Title: [Theme] xtSMF for SMF (1.0 - 1.0.3)
Post by: A.M.A on August 11, 2004, 01:06:14 AM
xtSMF Theme!

Samples

Download

Notes
1. the buttons and tags as well as the theme itself are free as long as you use them with SMF!!
2. the menu is a hot-spot-map image , so it is always shown ,  the spots work as buttons , if you have the right permission they are clickable if you do not they are not.
3. in the 'images' folder you will find 'xtLOGO.gif' which you can replace it with your own logo.
4. the menu design was inspired by 'enshad.net'.

Very nice looking - kudos to the use of the templating system! (although still only the index template mainly...)

How do I change my theme while looking at this forum back to the default?
Somehow I've been changed completely to this style while looking at anything on this forum.

Btw, I think it looks a bit better with Babylonking's Pro SMF buttonset (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=7405.0)

No, it didn't, I just wasn't sure if I missed a license or something somewhere :)

Thanks for the compliment.  I didn't do anything but remove the calendar link and slightly alter the other one.  I used your code, although I just realized this morning that I needed to alter the admin one because the link to my site (which was originally the "admin" link) was only "active" if you were logged in as an admin...oops.  So I just changed that link's permissions and voila.

It's a great theme  :)

Guess you will have to redo all the things I made for the header and place your flash.
If you are going to design one flash I am interested in how you will make the flash knows what button to display or make active in regards to the user permission .. but if you are going to make separate flash buttons I guess it will be easier to implement them.

AW CRAP I totally forgot about the permissions! >.<;;;
I guess there is no way to use flash.. >.< but there must be.. since I saw a VB Skin with a flash menu xD.

*Goes to poke around with the VB Template which has the flash menu*

Also: I tried copying the "stats box" code from SMF Default theme to this theme's index.tempalte.php, it looked good but when I tested it (uploaded) nothing was different, no error or stats box.

open 'index.template.php' and look for:
echo '
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<a href="#" onclick="shrinkHeader(!current_header); return false;"><img id="upshrink" src="', $settings['images_url'], '/', empty($options['collapse_header']) ? 'upshrink.gif' : 'upshrink2.gif', '" alt="*" title="', $txt['upshrink_description'], '" style="margin: 2px 0;" border="0" /></a><img id="upshrinkTemp" src="', $settings['images_url'], '/blank.gif" alt="" style="margin-right: 2ex;" />';

replace it with
echo '
<div class="headertitles" style="width: 260px;"><img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/blank.gif" height="12" alt="" /></div>
<div class="headerbodies" style="width: 260px; position: relative; background-image: url(', $settings['images_url'], '/box_bg.gif);">
<img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/' , $context['user']['language'] , '/keystats.gif" style="position: absolute; left: -1px; top: -16px;" alt="" />
<div style="height: 35px; padding: 5px;" class="smalltext">
<b>', $modSettings['totalMessages'], '</b> ', $txt[95], ' ', $txt['smf88'], ' <b>', $modSettings['totalTopics'], '</b> ', $txt[64], ' ', $txt[525], ' <b>', $modSettings['memberCount'], '</b> ',  $txt[19], '<br />
', $txt[656], ': <b> <a href="', $scripturl , '?action=profile;u=' , $modSettings['latestMember'] , '">' , $modSettings['latestRealName'] , '</a></b>
</div>
</div>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
<a href="#" onclick="shrinkHeader(!current_header); return false;"><img id="upshrink" src="', $settings['images_url'], '/', empty($options['collapse_header']) ? 'upshrink.gif' : 'upshrink2.gif', '" alt="*" title="', $txt['upshrink_description'], '" style="margin: 2px 0;" border="0" /></a><img id="upshrinkTemp" src="', $settings['images_url'], '/blank.gif" alt="" style="margin-right: 2ex;" />';

Post by: † ÐëepÇuT¹ † on August 16, 2004, 06:32:21 PM
Thanks  :).. also any thoughts about the flash menu?

