I would like to add a stumble button at the bottom of each post without using a module.

it would appear in the write with the article title and url.

i have this same question, anyone know the answer to this? currently there's buttons on stumbleupon website that i can use but it doesn't take SMF forums titles and url.

There are mods already out there for adding such buttons, though invariably they add to the top of the thread only rather than to an individual post (since there's no differentiating URL per post, except using # which is usually ignored anyway)
