Title: Auto merge double posts
Post by: Tony Reid on September 15, 2004, 09:11:08 AM
When a user posts directly under his own post it would be nice if its automatically merged with his post directly above.

This would save moderators from merging threads of double posters :)

There are times when two posts could be merged and most of the time they shouldn't. There's not just the number or posts to consider, there's also the fact that if the other posters in the topic already read the first reply of the two, when he makes the second, if it's not as a separate one, it won't be easily noticed.

While I think you now get a 'new' button when that happens, there's also the time factor to consider. So I might have added my second post an hour later to make a second distinct point and prefer the posting times to stress that (ie not just a 'last edit' time to the first), in which case I certainly wouldn't be pleased to see them merged...

It was just a thought :)

I could accept to have a tool for moderators to merge consecutive posts by the same author in the same topic. I'd use the checkboxes like with Delete Seleted. Would probably name it Merge Selected. It could add a little time stamp where one ends and the next starts in the resulting edit. I'm still not sure how useful a tool like this would be though.

These are three posts to be merged:

Yeah I like that idea.

I often have to merge double posts - so an option like that would be quite handy :)

That would be nice.  Even better if it merged attachments also.  I have people who like to make 10 posts with one attachment on each one, and I have to save all the files to my hard drive, then re-attach them to one message.

That is way too much work for me.

I would just make a post in their thread explaining how to do it and ask them to edit their posts.  If they don't, I'd ignore it unless it happened again... then I'd get mean and threaten to delete posts and attachments if they don't abide by the Admin's requests... and post a link to the first time I had told them.

I know how you feel, but that doesn't always really work, and you still need to clean up those topics, specially if you want to keep that content.

Well, that's why I have Global Mods ;)

Put them to work :P

Automatically merging identical double-posts would be a good feature though - you know, when someone hits Post twice by accident and two posts crop up. In this case, it could even simply delete the second post.

Have you tried to accidently hit the post button twice in SMF yet? :)

There certainly is a desperate need for this functionality!