Heres what I'm thinking\\

Original:
// If the user is a guest, show [login] and [register] buttons.
if ($context['user']['is_guest'])
{
echo '
<area coords="84, 94, 10" shape="circle"  href="', $scripturl, '?action=login" >
<area  coords="122, 91, 9" shape="circle" href="', $scripturl, '?action=register">
';
}

Flash:
// If the user is a guest, show [login] and [register] buttons.
if ($context['user']['is_guest'])
{
echo ' [flash file display code]

';
}

(^ "flash file display code" is where the coding will be to show up the "Login" or "Register" part of the flash menu) OR if this theme had used the menu with normal buttons, I could just change the area with the .gif extension and make it show up flash buttons.. or something *-*.

Could this be done? I haven't actually finished my flash menu or made it in parts or anything so I can't test it :(.
Title: Re: [Theme] xtSMF (SMF 1.0 RC1)
Post by: A.M.A on August 16, 2004, 06:54:41 PM
Yes that could be done .. but by that method you are going to design a flash for every button .. which I guess will just add more codes while you could accomplish this by designing some animated gifs ..

There is also an overlap method that can be used by flash .. it is idea is placing one flash above the other .. so you can design a container and let it overlap with the buttons .. not sure if it is compatible with all browsers .. being while since I tried that method.

Now you will have to implement the action of the buttons in the flash itself .. that's ok except for the 'logout' button which uses a link with your session ID if I'm not mistaken, and you must figure a way of getting that unless it is not important.

I see.. sounds complicated. I'll try the making the menu a GIF like you said but make it animate only once then stop, so it'll look close to something like a flash... ok the only thing that'll be left to do is change the "area coords" around.

Not cross-browser compatible. Opera doesn't recognize it as being transparent.

I've already got the Spaceman and Longhorn themes installed in addition to the two that come with the board. Keep up the good work! :)

Oops! Thought 5 was the newest as I saw a friend's site. The images it points to are not anywhere to be found in the download. smflogo.gif is one example - it is nowhere in the zipped file I downloaded. I uploaded the thing twice but no dice. My page is hosted in Germany for some dumb reason and it doesnt want to work. I'll keep trying to get a US-based host, but it keeps giving me the same german one over and over.
Edit: Another site using the theme with the same problems and its RC1:http://forum.wanettechs.info

Edit: Starting from scratch, heres what I did:
--Install theme .../themes/xtSMF1-1 for directory
--Chose the theme from menu or choose... btn
--Some pics work (ex: news) but others point to nonexistant files

Im getting RC1 on there right now.
Edit2: Which didnt make a difference. Some still work, others no

try using the exact location and folder of the theme not a redirect .. and see if it works.. something like: http://www.wanettechs.info/forum/

forum.net-techs.info

working now only because I took the template.index data and shoved in the index template on the site. Why did it not do this automatically? Of course it is a different layout than the other themes I have used, but I though it should load automatically.

Edit: My bad totally. Turns out that I had a file (index.php) in there for some stupid reason. It was using that which I bet is the default layout. When I removed and reinstalled it w/o the index.php there it works flawlessly.

Thanks a bunch for this theme (looks a lot better with the tree) and the time trying to diagnose what was going on. As a shortcut, I had removed the entire forum contents except for the Themes folder and reinstalled. All the while, index.php had been in there.

It'd be great with better icons for stickies, I think the dfault is a little lame, a pin would look great. I think this is the best theme I've seen so far! thank you!

Is there a way to put the title up in the main bar?

I replaced the Logo picture, and may change the image map (if I can remember how to do that stuff).

But I would love to either put a simple graphic between the two with a site name or logo, or just set a header and font of my choice.

I can replace xtHEAD I suppose, but how do I get it to not tile?

No rush on this, its just a little forum for my girlfriend and I.

Just add an extra table cell to that row between the existing ones and you can put whatever content there you want.   Does that help?

It helps... ish...

I haven't toyed with PHP in about 2 years, but I'll figure it out.

Now if I can just host my little forum somewhere without fear of losing my database then I will be okay.

check out index.template.

