Petition to rename SMF to CSF (Constipated Smilies Forum) begins here. ;)

I, anyway, think the smilies are a bit too...meaningless...the emotions they're meant to express don't come out, by not one of them, but hey, I can replace them with my own smilies anyway when I've got my own SMF 1.0, so... ;)
Only of this one I think it's pretty clear:  ???

I'm was looking around and I saw a few more than there are here. (http://www2.konfabulator.com/forums/images/smiles/Halo.gif) (http://www2.konfabulator.com/forums/images/smiles/Evil.gif)

I also saw a very disturbing quote.

QuoteI use a PC with Windows, and I've wanted a Mac for a few months. Now I've found this app I want one even more

Nope, they are the default smilies from Apple iChat, hence the reason why they were on a Mac-related forum.

they came from iChat; however, I did pull them from the original TIFF files and modify them to work on this board a bit better.  We also added a few others that were not in iChat.

Had I known someone had already done all that work, I would have just used those!

What's disturbing about that quote?  Mac OS X is nothing short of amazing!

Actually, I should shut up since this is not the proper place for a Macintosh debate.

Same, while I prefer the style of the iChat ones I think it will be a lot safer to go with Joseph's ones, mainly because you wont have a huge company after you for stealing their smilies and the smilies uniquely identify itself as SMF (also means you could legally package them). Secondly because they are a lot clearer so are instantly recognisable meaning that it takes less thought processing time which means less strain when reading for a long time. Plus they are better for small, high-res screens and users with visual disabilities.

I think.. it... might've been Andrea.

Anyway, we'll just include it as a set and people can choose.

But, if this set is copyrighted... we should take it off...

That's a good point - or get permission from the people who own the copyright.

Joseph did you ever do a png version of those smilies?
Title: Re:Big smile smilie
Post by: Joseph on August 06, 2003, 03:50:27 PM
Yes I did - but to be frank guys, I like the current smilies better than the ones I did.  The ones I did are really too close to the phpBB smilies...
Title: Re:Big smile smilie
Post by: Joel on August 06, 2003, 04:15:38 PM
I don't think those look anything like the phpBB smilies (unless they have a new version I haven't seen). They look closest to IPB's smilies to me.

It might be a bad idea to use iChat's smilies though. Apple has been known to go after people that infringe on their copyrights (Aqua themes in XP, Y'z Dock, etc.). Maybe you can get permission from Apple... :-\
Title: Re:Big smile smilie
Post by: Joseph on August 06, 2003, 04:16:57 PM
as it was explained to me

QuoteSimply put, the images have no copyright and were not built by Apple (although the iChat icons are a little different that what you see posted, He didn't actually use those graphics directly, he used the original files).  The icons were created for AIM and have been available on MacUpdate since Mac OS 9.

The background was modified, and he changed the border, and the foreground on most images.  More than 90% of all smilies have been changed.

cool?

ikonBoard's:
