Title: Shut Out
Post by: Terry O on October 17, 2007, 06:02:44 PM
I changed internet service providers from a telphone company DSL account to a Fiber Optic broadband accountand ever since then, the program shuts me out. The error message I'm getting is:

Database Error: Lost connection to MySQL server during query
File: /home/content/t/w/o/twoshadows69/html/KOTCT_FORUM/Sources/Security.php
Line: 272

How do I get back in?

When do you get this meesage?
Does it happen when you try to go to your site?
And you changing isp shouldn't have anything to do with your forum though. Unless you host the forum yourself.

Anyway, just a guess, but you can try repair_Settings: What is repair_settings.php? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=663)

It is hosted on a MYSQL server at Godaddy. I can go to any other website except for this one. Ican go to the homepage and see it just fine. If I click the link to go to the forum...The error in the first message.

I was just told by the folks at GoDaddy that it had to be a block from theither the program or my computer and if I knew what file to look for on my machine that the SMF is referencing I would either delete it or ask someone here how to fix it.

I thank anyone and everyone in advance for assisting me with this issue.

Can you post a link to your site so we can take a look at it?
Are you the only one with this problem or do other members on y our forum also get it?
Title: Re: Shut Out
Post by: Terry O on October 18, 2007, 04:24:28 PM
It has to be on my computer.  Everyone else can go to the forum and login. It just won't let me in.  The other administrator set me up with a new account and it sent me an email with a link to login using the new login name and password...and It still gives me the same message that it did before.  I'm thinking that their is a file on my machine somewhere that it is referencing and it is either damaged or some of the info it's looking at is not coinciding with the program itself.

Does anyone have an explanation why this is doing this or a solution? It seems as though I'm the only one who can'tget into this forum. I'm sure that it is a simple fix for the person that wrote the program , if they were available.

Have you tried using a different internet browser?

Is this happening no matter when you try it (day, evening, night)?

Probably a long shot, but try clearing your internet temp files and cookies.

I am just making a guess but since it is GoDaddy, It is possible your MySQL servers are timing out again and again.

I was also kind of leaning towards GoDaddy as well. If you still have those errors now, try contacting them to see if it's a MySQL issue on their end.

I've seen a few people on GoDaddy's hosting report this problem. After so much time of others with them not having this problem, I'm thinking that GD did some kind of work on their servers and caused this to start happening.

I'm not using Godaddy.  :o
I' m just useing that theme to tell you about my problem , so it wouldn't be necessery to post it again in future. And thats what I'm asking for

The problem is not from the hosting provider.

There are a lot of such cases. I would understand if we were the only ones, but as you see there are a lot of written themes and posts here and in some other forums on that problem.

Don_NUTSO, there is also a known bug in MySQL that can cause the "server has gone away" error. If your MySQL server is 5.0.22 or older, then it has the bug. 5.0.27 and newer are known to work good. I don't believe the bug affected the 4.1 or 4.0 versions, so they are fine as well.

It has been my experience that the majority of this issue is caused by the MySQL bug as a lot of hosts seem to be running 5.0.18.

this is not from bug in MySQL, because non of websites on server have that problem ... when I made upgrade to 1.1.4 the problems begun ...
Where in the SQL, bans from this "forum selfprotection" are saved? how to be cleared?

rows 272, 273, 274 security.php

         AND (" . implode(' OR ', $ban_query) . ')', __FILE__, __LINE__);
// Store every type of ban that applies to you in your session.
         while ($row = mysql_fetch_assoc($request))

rows 2003, 2004, 2005 in load.php
      SET data = '" . addslashes($data) . "', last_update = " . time() . "
      WHERE session_id = '" . addslashes($session_id) . "'

I have the same problem:
.../Sources/Security.php
Line: 272 error
and
...Sources/Load.php
line: 2005

I one of the (2) administrators. And I am a dum newbie in this domain.
My fellow administrator has some problems and can't help me these days, so that's why I'm asking for help here. :)
I tried to access the forum with IE and Opera, and it does not work. (But I can acess the cPanel.)
I also tried to acess the forum using a diferent OS, from a Live CD (fedora) and it works fine.
It works ok also when I acess the forum from my work.
The IP I get using the fedora OS is different from the usual IP that I have within windows, (the one from work it's of course also different) so maybe the MySQL blocks my IP. But why I do not now.
I scanned my computer with 3 different virus scanners (2 online scanners) and it looks clean.
I also deactivated, during trials, the firewall... so that's not  causing this eiher.
Help please.

To all that posted about it: try deleting your cookies and cache (temporary Internet files) from your browser. You have problems logging in from one computer, so the problem is on that computer, not the site.
Title: Re: Shut Out
Post by: Geri Lx on January 05, 2008, 11:44:17 AM
I tried that last night, and I tried it now again.
I deleted all temporary files on the computer, by searching for the teporary folders, including opera and IE,
...and by serching using the run/%temp%/ok command.
I deleted all files using the IE preferences menu and Opera also.
I dleted all cookies from IE and Opera. Veryfied it...all clean.
I iven deleted the bookmark shortcuts to my forum.

I searched for the forum using google so it could not use a shortcut and coockie from the browser (I left none).  And i tried to acess it...the result is the same. No access. Same errors. :(

I looked in the cPanel in the error logs...no errors with my IP.
I did a ping tot the site and the server responded ok. Ping successful.
I did a tracert and it get to the server.
...Don't now what else to try. :(

Try contacting your ISP, maybe they can help with it.

Can you post your forum URL here?

The problem is for the IP, the forum blocks some IPs but nobody can say why... the only solution to accede to the forum is that the blocked user tries to change his IP...

Look at Admin > Ban List. Another possibility is that the IP is blocked by a firewall at the server or host network level, not at the forum level.
Title: Re: Shut Out

I'm writing you this again - it's not from the ISP, it's not from the cookies or temp files, and in the ban list there are not described this IPs.
A friend of mine helped me: he has edited security.php, and when I or some of my users have this "ban problem" i'm putting the edited security.php (I'm not shure but I think then the ban which you have are not active) and when the problem has gone I put the original security.php. It is primitive decision but it works, and I'm pleased and also my users.

Can you attach the edited Security.php? It can help us pinpoint the problem more accurately, perhaps even offer a better fix. Thank you!

Title: Re: Shut Out
Post by: Tony Reid on January 16, 2008, 04:19:29 AM
All that I can see is that he has removed(by comment) Lines 213 - 431

The bit that deals with this....
// Only check the ban every so often. (to reduce load.)

Which could be detrimental on server load.

Title: Re: Shut Out
Post by: Sarge on January 16, 2008, 06:31:43 AM
Actually, the whole code of the function is_not_banned() is commented out, except for this:

return;

which makes the function return true (the user is not banned), no matter what. So that change will allow all banned members to visit, log on, post etc. on your forum. I'm starting to think that the problem lies with the SMF and/or PHP configuration.

Verify that these settings in SMF Admin > Server Settings > Feature Configuration tab are set as below:

Enable local storage of cookies - unchecked (not ticked)
Use subdomain independent cookies - checked (ticked)
Use database driven sessions - checked (ticked)

Also post the link to your phpinfo.php
What is a phpinfo() file? (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=479)

here is the info http://forum.stih4e.com/phpinfo__.php

about this:
Enable local storage of cookies - unchecked (not ticked)
Use subdomain independent cookies - checked (ticked)
Use database driven sessions - checked (ticked)

it was the same ...

I want to ask about search engine, sometimes when i click to search something, the whole forum loading very slow, and sometimes shows blank page. My DB is very big, more than 250 MB is the SQL file, is the problem from this?

Sorry for my bad english.
Title: Re: Shut Out
Post by: Sarge on January 16, 2008, 08:57:46 AM
Another possible cause I can think of is that those users have firewalls installed on their computers that won't allow your forum to set its cookies.
Title: Re: Shut Out
Post by: Don_NUTSO on January 16, 2008, 09:21:11 AM
I was banned before a few weeks from my forum (i made a mistake to log out) :) I have not installed firewalls. This is a big mistery :)

I am having this exact problem with http://forum.x-tremeoffroaders.com

Host is godaddy, forum is lightly traveled. SMF is 1.1.4, no mods.

85% of users never have a problem, 15% of users can never get online, ever. Problem is 100% consistent across small subset of users. For these reasons, I do not expect it is godaddy mysql load.

smf_ban_groups and smf_ban_items on my DB are both empty.

I have 2 IP providers at my home. Connected to 1 MySQL times out with the security.php error. Connected to another the forum works fine. Now, while I still somewhat suspect the ISP to be involved, I have had several (3) techs from various call centers swear up and down that they are not traffic shaping in any way. Other usage (p2p, specifically) appears to back up these claims. Also, I personally know other users on this ISP in this geographic area (in other words, on the same ISP CO gear and thereby theoretically subjected to the same presumed traffic shaping) who can get to SMF no problems.

I have ... some considerable experience debugging software and I am at a bit of a loss here. I am tempted to do as Don has done and comment out the ban list entirely, though this is obviously a non-optimal solution.

Thoughts?
- Greg

edit: grammar.

But for more users it can be anoying.  Hopefuly there are no users of my forum (other than me :)) affected.

I will keep my eye to this topic...in case if it happends again. :)

Wow this support thread is a mess, what is there 3-4 different people asking questions having issues.  This is why it's best to create a single thread per person per issue so it can be followed cleanly.

Now could the IP issue be with newly released IP ranges and/or IPv4/Ipv6 addresses?

It is getting bad.....locking this topic as of this post.

Try asking your host to see if they can look into it. Check the IP Deny Manager (for those using cPanel) and even your .htaccess file to see if that IP range is banned.

Everyone who's having problems still, please create your OWN topic requesting for help.
