Title: Avatar Maker Mod
Post by: TechnoDragon on January 01, 2007, 07:00:10 PM
Anyone who knows about Gaia online knows about their avatars...well, a lot of searching on the net produced nearly worthless results towards adding a similar feature to a forum or a website for that matter.  After a lot of searching I came acrros but one version on the net but it was done with javascript with all of the files that actually made it work housed on another site...again...worthless in the long run.

So...I decided to create my very own version that I WILL distribute freely on the net...

Currently you can see the fruits of my labor here:

http://avatar.dragontalk.net

This is the standalone version for anyone who wants to add this to their website...

Currently I am now in the process of making this a MOD for SMF...while I have the basic page and link set up with the permissions to allow or not people to see and use it, i have several other functions/permissions that I plan on implementing when I am done...
currently this is at version 1.0...
     Future version hope to have the following abilities:
     - Save the avatar to profile when finished instead of as an image and then upload to your profile manually.
     - A Full admin panel to add/remove/edit items
     - The Ability for members to go back and change their avatars they have already made OR create a new one (see next option)
     - Ability to restrict the number of avatars that any one member can make similar to limiting the number of PMs a member can receive.
     - Integrate with the shop (if installed) so that members can use points they earn on the purchase of their avatar and various items
     - Any other ideas brought to my attention...
This was/has/is a major project and I want anyone's input on layout or features if you have them....

Those of you who have made the prerequisite number of posts and are registered at this forum (http://dragontalk.net) can see the progress of the integrated version by clicking here (http://dragontalk.net/index.php?action=avatar).

so here's an update on where I am...
     Created own Admin Category
     Ability to add items to database
     Ability to edit items
     Ability to delete items
     Permissions to use the Maker
     Permission to admin the Maker

Now, if I may say so, it has turned out to be a very slick inteface I have coded.  Here are some screen shots attached.

Now that the hardest part (for me at least) of the admin interface is complete, I am going to now add some additional permissons and add some integration to the SMFShop (if it is installed).

Here is a list of what I plan to do:
     - Integrate the maker with the shop (if installed) to the extent to have users use their credits to purchase the items to make their avatar.
     - Ability to save the avatar image directly to the members profile
     - Ability to edit already created avatar once saved to profile
     - Additional Permissions to allow users to create more than one avatar and have those avatars available to choose from if they want to edit it in the maker
     - Ability to set the max number of avatars a member can make based on their membergroup
     - There is another person helping me by creating a "switching mod" to allow users to select from their created avatars to show either globally or by post or topic.

If anyone has any suggestions let me know as I am very interested in your opinions!  Also, there are some minor coding issues I am having difficulty figuring out so any help there would be beneficial as well.

OH, for the tp part I will be coming up with code for blocks to allow you to show the most recently created avatar, total avatars created, most popular items used...etc...

Lastly, I will be taking the standalone version down to prepare it for release to the general public.

Just wanted to update everyone on how this mod is turning out...

available:
     - Membergroup access permission
     - Admin access permission
     - Delete Items from database (bug corrected)
     - Add items to database
     - Edit Item information
     - Admin Ability to delete created avatars not being used by members
     - Setting to restrict the amount of avatars that can be made
     - Setting to turn on/off the ability for member to save to profile
     - Upload avatars direct to profile
     - Now when the member goes to the maker each time and selects a gender it clears any previously set items to eliminate the problem with having the opposite genders items.
     - I have begun the process of shop integration...right now all there is are fields on the maker that will show how much you have on hand and how much the total cost of the avatar will be. Also all fields and functions specific to the shop will disappear when the "Shop Enabled" feature is turned on in the admin settings.
     - Integrate with the forum shop (if available on a particular forum)
     - When a member creates an avatar and deletes it, if they spent any forum points to create it they are given back the full cost of their avatar (I may make an admin setting to decide on a percentage of the cost...but haven't decided that yet) Decided and implemented!

What I plan to do:
     - Allow members to modify an already created avatar rather than make a whole new one
     - Tiny Portal Blocks to show information like number of avatars created, most recent avatar, most popular item, gender ratio
     - An external mod is being worked to go with this that will allow users to do several things with their avatars among these:
          - Drop-down menu to choose which avatar to use in each topic/board

Actually no, I am not that good at graphics.  I am on the lookout for a good artist to make some original images...

im liking this idea......   but one other thing i would like to see, is the ability that uploaded avatars also be saved to the main avatar base. under the category users avatars or something.. hhmm maybe i will request this as a mod.

