heres a silly question, but how did SMF get the smf logo to show in the address bar?

Thats a favicon. You can pretty much find out by searching Google.

you just upload it to your files
to make one, go to favicon.cc

What I did was I just created a favicon.ico and imported it to my SMF root. I did it in ico format so IE can recognize it. :) There are also a few mods out there for favicons. ;)