Search for
Quote
// Show the menu here, according to the menu sub template.
      template_menu();

   echo '</td>
        <td width="20%" align="center" background="', $settings['images_url'], '/xtHEAD.gif"></td>
        <td width="80%" align="right" background="', $settings['images_url'], '/xtHEAD.gif"><img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/xtLOGO.gif"></td>
      </tr>
      <tr>
        <td width="100%" colspan="3">

Then where you see
Quote
        <td width="20%" align="center" background="', $settings['images_url'], '/xtHEAD.gif"></td>
        <td width="80%" align="right" background="', $settings['images_url'], '/xtHEAD.gif"><img src="', $settings['images_url'], '/xtLOGO.gif"></td>

you can add in another set of td's in between the existing ones to create a middle cell.  Make sure you adjust the percentages specified in the other two existing td's.

As for the hosting, browse the "hosts and hosting" board for some suggestions.

Good luck,
Jason

PERFECT!!!!

Thanks!

I am actualy hosting it from my own server. I can't risk losing the info so I want the database local so that I can back it up anytime I want. I was able to make the XP firewall take a chill pill so now my lovely and wonderfull girlfriend can access it at home and yet i am still a little more secure (not too worried, if anybody wants to hack that machine they wont find much fun there).

I'll post a link when I get it a bit more swanky.

In the interum, I believe I found the code for the image map, so if I keep it exactly how it is now, only change the graphic a bit so that it fits in a tad more will that break anything? It seems like the links are done through the PHP so can I just edit the image how I need it while keeping all the locations the same and it work properly?

Also I saw someone up the line here was wanting to use a flash menu. I came accross a cool little book that gives great ways to tie Flash and PHP together with MYSQL. I don't remember the name of the book but I if memory serves you should be able to tie in a flash menu using the existing PHP menu code, but it may not be worth the effort. If it were me i would create a flash menu that calls to the PHP and uses its checks for the button functionality. Not absolutely certain how to impliment it but I know it can in fact be done and should be compatible with all browsers that have Flash.

Just a thought.  8)

You need to modify index.template.php .. mainly delete the header's columns and put back the original template menu.

Excellent work.  :)

I've just installed it and funnily in the index board it does not use the translated words for (Board) Name , Posts and Latest. Everywere else in the board it is using, correctly, the language files for the language chosen (which is not English). Why is it not so in the index?

As for the menu, is there any chance to create an alternative which uses buttons but also allows you to put the board logo above (just like in the xtSMF standard) but instead on the left side replacing the standard xtSMF navigation menu? Thanks.

Sorry those strings were hard coded. To change them
in Boardindex.template.php look for:
Quote
<td class="catbg1', $category['new'] ? '2' : '', '">Name</td>
<td align="center" class="catbg1', $category['new'] ? '2' : '', '">Posts</td>
<td class="catbg1', $category['new'] ? '2' : '', '">Latest</td>

am afraid replacing the menu with buttons will make the design not good. You may use the right side or simply way at the top.

Thanks, I will do those changes. :)

As for the template, what we had in mind is more or less this:

[Image removed]

I'm not all too sure about the menu where it is placed, but... the thing is, I'm not very used to messing with templates. Any hints you could offer to do changes like that, would be welcome. :)

// Because of the way width/padding are calculated, we have to tell Internet Explorer 4 and 5 that the content should be 100% wide. (or else it will assume about 108%!)
echo '

add after:
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
  <tr>
    <td width="100%" align="left"><img src="http://www.mycom.com/mylogo.gif" alt="" /></td>

It is usually done by surrounding your contents with a table .. something like this:
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%">
  <tr>
    <td>top-left</td>
    <td width="100%">top-middle</td>
    <td>top-right</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td>middle-left</td>
    <td width="100%">  Board in here   </td>
    <td>middle-right</td>
  </tr>
  <tr>
    <td>bottom-left</td>
    <td width="100%">bottom-middle</td>
    <td>bottom-right</td>
  </tr>
</table>
