As google analytics searches for a code which should be present all over the forum, use the Global Headers and Footers Mod, put the code in the header or footer, and it is all done.

Thanks for the mod link!  Worked like a charm for me.  I had tried the index.template.php before or after the php code and it killed captcha and this solved everything.

Thanks again!

Hi

There are so many posts asking this question that I wrote a blog post specially for it.

Actually, it inspired the blog itself.

The code is provided and the solution is discussed here:
Simple Machines Forum Software and Google Analytics (http://analytixspecifix.blogspot.com/2008/12/simple-machines-forum-software-and_08.html)

Please try it and provide feedback thru blog comments.