Already a step ahead of you there!

All avatars ARE saved to a directory withing the SMF avatars folder, so, yes, theoretically other members COULD use avatars that have been made!

Ahhh, i think you have the wrong idea about this mod then...it allows people to create their own avatars from scratch...it has nothing to do with people uploading avatars to the forum.

well, luckily I have found someone who can draw...he's really good, but we're working on the size of the images...he's never done anything this small (image size) before.

Ok, an update:

Currently we are officially at 1.1b3 and seem to have the install package issue resolved...made several bugfixes as well.  HOPEFULLY this is a sign that we will start making some real progress!  just wanted to take a moment to update everyone and to say thank you to all of the beta testers and bloc for all of the help!

Interestingly enough, I've been working on an avatar maker for one of my sites - though it is not currently attached to any forum. It's a simple drag and drop page where people can dress up their character, add a background and then save as a .gif. Members can then use the avatar/doll in forums and MSN... etc.

My props are based on the candybar style dollmakers.  I'd be very interested in your mod, but I would probably want to add my own props and bases, as well as adjust the image sizes and positioning.

I also have a spare SMF forum for trying things out (hidden in a subdomain) so if you still need a couple of beta testers, I'll give it a shot.  :)

Well, glad to see people are still watching this topic...we are currently at beta 7 (don't ask, lots of bugs cropped up *sigh*)

The images and sizez are not a problem as that is exactly what I intended.  You can adjust the image size in the admin panel both initial and final and it can have any images in it to make your avatar you want.

It has been fully integrated within the smf environment with a bbc code and everything...

It's a great thing you're doing, indeed. ^^ I just tested it in v 1.1.1 of SMF, and everything worked fine, until...
Avatar images do not save properly. When it is saved, all we can see is a blank space. :(

I'd love it if this was fixed, but take your time. I am going to use it sometime, but with my own pixel art.

Thanks for finally providing the feature I was looking for! ^^

Sure! Let me set it up in a moment. Thank you. :)

(The forums are new. I just installed my website in a new host. So the skin is default. All I can say is that I installed Tiny Portal. For some reason the SMF shop 3.0 is not working there, so I could not test the Avatar Maker's compatibility with it.)

Title: Re: Avatar Maker Mod
Post by: perplexed on February 13, 2007, 06:23:56 AM
oh I had a question I forgot to ask yesterday.

In the regular avatar settings in the admin panel, you can set the max avatar height and width sizes.  How does this affect your mod as I noticed it also had size options?  So which one takes precedence?
Title: Re: Avatar Maker Mod
Post by: TechnoDragon on February 13, 2007, 08:25:03 AM
The first size setting is the actual image size.  i.e. you create a group of images for the maker and their physical size is say 100x100, that would be what you put in there.

the second set of size values is if you say want to have visually a bigger avatar size on the pages, but you want the actual avatar that shows up in posts a different size, that is what you would put there.

So for instance.  The base image size for the starter images I give with the Avatar Maker is 120wx150h which may look good visually, but in the forum most people can't show more than 100w, so I put 100wx125h so that the final image size will fit in the posts better.

I hope this explains it better
Title: Re: Avatar Maker Mod
Post by: perplexed on February 13, 2007, 08:27:18 AM
ok thanks Technodragon, I just wondered as I have my forum avatar setting at 100x100 so I wondered what would happen with your mod avatar settings
Title: Re: Avatar Maker Mod
Post by: TechnoDragon on February 13, 2007, 08:28:56 AM
it "should" take precedence, (the general avatar size settings) if it does not, just change the avatar maker final size to fix it.

A little update to the maker...
http://dragontalk.net/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item91
This adds a new feature to the maker and fixes a couple of bugs, all you have to do is overwrite the corresponding files on your server.

I tried to install avatar maker 1.1 final which I DL'ed from your site TD but I got this error when trying to install:

Installing this package will perform the following actions:
   Type    Action    Description
1.    Execute Modification    -    Modification parse error
2.    Extract Tree    ./Sources/avatarmaker
3.    Extract Tree    ./avatars/forumAvatars
4.    Extract Tree    ./Themes/default/images
5.    Extract File    ./Sources/Avatar.php
6.    Extract File    ./Sources/AvatarAdmin.php
7.    Extract File    ./Themes/default/Avtr.template.php
8.    Extract File    ./Themes/default/AvtrAdmin.template.php
9.    Extract File    ./Themes/default/pngfix.js
10.    Extract File    ./Themes/default/languages/Avtr.english.php
11.    Execute Code    avtr_install.php

I see on the 2nd page of this topic someone had the same error and you asked if they had the shop installed, but they havent replied.  I have the shop installed. any ideas?

