Title: vMessageIcon Filters
Post by: Valodim on August 30, 2007, 05:21:11 AM
Link to Mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=923)

This mod adds a filter by message icons to specific boards. Just look at the screenshots, it's really quite simple.

feature list:
- the filter dialogue may be collapsed
- multiple filters can be selected at once by holding down SHIFT while clicking
- stickies are always shown
- option to allow use of board-specific message icons in the first post of a thread only, and fall back to default ones (ie, those for all boards) for replies

known issues:
- the page number is not adjusted for filtered results. very minor, probably not worth fixing.
- default theme only :P

All relevant settings are in the Settings tab of "Smileys and Message Icons" in the admin menu.

This is a great alternative if you have seperate but similar content, but not enough overall to warrant several subforums.

it's implemented on my forums:
http://mugenguild.com/forumx/index.php?board=310.0

which is where the screenshots are from, too.

I know you say "defaul theme only", but it shouldn't be too difficult to adapt it to a custom theme...

... I'll check on it and give it a try.

of course you can mod it into a custom theme. it's not that difficult either. just need to do it, which I didn't :P

Actuallym Valodim, I'm having some trouble installing it even on default theme.

I'm using SMF 1.1.2 and the "filter-window" doesn't appear,  even with the correct board ID. Does it need some other option enabled to work, like custom message icons or it just works specifically with custom message icons?

yes the ones used in the filter are the custom message icons for that board. thought that was obvious... isn't it? might need to add that to the readme then :P

Oh ok... now it works, even on custom theme... one just have to follow what's in the xml (and to adapt certain stuff that remains only your own custom theme ;))

Thanks, it's great!

How do you install it on a CUSTOM theme?
Title: Re: vMessageIcon Filters
Post by: Valodim on September 03, 2007, 06:19:54 AM
there is no generic way - if there was, it would be done automatically.

look at the install.xml and apply the changes to the template files to your template files where appropiate.

Hi. Wanted to know in which folder should I add the custom images, so that they will be available as message icons

for default theme
Themes/default/images/post
and you have to add them to the specific board in the Smileys & Message Icons admin tab.

Valodim,

I just want to add a little thing: when I install in a custom theme, I have to upload the custom icons to the default "post" directory because it doesn't work if I put them in the custom theme "post" directory (a message appears saying they don't exist).

I just think you should try to see if this happens to you... because it can be a problem of the custom theme itself ;)

Valodim,

Just to leave a small note in case you decide to update this MOD: the pagination needs to be fixed. When applying a filter, the number of pages on the topiclist remain the same, but the last ones get empty and that increases depending on how much "filtering" has been done.

might fix it, but that is always one additional query. hum.

I will upgrade this when I change my forum to 2.0

This works absolutely marvellous for 1.1.9.

I must say I would like this to be available later in SMF 2.0. If you look at my forum, you'll see that it is widely used and with good results... for example, by propagating filters links in forum's homepage, users can choose directly the filter they want without having to click through the section.

Yeah, i hope this mod will be updated for 2.0 rc 2 and rc3. It's not easy to edit this mod to make it work for rc2, i tried.

Interesting concept, would be good to see a smf 2.0 version.

This is one simple yet beautiful & very useful mod, if only the creator make a premium version and sell it $5-10 for this mod (imagine 10000 download = $50.000-$100.000 for himself)i bet he'll be more enthusiastic in always updating this mod. I dont mind paying for nice mod like this.

Honestly, I doubt he would be; so many people here complain when a mod is even $5.

Mind you, he's MIA :(

Who cares if other people are complaining? this mod's great, he shouldve had 2 versions of this mod.. free & paid version if he had a good business sense. What's an MIA btw ?
