mode ? 1 : 0);';
else
echo '
document.getElementById("upshrinkTemp").src = "', $scripturl, '?action=jsoption;var=collapse_header;val=" + (mode ? 1 : 0) + ";sesc=', $context['session_id'], ';" + (new Date().getTime());';

echo '
document.getElementById("upshrink").src = smf_images_url + (mode ? "/upshrink2.gif" : "/upshrink.gif");

document.getElementById("upshrinkHeader").style.display = mode ? "none" : "";

current_header = mode;
}
// --></script>

an it works fine.

2) in your template you have hardcodet grafik, thats gives traffic on yours caress ;)

td.topleft { background-image: url("http://www.spaceant.net/images/layout/top_left.jpg"); background-repeat: no-repeat; }
td.top { background-image: url("http://www.spaceant.net/images/layout/top.jpg"); background-repeat: repeat-x; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: bold; color: #FFFFFF; }

td.rightcompact { background-image: url("http://www.spaceant.net/images/layout/right_compact.jpg"); background-repeat: repeat-y; }
td.bottomleft { background-image: url("http://www.spaceant.net/images/layout/bottom_left.jpg"); background-repeat: no-repeat; }
td.bottom { background-image: url("http://www.spaceant.net/images/layout/bottom.jpg"); background-repeat: repeat-x; }

@charpress:

QuoteI have the same smilies problem, but that line of my Post.template.php is:

foreach ($context['smileys'] as $smiley_row)
   {
      foreach ($smiley_row as $smiley)

Yes, that's correct.  You should replace that code with

foreach ($context['smileys']['postform'] as $smiley_row)
  {
    foreach ($smiley_row['smileys'] as $smiley)

Fun Theme!....I read all the posts here and unless I missed it, I am wondering how I can get me header not to expand out more than 100% of the page width.  My main table seems to be a little shy of 100% but the header is about 110%.  I am using IE 6.0.

WOW.......just ran site in Mozilla and it works perfect, must be some code in the template that is screwing up IE?

My site is at LINKS NEWS (http://linksnews.com)

Thanks for any help

I can't get this one installed.  It says "That theme directory doesn't exist, or doesn't contain a theme!"  The directory is there.

Nevermind.  I got it.

No wonder I can't get this to work correctly.  I thought this was set for RC1.

Are you going to make this work for RC1?

Nope, that didn't work either Horseman.  Maybe I'll uninstall this puppy and download a fresh copy of Chatbubbles.  After loading a few of these themes up, my whole system feels unstable now. Hopefully I won't have to start from scratch with SMF.

Also, my SMF board won't accept my password unless I click the 'LOGIN' link first.

I set just one of my forums to default to the Chat Bubbles theme. This is a forum that is very appropriate to the theme. It is interesting to see the comments of the users. Some didn't like it, so I explained how to set their own defaults with their profiles. Most users liked the theme very much. Take a look at www.la-legal.com/forum (http://www.la-legal.com/forum) for an example of setting just one forum to a different theme than the main body and the rest of the forums. I kind of like doing it this way. The forum that is set to the Chat Bubbles theme is the Chit-Chat forum.

SM makes setting different themes for different forums very easy once you stumble on how to do it.

You actually have to go to Manage Boards from your admin panel and once there, you can modify each forum's theme. Just click on "Modify" next to whichever board you want to be different from your main theme. Setting a theme for an individual board will override the default theme. If a user does not like the theme, and if you have given permission in your settings for the user to specify the default theme, the user can choose to go back to whatever your board's default theme is set to.

Hi, Experts, hope you awake for supporting bubblechat

Just have had downloaded and installed SMF RC1 and ChatBubbles theme.

after first making mistake under adminaccount loading the new theme, instead I did "copy the default, as theme 1" (but this also didnt create new folder, so it is compl. useless :o) - then I found the way to give the full path and install.  getting message "successfully". nice, grat.

then chosing that chatbubble them (I also put the ...info...xml into it, as it was not there) just ist causing another greenish colord "upfolder button", then the theme remains default one.

Anyone knows wahr to do? and why so much other people didnt have that problem?   ???

Just a quick heads up that what you're calling 'forums' here are officially 'boards' as far as SMF is concerned. No big deal, but it'll certainly help if folk understand and use a consistent terminology. :)

That doesn't sound too hard to fix. Just remove it and try it again.  Make sure you have all the files in the chatbubbles folder on your server and when you install it, delete the theme 1 thing.  It's happened to me during my trial and error period of installing themes.