For some reason the xml parser has stopped working for the install in my package...I have been trying to track down the cause, but it is happening so sparingly that I haven't been able to pin it down yet....I will seee what I can do later this week when I get a bit more time...

 This looks to be an excellent idea...I have a few issues to report that prevent me from installing and trying it as yet though:

I run SMF 1.1.2, php5.2.1, shop mod installed.

avtrmkr_final.xml needs an alteration to one line to fix a bug if the shop mod is installed (or if any of a good number of other mods are installed as they all make the same problem occur): Line 91

         'pm' => array(

Change to:

'pm' => array(

The first code is OK if on a clean install with no other mods in place but it tends to go wrong when other mods have modified the file...shop mod for instance.

Might it be better to put the modification after:

   $permissionList = array(
      'membergroup' => array(
         'general' => array(
            'view_stats' => false,
            'view_mlist' => false,
            'who_view' => false,
            'search_posts' => false,
            'karma_edit' => false,
         ),

...so as to side-step the issue?

The database changes fail for me...avtr_install.php fails to run...hence my being unable to test the rest of the mod (yes I know I could use phpMyAdmin...but that's not really what testing a packaged mod should be about IMHO.)

Thanks for your hard work and I hope the above bug report is of use to you.

I'll look into changing the search criteria for the pm array...I think there was a good reason for me using that one for the search so I will relook at it...

that's the first time anyone has said anything about a problem with the install.php file for it...i'll see if I can duplicate it so I can try to fix that

Thank you TrueSatan for the info

Perplexed have you looked at the files to modify them manually or to give the install file a new section to look for in the file you have a fail on. Typically just modding the install file will fix the issue.

The mod was pretty complete when I was helping him beta test and he has spent a TON of time on this so he may be taking a break.

Where exactly is your error ??

If there is a way to attach the related files so I can look at them I am sure there is a fix to be found. I just need to see the file in question and the install files.

what really sucks is that I used to have this mod working on my site...until the server crashed!  Since I helped co-write a lot of the code on this mod, I'm going to see if I can get in contact with Technodragon and get the code.  I'd like to get it compatible with version 2.0.

Strange, seems like the avtr_categories table isn't being created correctly. The query gives me an error (#1067 - Invalid default value for 'catDescS' ) if I try to manually run it.

Does your mySQL user have CREATE database rights?  I just ran the install on a new SMF and had no problems.

Mine I tested on had full permissions.

MySQL version problem? I tried running the queries manually, and it popped up an error (can't recall what anymore) about it not liking some type.

I made all tables manually.

Now, when I save my avatars to my profile, I just get a empty image :S

Sorry for the delay.  I know when I installed the mod, I had to manually upload the forumAvatars directory and the avatarmaker directories into my forum directory by hand.  This is where all the images are stored.  Although, I think in the final release, I'm not sure if all the images were included or not.

Please let me know, so I'll know what else I've gotta fix.

In short, I haven't.
I've been considering trying to get it to work when I had the chance. Unfortunately, that hasn't come. Plus I'm a PHP noob. When I saw so much had changed, I got a little intimidated.

I've been able to install it on 1.1.7, however, I think there's a permissions issue somewhere.  For one, even as Admin, I'm not seeing the Avatar menu (to the left of Admin where it should be), and two, on the Manage Permissions screen, the two text titles for the permissions are not there.  I think this is a key that will at least enable the MOD to work.

ya i found a file of it. TYVM VBG! read thats its okay to re-release... but wanted to make sure with dragon 100%... and also get some notes, he had his own style of coding like everyone which may be confusing to others. anyways having this is better then nothing.. >< but the over 200 items i made for this are not in the file ;/ ... its all good im making a group for the gfx of this thing too.

I know you sow this post vbgamer, but to those who havent and are interest in helping bring this back to life:

Updating the mod for 1.1.x and 2.0.x
Made a couple changes mainly to the installer and uninstaller.
Better MySQL support added use SMF's native functions and updated the schema.
Removed the code to drop tables/data from the uninstall never a big fan of that since don't  want users loosing data.
Minor html updates/bug fixes.

There is a lot I want to change/improve.

Attached the latest version for SMF 1.1.x and after that will port it over to 2.0
