Title: AD's From Google
Post by: LGLDSR on April 11, 2007, 09:26:38 PM
Suddenly - and I have NO clue as to why - I am having "Ads from Google" appearing on my Forum. Is anyone else experiencing this? I detest these things!  I have NOT put these on my Site nor do I have any 'Ad' Mods.

Who is your host?

Can you provide a test login -- your forum seems to be by registration only

Thanks

The Host is Hostgator...and given the amount of years I've been with them I would not suspect they would do this.

Give me two minutes and I will create that login.

THANK YOU!

I looked at your forum and I cannot see any ads?

I know; as crazy as it sounds they come and go. And when there is no Ad to display, you get the generic Public Service Ad that Google provides!

Honest!

i'll see if i can get this to happen, i have not been able to

I would like to note that SMF in NO WAY contains any sort of advertisement... the only thing that is required is the copyright at the bottom and that is intact.   So this is very odd, i'll let you know if i see anything

where are these ads appearing?

They're showing at random in various Boards - including the Admin board which only I have access to...or so I thought? I will grab a screenshot next time.

My Host is looking into this as well.

Thanks very much, and any further insight would indeed be greatly appreciated.

Best,

Lyman

are you 100% positive this isn't your browser doing this... I'm not seeing ads anywhere at all :(

On a side note -- My grandfather would have loved your website if he were still alive.   He was an engineer with CSX for a long time.  *sigh* i miss him :(

Thanks again.

Positive it's not the Browser doing this.

An Engineer for CSX? That is a job I would have loved to have had myself. Did you check out the image on  Class One Railroads (http://classonerailroads.com/)? How ironic is that?

I know what you mean...I was thinking about my Grandmother the other day. She passed away at 89, in 1992. A very, very Wise Woman. Sigh...

i'm having no luck whatsoever getting this to happen... if it happens again, do two things - - don't leave the page.

take a screenshot.

Then

View the source code, copy and paste it in this topic between
and
tags for formatting, and paste it here, and i can take a look at it and see where the code was inserted from/at.

Until then, i've been trying for a half hour to get this to happen and thusfar have been completely unsuccessful.

Pretty ironic.  My grandfather worked circles around people even after he retired from CSX-- he helped do construction jobs and outperformed even the 20-25 year olds in the field.  He was and still is the greatest man i ever knew.

Like i said though -- if it happens again, grab a screen and the page's source and i'll take alook, just send me a pm or post here -- now that i've posted here the forum will notify me of new posts made in this thread

Its from Spelling Cow they add ads to your site their mod does.

I can't believe they do that since Google does not allow that.

You see it if you post a reply or new topic.

I see now...  I was just viewing the board index and message and post indexes

vbgamer45: is it a removable part of the code?

why hasn't someone reported them to google?

I would advise, then, removing spelling cow.

IT'S WHO? Is that the Spell Checker as listed in my installed packages? I installed that a month ago and just saw it now...that I don't understand.

Why hasn't SMF done something about this!

I will bring this to Google's attention.

I am furious.

Thanks -

Lyman

do you have a mod called spelling cow or similar installed?  check admin => packages

SMF can't do anything about this -- they cant really control third party packages, as they don't write them, however this doesn't appear to be a hack posted on mods.simplemachines.org was this downloaded elsewhere?  If you dont have this mod installed, then heres what you do...

Download the install package, find the file in Themes/default/ called Post.template.php, and upload that file to your forum directory with FTP

any other info, vb?

Edit: http://www.spellingcow.com/

Evidently the ad is part of their license agreement after 30 days.
