Title: Vista Gadget
Post by: genieuk on October 14, 2008, 11:47:39 AM
Hi,

I am not sure if this could be done but i was thinking, what about if one of you mod creators out there create a desktop widget app for Vista sidebar / google sidebar and we buy it for example £10 which we could then personalise it for our own forums.

So we pay £10 or something like that and in return we get a fab app for members of our forum to download and use on there sidebar.

Anyone think this could be possible? and anyone wanting to give it a go? . I did look on Google but to create one seems a night mare and i have no knowledge of coding to make one. Something to show for example last ten posts posted on forum.

unless there is software out there that can do this

Sound like a good idea, I had one for a Vista forum I belonged to and it worked great

You could just add the RSS feed that SMF provides to the Vista sidebar.

That site is very hard to navigate half english half another language, i did try it but not what i was wanting. It is a widget and cannot be installed on a computer sidebar like in Vista.

RSS support is already built-in.

How to add an RSS feed to the Windows Vista Sidebar (http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/02/06/how-to-add-an-rss-feed-to-the-windows-vista-sidebar/)

I think what we are trying to get here is a mod that will place button on your forum that the members can click on and it will install the Widget onto the desktop Vista PC

This is what i would like,

A Vista sidebar gadget that shows the 10 most recent posts for example. Like these i mean: http://vista.gallery.microsoft.com/vista/SideBar.aspx?mkt=en-gb

That way we upload the .exe file to server and people can download and install the gadget on there computers and keep and eye on the 10 most recent posts.

Sorry it my fault as i put widget and i meant gadget, my fault and sorry for confusing people. I only just realised and changed title.

Excellent!  :D now people understand anyone willing to do this? it could be alot of dosh involved if you charge £10 per person which in $ it work out about $18 per gadget. It bount to be easy when you write the code as it means just chaning minor details then to relfect peoples forums.

This has already been answered. It's not hard to add news feeds (RSS) to the already existing news sidebar gadget.

I mean what you are asking for is some to write a sidebar RSS reader that has your forums latest posts RSS url hard coded in already? It's about 5 minutes work for any Sidebar gadget writer is my guess but personally I think email notification and any existing feed reader work just fine.

That is what i am asking yes, reason why is that it can be personalized with something like our theme etc like the vists forums ones.

I think this would be a great mod to have. I have one for the Vista forum that I am a member of and I just keep tabs from my desktop

Okay I was searching for the same thing and saw  this post.
Just registered and came back to post my little work-around solution.

First of all you need this program: http://www.amnestywidgets.com/GeneratorWin.html

Then go to: http://www.widgetbox.com
(or use any other listed site in the program)

And create your own blidget or widget or what they call it.
Use the generated code in the downloaded program and make a gadget.

Go and find your gadget on your pc (after installation of the gadget)
Gadgets are usually in:
C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets

Sometimes in:
C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Shared Gadgets
&
C:\Users\*USERNAME*\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets

Then put all the files in a .zip
So you have for example:   MySuperCoolForumSidebar.zip
Rename that file to:   MySuperCoolForumSidebar.gadget

And presto all is done!

Here is one I just made http://rapidshare.com/files/173132880/Ogrishgadget.gadget.html
(I do note the used forum has some not nice content, but heay it's just proof off concept  ;) )
Well here is a child proof one: http://rapidshare.com/files/173133355/Borstvoedeninfo.gadget.html

I think the first poster at least owes me a beer!  ;D  :P

PS: I use SMF for years now and always (well most always) found my answer here, just wanted to give some back.
Good first post in my opinion.... Not an answer but a solution.  O:)

If all above is jibberish to you and you still want one like in my last two links?
Send me a pm and I'll make one for you, it will cost you a six-pack beer though.  :P
